Starting a New Program ●
Schools interested in starting a new program must work with their Local District

Establishing a Dual Language and/or Foreign Language Immersion Program: 1.
Secondary Dual Language and Foreign Language Immersion Programs are made up of students who were previously enrolled in an Elementary Dual Language or Foreign Immersion program.
2.
Secondary schools with DLP or FLI elementary or middle school feeders may establish a program by engaging in a planning year process. During this year, schools attend informational meetings and enter into an application and approval process.
3.
The application, at a minimum, is reviewed by the following for approval: • Dual Language/Bilingual Programs Office • Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department • Master Planning and Demographics • Integrated Library and Textbook Support Services • Office of Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support • Office of the Superintendent

Pathway to Biliteracy Awards and the California Seal of Biliteracy World Languages and Cultures

LAUSD Pathway to Biliteracy Awards }
Awarded to students completing elementary (5th or 6th grade) and middle school (8th grade) for pursuing high achievement in English and in another language.

Students receive a certificate and honor medallion
}
Students can earn the Biliteracy award at end of 5th /6th grade and again in the 8th grade
}
Motivates students to attain the California Seal of Biliteracy in high school.

Criteria for LAUSD Pathway to Biliteracy Awards - English Proficiency Proficiency in English may be demonstrated by: •A grade of “A” or “B” in 7th grade ELA courses •Recommendation from 8th grade ELA teacher (for
2016 only)
•Teacher recommendation will be replaced by
SBAC criteria in subsequent years •SBAC criteria for 2017 and beyond is still to be
determined.

Criteria for LAUSD Pathway to Biliteracy Awards – Proficiency in Languages Other than English •A
score of 3 or higher on an essay written by the student in a language other than English •Scored by language-authorized school-site personnel using a
common rubric •Completed reading log signed by the student • At least ten grade-level books in a language other than English read independently by the student
