Heart of a Lion You know I never understood how imagining the audience naked was supposed to make you feel less nervous up here, honestly I’m just as uncomfortable right now…especially with Mr. Standlee over here. First of all, I’d like to start off by thanking everyone who is here today, supporting Borah High’s graduating class of 2016, a class that will go down in the history books forever. I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to be standing before you today. It’s honor to be representing you as Senior Class President and hopefully I have served you well. I’d also like to specifically thank my family, friends, teachers, and all others who have supported and helped me get to where I am today, I couldn’t have done without you. So as you are sitting in your chairs, I want you to close your eyes and imagine what you’re going to be doing this next fall. Then imagine where you will be in ten years from now. By visualizing this, I’m guessing there are a few butterflies dancing around in your stomach. But don’t worry because I feel the same way too. It’s ok to be nervous about the future. All of us are. Even those tough guys out there who might not admit it. The Future is an unpredictable event that can’t be changed or made permanent with all of the forces in the universe. The future is going to shift in ways in which you will never expect and all you can do is react to these events and keep marching towards that desired future of yours that you just visualized. But I don’t want to talk about that future you want to reach someday. I want to talk more about the journey you are going to take to get there. On the path that lies before you, are some of the happiest times of you will ever experience in your life. But not everything is always going to be sunshine and tweety birds. The rain is eventually going come too. But with recognizing there will be unexpected bumps in the road ahead, you can’t let fear hold you back, because if that fear holds you back in any way, you’re not living life to its fullest potential. A great mentor in my life, who is actually here today, once told me that if I ever want to get anything accomplished “My desire and resolve to succeed must be greater than my fear of failure.” Now when he first told me these words I didn’t really understand their full meaning and maybe some of you don’t either. But after they resonated in my mind, they made complete sense. If your fear to do something is greater than your desire to accomplish it, you will never do it. If you let this happen, progression towards your aspirations won’t occur and instead regression will take place. Never doubt in the abilities that you have, because you can truly do so much more than you think. All you have to do is believe in yourself enough and chances are the results will be in your favor. This journey you’re going to embark on is only going to happen once for you, so enjoy every second of it and don’t be afraid to make it enjoyable for those around you as well. Don’t be afraid to smile at the person in front of you or even more, ask them how their day is going? Because by doing this, you are not only going to make their lives happier and more meaningful, but yours will become much brighter too. There’s a quote by Maya Angelou that says, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Kindness cost nothing and to give up a few seconds of your personal time to benefit the life of another is one of the most selfless acts you can do. So when you get the chance today, to uplift another person, don’t miss it. Take that opportunity and make them show you their pearly whites. Kindness is contagious, so don’t be afraid to pass it on. As you leave here today, I hope you remember two things Class of 2016: share your happiness with others because you never know when they might need it most, and finally, never be afraid of what you’re able to accomplish in this world because the only thing that is going to limit you, is yourself. Congratulations and thank you.

We Are Borah I’m going to keep this short. I do not have any inspirational quotes and in no way will I try to teach you any life lessons because truth be told I still have no idea what I’m doing. I am ok with not knowing, it is one of the greatest things life has to offer. I’ve done a good bit of traveling in my short life. Between Venezuela in South America to all across the United States I have met countless of people. There have been the good, there have been the not so good and then I came to the city of Boise and Borah High School. Now the thing I am about to say is hard to explain but I mean every word of it. I know sometimes High School can just seem like a regular path everyone must walk, just a thing but I truly feel as though Borah is something more. From going to the football and basketball games to just walking down the hall and knowing so many of you, Borah gives me a feeling of pride. It is not only pride however because it really is a strange mix of emotions and as I thought over and over what I really felt all I can say is I have great affection for this school. To all of those I have met, you are the reason that I feel this way so I thank you for the great 3 years and to those I don’t know I truly wish you the best of luck to wherever your life takes you. As for my teachers, there have been many nights were you have definitely not been people I was very fond of but that is not how I usually felt. I feel honored to be your student and for all you do for us and how passionate you all are for giving as a great education and for that I thank all of you. So to end my speech I will leave you all the students with this. No matter what life may give you, good or bad, we are all united by this school and we are all Borah Lions. The way I see it, we are already winning. Thank you for your time.

