Sunday afternoons were different for me last fall than most years because I made a decision that I no longer care about NFL football. It turned out to be quite pleasant, and I would like to continue not to care. One factor will be a challenge to not caring, and that is the move of the Rams back to Los Angeles.

From the Altar Flower Coordinator

Editorial Note: Thank you Barbara Burney for taking on this ministry. Your touch is golden and the care you have given this ministry is a blessing to us all. Now for a note from Barbara:

I wish to express my appreciation to each of you who have graciously given an offertory of Altar Flowers. The task for which I volunteered for has not been a challenge but a JOY. Your graciousness has, does and will be become a conduit of blessing reaching out to those who not only attend services on Sunday but those who could not attend. The flowers delivered after the services were blessed by the prayers, heard the scripture and the music. Thank you for being a part of this beautiful ministry. Barbara Burney Another Editorial note: You can sign up to sponsor altar flowers through the church website, www.emmanuel-sa.org Click on the Worship button and one of the choices that will come up is Sponsor Altar Flowers

It is in the process of being worshipped that God communicates his presence to us.

C e lebr a tin g G od ’s P r e s e nc e As W e S er v e 1st Sunday Loose Offering Each month at Emmanuel, the loose offering on the first Sunday is designated for a charitable purpose beyond our walls. The September recipient of the 1st Sunday Loose Offering will be the U.S. Disaster Relief Fund of Episcopal Relief & Development, in support of efforts to provide flood relief for Louisiana. The “1st Sunday” is to be transferred to the 2nd Sunday this month, since the 1st Sunday is Labor Day weekend, and sometimes folks are out of town on Labor Day Weekend. In anticipation of that possibility, the 1st Sunday Loose Offering for September will be collected on the 2nd Sunday of the month, September 11. The August recipient of the 1st Sunday Loose Offering, which actually was taken up on the 1st Sunday in August, was La Gran Familia which received $307 in support from Emmanuel, thanks to the compassion and generous spirits of those who attended worship on that day.

Emmanuel School of Fine Arts A New Ministry of Service

During the past year or so, the Vision and Direction Committee, composed of several Vestry members, the immediate past two Senior Wardens, and other members -at-large, has been discussing how to be good stewards of the Kreps Trust for Ministry with Youth. In those discussions, there is agreement that among the recognized charisms of our parish is an appreciation of music and fine arts as means for human expression and for extolling the glory of God, and that music and the arts could play a role in our ministry with youth. With a goal in mind to bring such a ministry to Emmanuel, a contingent made up of Fr. Matt, Landon Gilmore, and Angela Ochoa attended a Yale Institute of Sacred Music conference on “How to Start a Parish-Based Music School” this past spring. You can learn more about the Institute from their website, www.ism.yale.edu, and the parish-based music school initiative by clicking on the Outreach navigation button. The conference attendees reported back to the Vision and Direction Committee, which endorsed a parish-based music school as a means to provide a ministry for youth. When Deacon Christian Rabone arrived to serve as Curate in July, Fr. Matt appointed him, along with Landon and Angela, as a steering committee to guide us toward a startup date, which he expected might not be until the 201718 school year. As it turns out, the pieces are falling into place more quickly, and the Emmanuel School

September, 2016

of Fine Arts (ESOFA) is taking shape for this school year. Deacon Christian wrote the following summary of how it is happening. “The program is reaching out to teachers who

teach students in their private studios to now teach their students in the Kreps Education Building. The mission of ESOFA is to provide high quality training in the fine arts to students of all ages, regardless of socio-economic status. The benefits of this program for teachers include having a place to teach their students, administrative support for scheduling and tuition, and being associated with Emmanuel, an institution that has the ability, because of the Kreps Trust, to offer sliding scale tuition to students with demonstrable financial need. ESOFA is taking off more quickly than expected because we already have many people interested in our program. In the next month, we should notice many musical sounds coming from the Kreps Education Building on a consistent basis. Some future goals include highlighting ESOFA on the church website, reaching out to the public schools and college about the opportunities and benefits ESOFA offers to students, teachers, and the community, and enlarging the ESOFA steering committee to guide the program.” To those who have responded favorably to this new ministry with offers to help underwrite tuition for those with need, or to donate gently used instruments in good condition for use by students, we say Thank You, and we want you to know that we will be in touch as things progress. If you would like to know more about ESOFA, please contact the Rev. Christian Rabone by telephone at the church number or by email to [email protected].

C e lebr a tin g G od ’s P r e s e nc e As W e L ov e “Pounding” Party God willing, we will commission the Rev. Christian Rabone as Curate of Emmanuel Parish during the 10:30 celebration of the Holy Eucharist on September 18, marking an official start to the ministry he took up among us over the summer. Following the service, there will be a “Pounding” Party in the Great Room, where we will have opportunity to greet Christian, Tiffany, and Olivia, and wish them well as they embark on this new period in their lives, and to bring a “pound” of something to stock the home pantry. A “Pounding” party is an old Southern way of welcoming a new minister to a parish with gifts of groceries, preserves, nonperishable staples, basically “a pound of something” to help the family set up housekeeping. Since Christian will be here on his own this first year, it would be nice if he received a “pound” (or two) of dinner invitations, which would be a great way for him to get acquainted with us. Watch the Sunday bulletin and eMessenger for hints about what Christian might especially appreciate receiving in pound quantities, and make your plans to join in the fellowship by bringing along a “pound” of good wishes for the Rabone family.

