Stewardship Briefly Noted

by the Reverend Canon Matthew T.L. Corkern, Rector Stewardship means a myriad of things to most parishes, large and small. At Calvary Church, this concept has been defined and recorded in a long-range plan as “taking care of those things we have been given to the benefit of an interconnected personal, regional and international community.” In simplest terms, clergy and members are expected to return focus from ourselves by returning the gifts we have received from God. Our 2016 theme offers a panoply of views of walking together, through being “in Partnership for Giving and Receiving.” In recent years, stewardship ideas have pervaded every aspect of this Church community. Therefore, one hopefully witnesses more than just fund-raising. The parish priests and lay-leaders have banded together asking the congregation to invest for the future, to build to grow! Indeed, this concept has gone beyond mere sermons and every-member-canvases to the recruitment and rebuilding campaign of 2014-2015. Yet, we now shift our focus to the vibrant Parish Life, which demands the maintenance of buildings but also the preparation of each living group of children, youth and adults in their spiritual formation. Some have said that the reign of God is always near, very near. I invite you to the distinctiveness of that calling. Let us turn our gifts toward being always in relationship through prayer, reverence, mirth, vulnerable emotion, beauty, and thankless acts of compassion. Let us join in preparing for needs of OUR COMMUNITY with visionary thoughts and generous gifts.

Pledging Clarification In early October, our Stewardship Chairs approached each household in one of two ways. Those of you who had pre-pledged an amount for 2016 received a Verification Form to confirm the pledge, which we asked you to sign and return to the parish finance office. Those of you who are new to the congregation or had not yet pledged for 2016 received a Pledge Form on which to record your annual gift for the ministries and missions of this place. Please return the card to the parish finance office.

PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO ENGLAND

Pilgrimage Pathways: Canterbury and the County of Kent* A Journey of History, Art, Architecture, Literature, Politics and Religion

  1-10 July 2016

You are invited to discover and embrace the concept of PILGRIMAGE through an enchanted land of time and place. This year’s travels were inspired by the prayer of Dean Robert Willis: Almighty and Everlasting God, you have made our County of Kent throughout the history of this nation to be both a symbol of the strong defence of its sovereignty and also a sign of its welcome to those who journey here. We give you heartfelt thanks for the abiding beauty of this ‘Garden of England’, of marsh, down and weald, dockyard and Medway town, white cliff and pilgrim way, and pray that the daily life and work of our communities may demonstrate an equal beauty in the welfare, development and care of every member. Bless this county and prosper with your grace all its creative endeavors, that in their upholding of truth, justice and liberty its people may ever remain ‘Invicta’ – Unconquered – an encouragement of service to our nation and a beacon of hope for all humanity, through Jesus Christ of Lord. Amen On the occasion of my thirtieth pilgrimage, I allowed these vibrant words to guide our ten-day journey as a way to truly encounter the people and places who make Canterbury and the County of Kent dramatic and breathtaking, yet unique the world-over. Each setting will allow for an experience not only of learning but also of tranquility…a respite from the frantic pace of modern life…and a chance to joyously laugh with kindred souls! Come explore: Ancient Places tied to St Augustine; vineyards and forests of the Tudor Kings; Laughter in country-pubs and seaside villages; Medieval Prophets and Pilgrim sites at Chaldon, West Malling, Chilham and Barfreston; The Great Country-houses and Gardens of Kent at Knole House, Penshurst Place, Walmer Castle, Doddington Place and William Morris’ Red House; Chagall Glass in Tudeley; RAF Folkestone Museum and the White Cliffs of Dover; intimate experiences to explore Art, Architecture and Worship with the scholars and parishioners of our mother-cathedral; Baptismal Renewal at the oldest parish church in England; as well as people and events in and around the Cathedral city of Canterbury. Our ancient faith calls us to encounter the contemporary world through friendships formed across these native lands of culture, history and religion. To express interest or obtain further details, please contact Matthew Corkern by email [email protected] or call 908-277-1814. *Please note this pilgrimage is priced at $4200 as an all inclusive of everything except air-travel and insurance. This trip is based on double-occupancy, but single may be accommodated upon sign-up.

Conversations with the Rector

A Password for Peace of Mind: Assume Nothing! by the Reverend Diana Doyle Clark

You might think that once a hospital has your Advanced Care Directive, you’ve no need to remind them if you’re hospitalized again. Not so! Even if you show up at the hospital two weeks later, you should once again provide a copy of your directive to the Hospitalist or the Nurse Manager. It’s also important to remember that the hospital does not call clergy to let them know you’re ill. It’s a good idea to carry a card in your wallet with Calvary’s information—just in case!

Healing Prayer Ministry to Begin on Sunday, 8 November by the Reverend Dr. Robert Morris, Priest Associate

“Is any sick among you? Let them call upon the elders, and let them lay their hands on them and pray for them, anointing them with oil.” - James 5:14 Modern health care now recognizes the power of mind and spirit in the process of healing—a truth deeply enshrined in Christian belief and practice. In the past half-century, the early Church practice of prayer, the laying-on-of-hands, and anointing with holy oil of the sick, troubled and needy has been renewed powerfully in a wide spectrum of Churches. Such prayer has been featured at Calvary at one time or another in Calvary’s history, and will now be developed as a new ministry for our people under the guidance of the Rev. Dr. Robert Corin Morris. Beginning on Sunday, 8 November, those who wish may present themselves, after receiving Communion, at the Baptistry rails, where members of a new team of trained ministers, lay and ordained, will offer healing prayers.

