of Culture.”

Welcome to the Fourth Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium. Each year we invite world class performers and scholars from other countries, Texas Tech University, and the Lubbock community. This year is no exception. Participants will share their knowledge and expertise of Eastern and Western culture under the theme, “Rhythm of Life – Movement

I would like to thank the Museum of Texas Tech University, our cosponsor, as well as all sponsors, volunteers, participants, and friends who have helped make this Symposium a success. This Symposium would not be possible without the generous grants of The Center for Global Understanding and Humanities Texas. I believe this Symposium is a rare opportunity. Please enjoy our Symposium this afternoon.

Kyungah Nam President Sowoon Arts and Heritage

Welcome to the Fourth Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium, and to the Museum of Texas Tech University. We are very pleased to once again partner with Sowoon Arts and Heritage in delivering this significant annual event. At a time when our planet seems ever more riven with ethnic, cultural and political divisions, it is vital that we celebrate the diversity of our cultural traditions and the contributions that multiculturalism have made to this country and the world. We are all the stronger, all the better, for better understanding our fellow travelers on this lonely planet in its pilgrimage across a vast universe. As Mahatma Gandhi observed, “I want all the cultures of all lands blown about my house as freely as possible.” I am very happy that the Museum, this house, can welcome people from around the world, and host events such as this that enhance our appreciation of our cultural diversity and richness. I extend my thanks to Sowoon Arts and Heritage for their continued commitment to organizing this wonderful symposium, and to all of the sponsors who have contributed to making our Symposium happen this afternoon.

Gary Morgan, Ph.D. Executive Director Museum of Texas Tech University

The Board of The Center for Global Understanding is greatly honored to be able to play a part in making this symposium possible. The educational value and the benefits to those who have attended have been very worthwhile. Thank you for attending this year’s performance. I hope you find this symposium memorable, entertaining, and educational.

Just as the Fourth Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium seeks to deepen our collective understanding of our respective cultures, the TTU School of Music seeks to embrace music of the world through performance, research, creativity, and education. Certainly, this Symposium provides a wonderful vehicle for exploring cultural understanding through the language of music, as well as dance, and visual arts. An exciting moment this afternoon will be when the creative elements of dance are interwoven with masterful drumming. These improvisatory moments promise to serve as an aural and visual melding of two cultures, unique and memorable to all who are in attendance. Thank you to the fine sponsoring organizations for creating this memorable opportunity for the Lubbock community.

Joe Scarborough President The Center for Global Understanding

William L. Ballenger Director Texas Tech University School of Music

Welcome

Welcome to the Annual International Arts and Culture Symposium. This is the fourth year that Sowoon Arts and Heritage and the Museum of TTU have co-sponsored their outstanding program. Each year they have brought diverse cultures and performances to share with the people of Lubbock and the West Texas area.

Dr. Carolyn E. Tate shares her knowledge of the ancient art of the Americas through museum exhibitions, teaching, and academic publications. Her book, Yaxchilan: The Design of a Maya Ceremonial City, has been in print continuously since its 1992 publication. Her second book, Reconsidering Olmec Visual Culture: The Unborn, Women, and Creation, won Outstanding Academic Title 2012 from the American Library Association as well as the President’s Book Award 2013 from Texas Tech University. She organized the first major exhibitions of Olmec art to be shown in the US, The Olmec World: Ritual and Rulership, (Princeton University and Houston Museum of Fine Arts), and Olmec Art of Ancient Mexico, (National Gallery of Art).

Dr. Aliza S. Wong is Associate Dean of the Honors College and Associate Professor in the Department of History. She serves as the Director of European Studies, served three terms as a senator on the Faculty Senate, one term as the Faculty Senate vice president, and one term as Faculty Senate president. She is also the co-director and co-founder of the Open Teaching Concept: Teaching Diversity Across the Curriculum Program at Texas Tech University. She is a scholar of modern Italian history, a two-time Fulbright scholar, and an award-winning teacher.

