PRESIDENT’S NOTES JUNE 2016 This month’s theme is all about volunteering. It is a wonderful way to bond with one another in our common goal of ensuring the legacy of Korean War Veterans. Without the tireless effort of Chapter officers and members none of the following activities would happen: those who keep track of Chapter finances, membership records, those who arrive early on meeting days to prepare the meeting room, schedule events, contact members to remind them of meetings or notify members of those who are in the hospital. We had a couple of busy months with myriad activities below:    

Tell America presentations to Grand Prairie High School JR-ROTC students. Tell America presentations at Howe High School and the Sherman Rotary club. Meeting with Vietnam Vets GP and Parks Director to select statuary theme. Governor Abbott book signing and salute to veterans at the Dallas Convention

Center.  

Upcoming Korean-American Appreciation Night on May 28th at Globe Life

Park. Publication of new member directory with photos.

With all this being said, we need more help during the month, as well as before and after meetings. If you are physically able, all it takes is arriving 20 – 30 minutes early to help set up tables and chairs and others to remain longer after the meeting to help clear the tables and remove trash. I want to thank those who are doing a lot of work – and encourage [beg] the rest of our membership to help: 

   

A few volunteers have kept the Popcorn Project going almost since its inception but we still need more volunteers -- at least one day per month. I do want to recognize those that help with this: Ken Dillard, Jim Lucas (who is also quartermaster), Bob and Mary Couch, Bobbie Guiles, Don and Bea Oberholzer, and more recently Ron Lange and Delbert Tallman for their continued support. Bob Couch and his phone team Jim Wetmore and the Honor Guard Gene and Judy Richards who maintain the sick list Carolyn Fisher who sends flowers and cards that help keep us informed

Dave Moore has done yeoman work in updating our membership directory and establishing a Chapter Facebook page

There are more that I could name, but I think these make the point of the importance of those who help us meet our mission. If you think you can help with any of these important activities mentioned above, please let me know by phone or email – it’s a great way to get to know your fellow chapter members. And if what I’ve said wasn’t enough, we also need more to join Chapter leadership by being available to serve as officers during annual elections. All who belong to this chapter were part of a team when you served in your respective service. Now the Chapter needs your help to remain vital in telling the story of your success in Korea. Sincerely, Alves [A.J.] Key Jr. (President) Announcing the 2016 Peace Camp For Youth This is an excellent Opportunity for Grandchildren of Korean War Veterans – please read Mr. Wiedhahn’s email below if you have a grandchild who might be interested. Dates: 21–28 July 2016

With the 65th Anniversaries of the Korean War commemorations continuing this year, the Republic of Korea (ROK) Government has made the decisions to again commemorate not only the veterans from all the United Nation Countries and their contributions to saving their country from Communism, but to welcome the veteran’s grandchildren to Korea on a very special program in July. Called the "Peace Camps for Youth" (PCFY), this program was a huge success in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014 & 2015 and we have quotas to continue this great program in July….

Harris made the motion to approve the April Financial Report and Ted Short seconded and the motion passed with no objections. President asked Chaplain Don Jones to bless the food. Chaplain Jones blessed the food and President Key then asked all the Guests and Women and Handicap to go to the head of the luncheon line first. President Key called the meeting back to order to continue the meeting business. He introduced Jack Cooper who introduced our guest speakers Sunny Choi, Minja Fisher and Christina Kim. Sunny Choi who was a daughter of a North Korean family spoke on how the family escaped to South Korea and how they managed their lives in South Korea. She mentioned how her Father kept the Family together and then worked in South Korea until he was able to bring them to the United States where she attended School at a young age. Her Mother and Father worked hard and she was very thankful of how they managed the family both in North and South Korea and how they became Korean Americans. She thanked the members who served in South Korea and noted that in South Korea many have become Christian. She also said she has gone back to South Korea and visited some relations in North Korea. She says that those still in North Korea do not realize what freedom is and their lives are not easy. She then answered questions and asked her friends if they wished to add anything. Christina Kim did make a few remarks and also stated that she also wanted to thank the veterans who came to Korea to help in stopping the North Korean regime from establishing South Korea as a Communism Nation. All of the Korean American Ladies now attend a Baptist Church in Grand Prairie. COMMITTEE REPORTS: President Key read off those members on our sick list, put together by Gene and Judy Richards. He also noted that Marvin Dunn and Jim Wetmore were with us at this meeting, but still on our sick list. All still needed our prayers for further healing. He mentioned that Nate Stovall and Richard Vaughn were now out of the hospital and were doing better with their health problems. President Key reported that he has setup a presentation for the Rotary Club in Sherman to talk about the Korean War. A presentation at the Tom Bean High School on May 24, 2016, will be made on our “Tell America Program”. President Key, James Sharp and Jack Cooper will be making the presentations. President Key and Jim Sharp also gave our “Tell America Program” to the ROTC classes at the Grand Prairie High School on April 27th. OLD BUSINESS: President Key then introduced Don Jones who is the Nominating Committee Chairman who in turn stated that he and his two other committee members, Byron White and Daniel Dawkins, have signed up three members who have agreed to run for Executive Council Members. The election will be for three Executive Council Members, to serve a two year term beginning in June of this year, at the June Membership Meeting. Ballots will be placed in the June Bulldog Bugle with voting instructions. President Key reported that the members should save an August date for the State Department Annual Meeting. The date and place will be decided soon. He then introduced David Moore who gave information on the new Directory for the Chapter and asked that those who have ordered should pick up their Directories and pay for them as soon as possible. He has a few extras available. The price is $15 if you need a notebook to put the files in and if you have a notebook from the original Directory the files are $8. If you have any questions, please call him at 817-637-4876 or Bill Mac Swain at 817-244-0706. NEW BUSINESS: The Membership Meeting will be held on June 18, 2016 and will be a luncheon and entertainment furnished by the Korean American New Born Church. Members may bring desserts. Joke of the Month -- The Unknown Soldier

Walter Harber

Volume 16 Issue 6

A delegation from the USA came to Norway, and after the grand reception and everything, asked to be taken to the monument of the unknown soldier. The hosts became very confused, and didn't know what to do - they had no such thing - they feared a diplomatic incident! Suddenly - one of the hosts said - follow me! So - desperate as they were - they did - they followed him. Suddenly - they came to a hill, on top of which there was a statue of Sibelius. Puzzled, everyone asked him what was that supposed to be! and so he explained: "Sibelius was very, very famous as a composer, but as a soldier - he was completely unknown!"
