General Walton H. Walker Chapter 215

THE BULLDOG BUGLE

IN MEMORY OF HONORED CHAPTER MEMBER, COLONEL JAMES L STONE, MEDAL OF HONOR, DECD. PRESIDENT’S NOTES MARCH 2016

HOME CHAPTER OF KWVA NAT’L PRESIDENT EMERITUS: BILL MAC SWAIN

Our February meeting was well attended and the presentation by member Art Loughry was timely and well received. The threats to our freedom are ever present and require our never ending vigilance. Art’s gracious donation of 40 copies of his book, CURRENT NATIONAL Buckskin Scots, and a percentage of future sales provide needed funding for our KWVA PRESIDENT LARRY KINARD Chapter 215 program initiatives. Also, Art has posted a link to Chapter 215 on his website. Take the time to visit his website at http://marineauthor.com. Also, personally thank him for CURRENT CHAPTER his continuing service to the cause of freedom at our next meeting. 215 PRESIDENT A.J. KEY It was good to see Sam Bass, Jim Wetmore, and Marvin Dunn in attendance after missing recent meetings due to illness. And attendance by Art Loughry’s wife, Liz, and new PAST PRESIDENTS: member prospect Air Force Korean War era service member Fuhrman Biggs. If every DICK PREDMORE MARVIN DUNN member commits to inviting one person or more a month, we can build our membership. MIKE DOYLE Get ready for a time of fun at the March meeting as we hold our annual fund raising LARRY KINARD auction of books and collectables. Jim Lucas and Jack Cooper are coordinating the event. WM. E. HOYLE AL D’AGOSTINO Bring your checkbook just in case that "must have” item exceeds your cash on hand. JIM WETMORE Chaplain Don Jones is chairman of this year’s Election Nominating Committee. Three Director positions are open in June, and all interested members should contact Don. Service as a chapter officer helps ensure continuity of chapter activities and brings fresh insight and new ideas to the chapter leadership team. In a few short years preserving the KWVA legacy will shift to Korea Defense veterans who have stood the watch for the past 62 years, and continue to do so to this day. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone again at our next meeting on March 19th. Sincerely, A.J. Key (President)

GENERAL WALTON H WALKER CHAPTER 215, INC FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES The Gen. Walton H. Walker Chapter #215 Membership Meeting was held on February 20, 2016 at the Veterans Park Event Center in Grand Prairie, Texas. The Chapter meeting was called to order by President Alves Key with 50 Members and 3 Guests. The Invocation was given by Chaplain Don Jones followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag conducted by James Sharp. Bill Mac Swain read the Chapter Creed followed by a moment of silence. President Key welcomed all our Guests and especially Fuhrmann Diggs who was considering joining the Chapter and Liz Loughry, our speaker’s wife. He also noted that Barbara Arnosky was present. President Key asked for motions to approve the January Membership Minutes and the January Financial Report, both presented in the February Bulldog Bugle. A motion was made by James Sharp to approve the January Membership Minutes. Jack Doshier seconded and the motion carried. David Moore made a motion to approve the January Financial Report and Dottie Harris seconded and the motion carried. President Key then asked Chaplain Don Oberholzer to give the blessing for the luncheon food, and stated that some of the January Bar-B-Que that was left over was also available. He then asked that the Guests, Ladies and those who needed help to go to the head of the line. After lunch President Key introduced Member Col. Art Loughry who was our speaker who gave a short bio on himself and then talked about some of the positions that he had served in and decided to write a book about his ideas he formed about the changes he noted in our government practices that have been going on for years which he believed were not good enough as the world changed. He also noted that he had brought 40 books to present to the chapter to be a money raiser for the chapter and that he was also in the process of writing another book that he proposed to the Executive Council Members that he would donate 10% of the sales to the Chapter also. The Executive Council Members had approved these gifts and after his presentation thanked him for his generous offer. The books were sold after the meeting adjourned at $15 each and three gave $20 and said put the change in the book sales. Fifteen books were sold and are reported in the February Financial Report. His presentation was very interesting and raised some questions. COMMITTEE REPORTS: President Key gave a report on those on our sick list who are Janet Baker, Marvin Dunn, Louis Holmes, Al D’Agostino, Richard Vaughn’s wife, Richard Beard, Jim Wetmore and reported that former member James Craig has died. Quartermaster Jim Lucas presented a Chapter Honor Guard Shirt with Flag and Chapter Patch attached and other Honor Guard equipment to two new Honor Guards, James Sharp and Walter Lynch. OLD BUSINESS: President Key reported that he and others are giving those members who cannot attend meetings the Peace Medals and Certificates that the Korean Government has furnished to those who served in Korea during a time period during the war. President Key then introduced Audit Chairman, James Sharp who reported that he, Nathan Stovall and Joe Roberts had checked out the Financial Records and approved them except the Treasurer did not seem to know what year he gave for the February date the audit was done, so he got the President to authorize a change from February 20, 2015 to February 20, 2016. He also noted that the Treasurer needed to be aware that he did not get an A+. President Key introduced Don Jones as our Chapter Nominating Chairman for election of three Executive Council Members for our election in June. He said the Chairman needed two additional members to serve on his committee and asked for volunteers. Byron White volunteered to serve and Daniel Dawkins then

