BRECCIA Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society All American Club Volume 62 Number 3

San Jose, CA March, 2015

At the March General Meeting: March 24, 2015 There will be a Silent Auction! (What's that?} Items to be offered for bid are brought by members/guests and displayed on tables. Each item has a bid sheet. Bids are in 50 cent increments. The last name on the list wins the item, and pays the cashier.

What to bring? Bring just about anything. Items do not have to be hobby related. We have auctioned off homemade candies, plants, pottery, tools, and thingamajigs.

How it’s done? When the whistle blows, that bidding time section is closed. Bidders cannot start to write their name. There will be four bidding time periods. The president will announce the closing of each period, and the whistle will be blown. At the end of each time period, one of the four tables will be closed, signifying that the last name on the bid sheet wins the item. Example: The yellow cat table is closed. This is the signal that you can go see if you won anything on that table. If so, pick it up and take it to the bankers in the back by the kitchen. Pay for your items and you are set.

Payment: Cash, check, debit card, Visa, or Mastercard All proceeds go to the club treasury. Suggestions: -come early to add your item to the fun, and to see what other people have brought that you might like -bring a tote bag for your goodies

Randy’s Ramblings Hello Fellow Rockhounds, As most of you know, the annual festival is approaching fast. There are many areas that we need your help to make things go well. There will be a sign up list at the meeting. Please sign up to help in some area, whether it is Security or Ticket Sales or Hospitality or the Kids Area, or some other area. The duties are not difficult, but we need lots of people to help. I have about 50 Dealers signed up to come. We will also have Flint knapping, the Scholarship booth, Demonstrators, Gold Panning and the Fluorescent Display. There is set up on Friday April 17th, and tear down on Sunday after the festival ends. We need your help in all of these areas and others. Without you, it will be tough to do. Please call Frank Mullaney at (408) 691-2656 or June Harris at (831 4385150 and tell them how you can help. It was a pleasure to meet our scholarship recipients at the meeting. They will be helping with the Kid’s Area at the Festival. For those of you new to the club, we usually give out several scholarships each year to Earth Science majors at local universities. This year we are awarding five $1000 scholarships. The money for these scholarships is raised at the festival. The festival is also our major fund raiser for the club treasury. Without the festival income, we would need to raise membership dues significantly. The money raised at the festival pays for field trips, social events such as the Founder’s Day Picnic and Installation Dinner, Cabana Club rental expenses for meetings, insurance, and many other things. I look forward to working side by side with each of you to make this festival a great success. Randy Harris, President Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society San Jose, CA

Bragging Rights Theme The theme for April is the color “blue”. The Bragging Rights contest winner for February was: Chase Tomac for Juniors Louis Latronica for Adults. What are you bringing to enter?

Show and Tell Members’ Display Wow, nothing on display. What a shame. We were hoping to see some of your latest projects or things you have collected. For March, we will be having the silent auction, so no member displays. Let’s load the tables for April though. Members with last name starting with “G” or “H” are up for April, but anyone can bring something to share with the group.

Welcome to a new member Alan Achor—He is interested in cutting and polishing, collecting, fossils, minerals, and field trips. Breccia March 2015

Single item competition at the SCVGMS annual festival We will be sponsoring single item competition again at our festival in April. We hope that more of our members will be able to participate this year. This gives us all a way to show our work and learn how our items compare to others. The following are general rules for each category: All competitors shall be SCVGMS members. Each competitor shall be limited to one entry for each award offered. Each entry shall have been made within the last two (2) years. All workmanship must be done by the competitor. All items submitted need to have two labels, one with the competitor’s name and one without the competitor’s name, both with the material information. All items will be judged by the Uniform Rules of the American Federation and each item will start with 100 points. We are listing below the points which will apply to each group’s entries.