Dr. Robert Moses Peaslee is Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Journalism & Electronic Media at Texas Tech University, where he teaches courses on film and television writing, popular culture industries, visual communication, and qualitative research methods. He also teaches Study Abroad courses in New Zealand, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. He earned his Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and also holds an M.A. in English Literature from The Citadel. He is the author, co-author, or co-editor of numerous journal articles, scholarly volumes, and journal special issues. He is supported in all things by his wife, Kate, and three children, Coen, Hazel and Nora.

Prof. Alan D. Shinn is Professor of Percussion and Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies at Texas Tech University. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri and the Master of Music degree from Texas Tech University. Prof. Shinn is Principal Timpanist with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and a former member of the Austin Symphony Orchestra. He is a busy drum set artist as well as an active clinician and adjudicator in this region. He is currently an Artist Endorser of Vic Firth and Paiste Cymbals. He received the 2009 William Kerns Performing Arts Award for his contribution to performing arts in Lubbock. Also, he received the Percussive Arts Society’s Lifetime Achievement in Education Award in 2012.

Dr. Eun Ha Park is an expert dancer, percussionist, educator, and the keeper of the Intangible Cultural Property of Korea No. 3, inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanities in 2009. Throughout her life, Dr. Park has amazed global audiences and fellow musicians as well as participants in her meticulously-run workshops with her talent, artistry, and commitment to her music. Dr. Park started playing Korean traditional music and performing Korean traditional dance at the age of five. Her professional career began in 1984 when she became a founding member as well as the first woman to join the Samulnori Troupe at the National Gugak Center (formerly, the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts), and currently is the leader of the Samulnori Troupe.

Ms. Joy Harris, born in College Station, is in high demand locally as a bass guitarist. Determined to finish her degree in percussion performance at Texas Tech, she also plays piano and saxophone, sings, and writes original songs.

LECTURES | Performance

Dr. Ben Haugland is Assistant Professor of Jazz at Texas Tech University. He received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Northern Colorado and the University of North Texas and his Doctor of Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Northern Colorado. He received nine DownBeat awards, including Best Instrumental Jazz Soloist. As a master’s student at the University of North Texas, he played and toured with the world renowned UNT One O’Clock Lab Band and is a featured soloist on their album Lab 2009, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. In 2015, Dr. Haugland received recognition as a pianist and as a composer for the album, A Million Dreams.

Soeljangguchum (설장구춤) Seoljanggu (설장구) is a solo dance with janggu (장구, a double-headed, hourglass-shaped drum) which takes place as part of an individual performance in Nongak (농악(農樂), Farmers’ Music). Seoljanggu has always been seen as a virtuosic act reserved for the best janggu player in a troupe. Dr. Park will perform seoljanggu of the Yang Doil tradition of Gyeonggi and Chungcheong provinces. The rhythmic patterns of seoljanggu in the Yang Doil tradition do not rely on complicated rhythms and have many empty beats/rests filled by dance movements. It uses many simple rhythms in both Chaepyeon (채편, right hand, struck with a stick) and Bukpyeon (북편, left hand, struck with a mallet). The dance movements of the feet and hand are small with details as well as big movements using wide spaces. Rhythms are played very softly in the beginning and they gradually get faster and louder. When Janggu is played at its best with hand and foot movements, it creates lots of joy and excitement as well as gracious dynamics.

Soechum (쇠춤) Soechum (쇠춤) or ggwaenggwari dance (꽹과리춤) is a small hand-held gong dance. Although it is the traditional Korean dance, the current form is one of the products of creative succession of Korean traditional art by a new generation of players. It is an epitome of artistic charisma with harmonization of the sharp metallic sound of ggwaenggwari (꽹과리, a small hand-held gong) and dance. As soe (쇠, metal) represents nature and chum (춤, dance) represents humanity, soechum pursues complete unity of nature and humanity. Its use of samulnori rhythm and sinawi rhythm with lots of variations is quite exotic and interesting. Its rhythm is based on canon but emphasizes virtuosity and improvisation by players. Dr. Park will perform alone at this symposium. When two players perform soechum, the highlight is the ‘tchaksoe (짝쇠)’ section, where two players play intricate hocketing on two ggwaenggwaris or other percussive instruments such as janggu.
