STARTUP BOOT CAMP BOGOTA, COLOMBIA OCTOBER 21, 2015 GIST (Global Innovation through Science and Technology) empowers young innovators through networking, skills building, mentoring, and access to financing to develop startup solutions that address economic and development challenges. Since 2011, GIST has engaged with more than 2.8 million innovators and entrepreneurs worldwide, and mentored over 4,500 startups that have generated more than $110 million in revenue. GIST inspires, identifies, supports, and connects young innovators across the globe through:



GIST Net helps the most connected generation in history advance their ventures by sharing and learning from peers and successful entrepreneurs with diverse backgrounds and experiences. GIST Net supports science and technology entrepreneurs in emerging economies as they build innovative new businesses to tackle their community’s most pressing challenges.



TechConnects are live interactive webcasts on entrepreneurship topics that enable global youth to ask leading experts for advice.



Startup Boot Camps support science and technology (S&T) startups through hands-on mentorship, training activities and information on funding, led by U.S. and local entrepreneurs and investors.



The GIST Tech-I Competition is an annual competition for science and technology entrepreneurs from emerging economies worldwide. Aspiring innovators pitch their ideas and startups through videos voted on globally and reviewed by experts to determine the finalists who will attend the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). Finalists also receive 3 months of one-to-one mentoring, and Tech-I winners receive funding to advance their innovations.

Gary Hoover is the rare combination of a business scholar and practitioner. He began the learning side by studying businesses large and small at the age of 12, and later studying under four Nobel Prize winning economists at the University of Chicago, including Milton Friedman. His practical side led him to be a stock analyst on Wall Street and then a retail executive at Fortune 500 companies until he started his first company in Austin, Texas over 30 years ago. That was BOOKSTOP, the first chain of giant book superstores, later purchased by industry leader Barnes & Noble. Then he went on to found the company that evolved into Hoovers.com, one of the world’s leading company information websites. Hoover’s went public in1999 and is now owned by Dun & Bradstreet. In 2009 he became the first Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the highly ranked McCombs Business School of the University of Texas at Austin, a role he now serves in the same University’s graduate School of Information. He mentors entrepreneurs and speaks to corporate and government leaders worldwide. He recently founded his 6th startup, The Spark, to be Austin’s museum-like innovation experience. Gary lives near Austin in his 56,000-book personal reference library.

Agostinho Almeida Agostinho Almeida holds a degree in Biology, a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and an International MBA, having lived in three different countries (USA, Portugal and Colombia). He has over a decade of experience in executing and managing R&D at Portuguese and Colombian research institutes, with a strong focus on Life Sciences. Since 2011, he has been working with Colombian companies from different sectors, supporting them in Innovation Management, Business Development and Strategy. He was Director of Tech Transfer of a local triple helix institution leading university-industry-government relations and the development of a regional tech transfer model for Antioquia, Colombia. Also, he has co-founded tech-based Portuguese companies that operate in different industry sectors. Currently, he is an investment manager at Promotora, a Colombian venture capital fund manager, and an associate professor at the University of Eafit.

Heath Naquin Heath Naquin serves as Executive Director for the SW I-Corps Node at The University of Texas at Austin. Previously, he served as a Managing Director for a multi-university NSF Industry University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC). Heath was a founding member of three different start-up business initiatives across sectors. He has helped companies raise more than $30 Million in funding. Heath actively works on international commercialization initiatives and efforts focusing on industry collaboration, new project development and deployment along with building linkages between industry, government, academia and the venture capital community. Heath has worked in more than 20 countries on international commercialization and entrepreneurship initiatives in countries such as Colombia, Jordan, Iraq, Korea, Mexico, Portugal, Armenia, and Turkey. Mr. Naquin has extensive experience with the NSF, EPA and NIH SBIR programs as an active commercial reviewer for many years. Heath also currently serves as Faculty for the Concordia University Executive MBA program Entrepreneurship and Innovation course.

Sarah Staton Dr. Sarah J. R. Staton is an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science & Technology Policy Fellow in the Office of Science and Technology Cooperation in the Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES). Dr. Staton works to promote science, technology, and innovation entrepreneurship through international collaboration and education with a focus on women and underrepresented groups. She came to the Department of State from the Naval Research Laboratory where she was a National Research Council (NRC) Postdoctoral Fellow. For her research she has been awarded the Fulbright Scholarship, the Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship, and has generated multiple pieces of patented IP. Dr. Staton earned her Ph.D. in bioanalytical chemistry from Arizona State University and her B.A. in biochemistry from William Jewell College.

Haley Smith In her current position with the Global Innovation through Science and Technology initiative (GIST), Haley works with the State Department’s implementing partners to host a series of technology Boot Camps for science and technology entrepreneurs in emerging economies. Haley came to the State Department after three years living in Dhaka, Bangladesh, where she worked on USAID’s Political Party Strengthening Program for Democracy International. In this role, Haley developed a training program for grassroots political youth leaders, and a multiparty program to address the issues of political violence and dialogue in the country. Prior to DI, Haley spent two years in the Obama Administration working for former Secretary Steven Chu at the Department of Energy as his Director of Scheduling. In addition she also has spent several years on both sides of Capitol Hill and on campaigns. She holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of South Carolina.

Mandy Sutton Mandy Sutton is a senior program coordinator at IC2, supporting the activities of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Innovation through Science and Technology program (GIST) and the National Science Foundation I-Corps program. In these roles, she focuses on giving young entrepreneurs, engineers and scientists around the world the resources, mentoring, and tools they need to be successful. Before joining IC2, Mandy served as a study abroad coordinator for five years at UCLA and at Arcadia University’s London, UK center. During her international education career, she prepared hundreds of undergraduate students to further their education abroad through one-on-one counseling, specialized programming, and instruction sessions. Mandy holds a BA in English from UCLA and a MS in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.
