Rapid recommendations - Please read carefully how to install the software: First install FileMakerGo version 15 (if you do not have it), then the app - Make sure Location services is on and activated for FileMaker (Settings -> Privacy -> Location services -> “on” and check it is “on” for FileMaker Go) without location your good work will not be useful - Please do not record observations on your iPhone while you are driving… this defeats the purpose of the study - Thank you.

iDistracted Objectives The objective is to directly assess the incidence of distracted driving in road users around the world. How it works The software is a very simple filer based on FileMaker Pro version 15 language. One observation is one record in the database. It uses 1) the identifications of the phone user and the unique identification of the FileMaker installed to identify the different observers/devices; 2) Gets the date and time from the iOS system; and 3) the location (latitude & longitude) from the iPhone embedded GPS chip to allow future geo mapping of the observations. Some technical points - Logging the data is very fast and more than one observation per second can be done. The time limiting factor is acquiring the GPS location. Depending on the satellite exposure (longer between or inside tall buildings than in open area) the location acquisition may take up 10 to 15 seconds (faster with new iPhones than older, however routine is capped at 15 seconds or 50 meters precision whichever reached first). - To make the series of observations easier and more rapid, the position is determined for the first measurement i.e. up to 15 seconds wait - and then this position is used until a new position is requested either by going back on the main menu and clicking “Observe” or by clicking the “Update Location” button on the data acquisition screen. - The send new/all records buttons will generate an email with a Excel type attachment ready to be sent. All send records will be flagged as “send” and will not be sent again by the “send new records” function. Records will be sent using the mail function on your iPhone automatically (i.e. mail should be working and configured). - The data acquisition is based on a loop principle: As long as you “validate” data (by clicking one of the 4 distracted driver buttons) you’ll get a new empty observation screen (with the same GPS position) and the counter (top left of screen) will increase. To exit the loop, click “Cancel”. - Data storage is not an issue: 10,000 observations will use 1Mb and the empty app is 1.7 Mb. - Please do not record observations on your iPhone while you are driving… Thank you. Installation The app is a vertical app build on FileMaker Go version 15. All the database definition, the graphical interface and the observation data itself is in a single file called iDistracted 3.1. First install FileMaker Go 15 (free) on your iPhone: On the AppStore, look for FileMaker Go 15 (https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/filemaker-go-15/ id998694623?mt=8) and install it on your iPhone. To install the iDistracted app on your iPhone, either, 1) attach it to an email and open the email’s attached file on your iPhone: The mail will prompt you to link this file with an app, choose FileMaker Go 15 or 2) through iTunes, on the iPhone content. Under the app tab at the bottom of the screen, there are the apps which support files. Select on FileMaker and “add” file. Browse for iDistracted. Sync and disconnect your iPhone. You are ready to go. Important: To enable GPS positioning, first your location services (Setting -> Privacy -> Location services) should be “on” and second “Allow” when asked by FileMaker Go (only on it’s first use) to access your location. This can be checked/changed in Settings -> Privacy -> Location services -> “on” and check it is “on” for FileMaker Go. Without this, we will not be able to map your observations The system uses the passive GPS receiver chip, not 3G or wifi for observations. Therefore, there is no bandwidth use during observation. Observations can be done in airplane mode. Obviously sending data (which is sending an email) will requires wifi or 3G. Most important: Enjoy the project, share it with friends and colleagues. Loop data acquisition screen Number of observation from this batch of observations (i.e. from press “observe” on main menu). Include the open present observation. Gender selection (by default: Male) Vehicle in motion (by default: Moving): Idling refers to stopped at red lights, stops or in traffic. Parked refers to a vehicle with the ignition turned off. By defaults Moving Vehicle type selection. (by default: Passenger). Passenger vehicles include cars, minivans, crossovers, and pick-up trucks. Commercial vehicles include buses, taxis, and trucks.

Click accordingly on one of these 4 buttons depending the driver. behaviour. The observation will be validated and a new empty observation screen will be generated. "Safe" is for drivers with their attention on the road. "Talking" is for drivers talking on a cell phone or hands-free device. "Texting" is for drivers who are noticeably typing on their cell phone. "Other" includes all other forms of distracted behaviour such as eating, reading, etc. Go back to main menu without saving the actual observation

Notes ✓ Observing a moving car user takes one click one clic for male and 2 for women: Select the gender and button according to the distraction That’s it ✓ It takes up to 15 seconds to get the first measurement (GPS chip) and then GPS position is hold until updates or observation series stopped. ✓ Anytime, anywhere in the World: Observe. There is no restriction on the data sampling, location or time.