Emmanuel ROCKs! Standing for Reaching Out with Compassion and Kindness, this new ministry is all about Pa-

rishioner care in our church community. The purpose of this ministry is to provide soup for those who are homebound, ill, or just going through seasons of life where a little help with meals might be appreciated. By doing so, we hope to let those not able to attend services know that they are loved and appreciated in our wonderful community here at Emmanuel.

We plan on initially meeting once a month to cook up a batch of soup to deliver to those in need of a warm meal. If you are interested in helping, we are in need of cooks to prepare the soup. Our second cooking affair will be September 8th at 3:30pm (or once the Grace & Grub team is finished) in the Emmanuel kitchen. If you are unable to attend our cooking affairs, but would like to be a part of this new ministry we can still use your help! We're also We Love Bingo! As the busy summer months come to an end and school gets back into full swing, so does Student Ministry here at Emmanuel. Along with regular Youth activities on Wednesdays and Sundays, there are some new student ministries under way which I will discuss in a little bit. I am happy to say that our youth group is growing and even more active than ever. EYC meets twice a week. On Wednesday from 6:45-7:45 pm, our youth enjoy a fun-filled evening of activities, fellowship, and games with a short, but meaningful lesson at the end. On Sunday mornings at 9:30am we will all meet for Sunday School, where we dive deeper into our lesson from Wednesday evening (Sunday school starts September 11th). Starting this coming Sunday (September 4th) EYC will meet from 5:30 to 7:00, during this time we enjoy a nice dinner sponsored by one of our youth parents or parishioners, fellowship together with different activities and games, and then we end the night on a peaceful note with The Order of Compline. During the school year, EYC tends to stay at Emmanuel, but once a month we try to get out of the normal rhythm of things and go off campus for a fun activity. For the month of September, we have a MOVIE and ICE CREAM night planned. Also starting in the month of September is a new youth fundraiser that will begin September 11th. Our plan is to sell EYC breakfast burritos between the 8 and 10:30 services every other Sunday morning. This is to help us fund our big trips like Mission trips and to

September, 2016

sponsor youth for church camp. If you would like to help, sponsor, or know a good breakfast burrito recipe, please feel free to contact me. This is going to be a very exciting semester for both our high school youth and our college students. We are in the process of forming a college aged group that will meet for fellowship, activities, study, and service. They will also become young adult mentors for our youth group to provide assistance at youth group meetings, field trips, and other big events. Our mission is to keep our graduated seniors active in their home church while they start a big new chapter of their lives. In the coming weeks there will be more info out on this exciting new ministry. This semester is going to be very fun and exciting for our Student Ministries. As always we appreciate all the love and support you all give us. Our Student Ministries is truly blessed to have such a supportive parish. None of this would be possible without the love you all show. If you are at all interested in what our Student Ministries is up to, please contact me or stop by my office on the 2nd floor of the administration building. I love visitors. meal ministry for those times in life when having someone bring a meal is an expression of Christian compassion and kindness.

The Vestry met last on August 23, 2016, and the following business took place: 

John Caldwell was appointed as Acting Clerk for August and September, with the planned absence for those two months of the Clerk of the Vestry, JoAnn Rachele. Fr. Matt opened with devotion and prayer, reading from Numbers 11:1-17, telling the Vestry that the story of Moses leading the people of Israel in the wilderness is a good primer in church leadership. The July Minutes were approved. Vestry Minutes may be found on the Lay Leadership page of the church website, www.emmanuel-sa.org, under the About Us navigation button. They are also kept in a notebook in the Administrative Office.

The July Finance Report, with a motion for approval from the Finance Committee, was approved. Finance reports will also be found on the Lay Leadership Page of the church website, or in a notebook in the Administrative Office.

Dn. Christian gave a report on the early development of the Emmanuel School of Fine Arts. Carly Allen gave reports on the development of two new ministries, the “Vintage” senior fellowship, and the “ROCK Group”, Reaching Out With Compassion and Kindness

Fr. Matt distributed previously distributed materials to Vestry members, which included staff organization chart and staff position descriptions, in case Vestry members encounter any questions or concerns about staff matters in the parish.

Jess Stanford, Jr. Warden, led a discussion of specifications needed in order to send out requests for bids on the planned project to enhance acoustics in the church.

CARING FOR THE HOUSE OF THE LORD

Rick Tinsley, Sr. Warden, spoke about the importance showing unity of support for Vestry decisions.

CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT FUND

Fr. Matt gave an update on the planned installation of new audio system in the church. A contract with JF&A Associates of San Antonio for weather sealing of limestone exterior walls was tentatively approved, subject to their acceptance of two amendments: extension of warranty on materials from one to five years, and change of venue should any legal dispute arise, from Bexar to Tom Green County. JF&A accepted amendments, so the project is under contract.

Sincere appreciation to those who have responded to the Capital Improvement Fund initiative. To date there have been gifts received of $25,250 and pledges received of an additional $17,000.
