ICSA’s 2015 annual international conference, held in Name Stockholm, Sweden at the end of June, demonstrated ICSA’s unique capacity to address and integrate the needs of its four main constituencies: former group members, families, helping Address professionals, and researchers. Like other recent conferences, the Stockholm conference had about 100 speakers who covered topics relevant to each of these groups. Addressvolunteers 2 ICSA also facilitated workshops for former members and families during the preconference day. Former members and SGAs are now the dominant ICSA constituency in terms of numbers. This year’s conference also had a very successful Phoenix Project Art & Literary Exhibit, as well as an evening of literary readings by former cultic-group members. Artistic expressions related to the Phone/Fax feelings of former cultic-group members can sometimes capture or reveal subtleties that elude analytic writing. Because of her work on the artistic dimension of cult involvement, expressed through Phoenix E-Mail exhibits and ICSA Today, Diana Pletts received ICSA’s Margaret T. Singer Award. Project

In 2015 ICSA expanded its social-media presence. ICSA’s Facebook page shares approximately two new postings a week. We now have more than 1,400 likes, compared to only several hundred a year and a half ago. Some posts reach 2,000 or more people. We now have more than 40 videos on ICSA’s YouTube channel. Most videos are talks from ICSA conferences, such as Dan Shaw’s talk (right) on traumatizing narcissism at the Santa Fe conference in November. More than 300 people now subscribe to the ICSA YouTube channel. Nearly 9,000 people have viewed the most popular video. We also have begun to post share buttons on pages in ICSA’s website, www.icsahome.com This means that people reading a recent ICSA Today article, for example, can easily share it with their friends on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter by simply clicking an icon on the web page.

ICSA continues to develop the Spiritual Safe Haven Network, a resource that facilitates outreach to churches and synagogues. Dr. Michael Langone, Dr. Carmen Almendros, and Rev. Robert Pardon developed a survey to assess churches’ experience with and interest in spiritual abuse. Rev. Pardon has begun pilot testing the survey in several churches. In 2016 we hope to obtain data that will help us plan how to most effectively expand this important project.

The New York Educational Outreach Committee, chaired by Maureen Griffo, continues with its work. Standardized public educational talks are in the final stage of development. In 2016 we plan to pilot test these talks on selected churches, synagogues, and schools, and then create a speaker referral service.

The International Journal of Cultic Studies (IJCS) continues to publish important scholarly articles. Of special note in 2015 was Alan Scheflin’s article, “Supporting Human Rights by Testifying Against Human Wrongs,” which offers suggestions on how the well-established legal concept of undue influence can be extended to cover cases of cultic control.

ICSA’s free speech project, which explores how cultic groups may suppress the free speech of critics, moves ahead. Volunteer Esther Friedman gave a fascinating talk on the project at the Santa Fe conference and is preparing papers for publication.

In 2019 ICSA will celebrate its fortieth anniversary, an event that underlines the importance of leadership continuity. With this need in mind, the ICSA Board of Directors—the third generation of ICSA leaders—appointed in 2015 an advisory board consisting of committee chairs and individuals whom the Board believes have potential to become future leaders of ICSA.