stated he did not want to be on the Executive Council if no one runs. The Secretary told the committee that they could not be on the committee if they ran for office, so Mr. Dawkins said he would be happy to serve. NEW BUSINESS: Next Membership Meeting on March 19, 2016 and will be our Annual Auction Membership Meeting to raise 50/50 funds for the Hill & Hoyle Fund and General Chapter Fund. Now is the time to find what you want to auction off. Jack Cooper will be Chief Auctioneer and a couple of others will volunteer one being Jim Lucas and the other will be ?????. President Key reminded the Chapter that HR 1475, to modify our Korean War Memorial to have the names of those KIA’s and MIA’s placed on it, will be voted on soon and then the same bill will be offered to the Senate if passed by the House of Representatives. Don Oberholzer was introduced to the Members as the approved Presidents appointment to fill the vacant office of Second Vice President. The Executive Council approved that appointment at their February 15, 2016 meeting. President Key then swore in Second Vice President Don Oberholzer. Jack Doshier won the 1st drawing of the 25/50 drawing of $32 and the Chapter received $65 for its 50/50 amount. The second drawing of 25/50 of $32 was won by Gerald Brown. A donation for $45 was made by the membership for the Hill/Hoyle Fund. The Peace Medals pictures were placed on a table for those who had their pictures taken at the Dallas Presentation. There being no further business President Key asked for a motion to adjourn with a closing Prayer. James Sharp made the motion and Ted Malcolm seconded and Chaplain Don Oberholzer gave the closing prayer. Submitted by, Bill Mac Swain, Secretary

A couple interesting stories from one of our ex-presidents - Al D’Agostino Al was reminiscing on meeting some “famous” people during his early years working for TWA as their Director of Food Service. The first time this happened was around 1963. He and Barbara were returning from Italy with their newly adopted son, one year old “Tommy” in tow. Since Al was high up on the food chain he would always sit in First Class so he could keep an eye on how his department was handled. Then there was Barbara sitting back in Coach with Tommy in her lap. The flight had to stop in Madrid and pick up passengers. The Flight Attendant stopped by and set down a bottle of champagne next to Al and told him that he would be having a very famous actress sitting next to him – Ava Gardner. Yep – she would have been around 40 years old since she was born 12/24/1922 and this is exactly what she looked like at that time. After she sat down they opened the champagne and she turned to Al and said, “You are going to have a glass with me” which of course made Al grin from ear-to-ear. Later that evening Al proceeded to walk back to Coach where Barbara was sitting, he told her who he was sitting next to, and then he carried Tommy back up to First Class with him. Ava looked at Tommy and said she wanted to hold him -- so Tommy flew home on the lap of a famous person. The next time was in the early 70’s and Al was sitting in First Class (of course) flying from Los Angeles to New York on the Red-Eye (the overnight flight from LA to NY). They seated a nice looking man next to Al but since it was very late, they were both tired, so conversation was out of the question. Al asked the flight attendant for his sleeping potion (martinis) and promptly fell asleep. That morning when they were getting off the plane the Flight Attendant asked Al if he knew who Volume 16 Issue 3

he had been sitting next to. Al answered “No” and she said Robert Redford. Al said “Robert Who?” From that point forward there is a standing joke that Al and Robert were sleeping partners. VA Medical Foster Homes

Nursing Home Alternative

A Medical Foster Home (MFH) can serve as an alternative to a nursing home. It may be appropriate for Veterans who require nursing home care but prefer a non-institutional setting with fewer residents. MFHs are private homes in which a trained caregiver provides services to a few individuals. Some, but not all, residents are Veterans. VA inspects and approves all Medical Foster Homes. The Homes have a trained caregiver on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This caregiver can help the Veteran carry out activities of daily living, such as bathing and getting dressed. VA ensures that the caregiver is well trained to provide VA planned care. You will continue to receive Home Based Primary Care services in the Medical Foster Home. You may also receive the following services from the Medical Foster Home caregiver. 1. For Veterans:  Help with your activities of daily living (e.g., bathing and getting dressed)  Help taking your medications  Some nursing assistance, if the caregiver is a registered nurse  All of your meals  Planned recreational and social activities 2. For Caregivers:  Peace of mind when Home and Community Based Services can no longer meet the Veteran's needs at home  A place to enjoy spending time with the Veteran You can use the below Shared Decision Making (SDM) Worksheet to help you figure out what long term care services or settings may best meet your needs now or in the future. There's also a Caregiver Self-Assessment (CSA) worksheet. It can help your caregiver identify their own needs and decide how much support they can offer to you. Having this information from your caregiver, along with the involvement of your care team and social worker, will help you reach good long term care decisions.  SDM: http://www.va.gov/geriatrics/guide/longtermcare/Shared_Decision_Making_Worksheet.pdf  CSA: http://www.va.gov/geriatrics/guide/longtermcare/Caregiver_Self_Assessment.pdf Your physician or other primary care provider can answer questions about your medical needs. Some important questions to talk about with your social worker and family include:  How much assistance do I need for my activities of daily living (e.g., bathing and getting dressed)?  What are my caregiver's needs?  How much independence and privacy do I want?  What sort of social interactions are important to me?  How much can I afford to pay for care each month? Medical Foster Homes are not provided or paid for by VA. To be eligible for a MFH you need to be enrolled in Home Based Primary Care, and a Home needs to be available. Your VA social worker or case manager can help you with eligibility guidelines for Home Based Primary Care and Medical Foster Home care. Also, with locating one and assist with making the arrangements. You will have to pay for the MFH yourself or through other insurance. The charge for a MFH is about $1500 to $3000 each month based on your income and the level of care you need. The specific cost is agreed upon ahead of time by you and the MFH caregiver. Talk with a VA social worker/case manager to find out if you are entitled to additional VA benefits that will help pay for a Medical Foster Home If a Medical Foster Home seems right for you, your VA social worker can help you locate one and assist with making arrangements. Also, at http://www.va.gov/GERIATRICS/Guide/LongTermCare/Locate_Services.asp you can use the Locate Services and Resources page to help you locate Medical Foster Homes.