Middle School Youth Group

by Alice Corkern, Anna Tinker, James Nelson and Matthew Corkern The Middle School Youth have had an amazing few weeks of growing together through service to others and pure fun. Our first project was to decorate pumpkins and make Halloween goodie bags for Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Overlook. The 12 pumpkins and 24 gift bags were joyfully accepted by Dora Strickland, the director of services, on 17 October. On Sunday, 20 October, the youth created, served, and hosted our guests at Family Promise. On 1 November, we will gather after the Evensong and Re-dedication of the Tiffany Window to discuss “The Beatitudes” and what they are saying to us. The following weeks will involve a Paint Ball Outing, Apple Picking and delivering to the homeless, Blanket Drive, Turkey Drive, Capture the Flag, as well as a Scavenger Hunt and Hide-n-Seek. Our mission this year is to be of service to others, examine ourselves in todays world and God’s Kingdom, participate in worship together, and have a lot of fun! We invite all Middle School Youth to join us each week for Sundays@Five followed by our Youth Gathering. Calvary Episcopal Church ~ 908-277-1814 ~ [email protected] ~ www.calvarysummit.org ~ 9

Level I Atrium Update

by Natalie Dougherty, Bo Humphrey and Sarah Ross. Catechesis of the Good Sheppard aims to explore and enrich your child’s relationship with God. It is an “invitation to wonder” in a quiet environment designed to be contemplative and enjoyable. It is in this quiet work that children develop their own pathway to God through the liturgy and traditions they are learning. This Fall we are welcoming back many students and are delighted to have some new students eager to learn about the Atrium. In these early weeks, we introduced the children to their Atrium and focused on lessons in the grace and courtesy we need to use with our neighbors as we work alongside each other. We had a procession with song and ceremony to set our prayer table. Then we invited conversation about the significance of the different items we used. Many of the children are focusing on their practical life exercises. While it looks like they are merely pouring rice or polishing silver, these practical life experiences have enormous fundamental value for their spiritual growth. Developmentally, these exercises help the child strengthen the fine and gross motor skills they will need to move on to more in-depth lessons such as the preparation of the cruets. Spiritually, these exercises allow the children to slow down, observe, and listen. It is in this “quiet” that the children begin joyful contemplation. It is our pleasure to serve your children and we are looking forward to the Advent season. Please let us know if you would like to observe in the Atrium. We are happy to make the arrangements. Also, if you would like to volunteer please let us know. An Atrium needs many hands: people who can sew, work with clay, and many other tasks are needed to keep the environment ready for the children of the Parish. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. We are blessed with a wonderful community of parents and children and we are so grateful for the support of the Parish. 10 ~ Calvary Episcopal Church ~ 908-277-1814 ~ [email protected] ~ www.calvarysummit.org

Adult Spiritual Formation Forums Sundays at 9:30 am, in the Parish Hall

Comprehending Sacred Time & Sacred Space Lord God, may we delight in the rooms and buildings that set our horizons; May we learn to live together creatively in the limits of time and space; Illumined by the light that comes from beyond in which we glimpse eternity. Amen. ~ Dan Tyndall, Vicar of St Mary Redcliffe November 1 Calvary’s Tiffany Window Restored Presenter: Dr. Arthur Femenella, Sr. The forum will be held in the Church. Part of Calvary’s legacy and our collective responsibility is our extraordinary “Beatitudes” wheel-window at the narthex of our Church. The window was designed by the studio of Louis Comfort Tiffany and installed in the Church around 1896. Other examples of Tiffany glass from this era are on permanent display in the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The window represents one of the most exquisite and largest stained-glass windows by Tiffany. Now, 118 years after installation, this extraordinary window has received a much-needed major repair and cleaning from the studio of Femenella & Associates of Branchburg, and Dr. Femenella will talk about the restoration process prior to the window’s re-dedication at the 10:30 am service. 8 Episcopal Church General Convention Presenter: The Rev. November 2015 The Spiritual Journey and the Coming Interspiritual Age In their groundbreaking book The Coming Interspiritual Age, Johnson and Ord look at spirituality from a historical and evolutionary perspective and give us a glimpse into the transformative possibilities that the future holds. Author Kurt Johnson describes inter-spirituality as “the sharing of ultimate experiences across traditions, making accessible to more and more people an expansion of consciousness through the many forms the human spiritual journey offers.” While institutional religion may be declining, inter-spirSunday, November 15 ituality seems to be on the 2:00pm-4:00pm rise. What is the meaning behind these trends? Kurt $30 ($25 members) Johnson will speak about the CSJB, Mendham shift to interspirituality and what is emerging within this important movement as we come to understand and embrace the mystic heart we all share. Kurt Johnson is well known internationally as a scientist, comparative religionist, social activist and former monastic. With a PhD in evolution, ecology, systematics, and extensive training in comparative religion and philosophy. Kurt will be joined by Yanni Maniates, from Princeton NJ, who was a major colleague of his during the early interfaith work and has now become active again in the interspiritual work.