Enjoy Well, I guess they saved the best speech for last? No, I’m kidding. That’s just something you get used to saying when you are the last guy to bat on your baseball team. Guys, you made it. And you made it, and you made it, and I guess even you guys made it too. We made it. These years have not been easy. Academically, physically, emotionally, we have all been challenged. You know, statistics are always claiming that a high school diploma is not enough anymore; that employers want more than that. But I say those statistics are flawed. The diploma we are about to receive is not just a ‘piece of paper’. It is a representation of everything we have been through, all of the physical and mental stress from relationships and academics; this ‘piece of paper’ is proof that we have all persevered, together. What employers want, and what the world needs, is not another 422 diplomas passed out, but rather, 422 individuals who have had the experience of having an essay due, a math test, and a competition all on the same day; individuals who have been up until 2 in the morning finishing a project, or on the phone consoling their best friend who is going through a tough breakup; individuals who get home at 11:00 from baseball games and football games and wake up at 6am the next morning to do it all over again; individuals who have been through all of this, and have persevered. With us tonight, we have 422 individuals who have done this, who have persevered. And the experience we have gained from that, no matter what any ‘statistic’ tells us, is what is going to make this Borah High class of 2016 successful in the world.

You know, memory is a funny thing. There’s this game I like to play, and you should try it sometime. It’s trying to remember the oldest memory that you can. Now, there are a few random images I can recall from my Kindergarten days, but my very oldest real memory is ironically one of the reasons I believe honesty is so important now. I’m in second grade, and there is a girl I had a ‘crush’ on, her name was Skylar Schossberger. We no longer talk (you’re about to find out why) so I feel comfortable sharing this. We were laying in the grass at Amity Elementary, and I was trying to start some conversation. So I ask her “Hey, so, what’s your favorite movie?” and she replies “Oh my gosh, the Chicken Little movie that just came out”. Now, I was yet to see this movie. But, pulling the classic ‘anything in common’ approach, I told her that was my favorite too, which wasn’t entirely wrong, the commercials were funny… But then she looks at me, and asks “well, what’s your favorite scene?” There were a few commercial scenes I could choose from, so I went with one where a chicken talks about screaming like a little girl. She looked at me very intently, and very suspiciously, and after a long pause says “They didn’t actually put that scene in the movie…” Needless to say, that ‘crush’ never did pan out. However, to this day, I remind myself that I shouldn’t lie, even if it might score you a few points with the ladies. The embarrassment is not worth it. So, I challenge you to remember your experiences in high school, and learn from them. Remember what you liked most about certain people, and try to be more like that toward others. Remember what you didn’t like about people, and never let yourself become that. For instance, when given a choice between two doors, you’ll never see me walking in through the left one because from 3 years of personal experience, I realize how annoying it is to open your door, on the right, and have 3 people walking directly into you. So I challenge you, don’t just be irritated by the crazy people in this world, learn from them. And as a closing thought, I want all of my fellow peers, even those in the audience, to imagine what you want in this world more than anything. It could be playing in the NBA or MLB, it could be a sports car, or vacation on a beach, or maybe even just a happy family. Imagine what you want more than anything right now. Alright, stop dreaming. I’m not going to give you the NBA or a million dollars. You’re not going to flash this diploma at a car dealership and be given a Lamborghini. Whatever you want in this life, you have to go get it. All of us wanted this diploma, or we wouldn’t be here. And after 3 HARD years, you succeeded. As my baseball coaches would say, everyone has faced adversity at some point along the way. It’s how we react that matters. During my Spanish AP test this year, the essay topic was about the ‘Duality of being”… in Spanish. I legitimately wrote “I don’t know” and turned in my test. All of us face things we can’t conquer but it’s the drive to get what we want that allows us to succeed. Whatever it is you want out of life, whatever you just dreamed about in your mind, never lose the drive to achieve it, because without it, life would be boring. Without the hard days, without the days where nothing is going correctly and you want to quit because you failed a class in college, or someone you knew well passed away, or people just aren’t giving you attention, without those days, we would never appreciate the good days we have. So, in a sense, appreciate the bad days. Refuse to let them hold you back from what you want, because it’s the bad days that make the good days so sweet. Congratulations on this success, and remember, it’s okay to slow down and enjoy life. Thank you.
