What Pope Francis Recently Said About Abortion and the Year of Mercy This week, Pope Francis wrote a letter to the president of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelisation. The letter was on the subject of the forthcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy (which begins on 8th December 2015). The letter made the international news because of comments Pope Francis made on the subject of abortion. Many news organisations don’t fully understand the Church’s teaching on abortion and the sacrament of reconciliation. It’s worth reading what Pope Francis wrote and reflecting on the implications. Pope Francis wrote the following: “One of the serious problems of our time is clearly the changed relationship with respect to life. A widespread and insensitive mentality ‘I think in particular of all the women who have resorted to has led to the loss of the proper personal and social sensitivity to welcome new life. The tragedy of abortion is experienced by some with a abortion. I am well aware of the superficial awareness, as if not realizing the extreme harm that such an pressure that has led them to this act entails. Many others, on the other hand, although experiencing this decision.’ moment as a defeat, believe they they have no other option. I think in particular of all the women who have resorted to abortion. I am well aware of the pressure that has led them to this decision. I know that it is an existential and moral ordeal. I have met so many women who bear in their heart the scar of this agonizing and painful decision. What has happened is profoundly unjust; yet only understanding the truth of it can enable one not to lose hope. The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father. For this reason too, I have decided, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, to concede to all priests for the Jubilee Year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it. May priests fulfil this great task by expressing words of genuine welcome combined with a reflection that explains the gravity of the sin committed, besides indicating a path of authentic conversion by which to obtain the true and generous forgiveness of the Father who renews all with his presence.” The first point to note is that Pope Francis’ letter will not change the practice in our own diocese. In the Dublin Archdiocese (and in many other dioceses) the local bishop has already delegated this faculty to every priest who can hear confessions. A priest in the Dublin Archdiocese can fully absolve a contrite penitent who has the sin of abortion on their conscience, and restore them to a joyful and living relationship with the Lord and the Church.

‘The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the Sacrament of Confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father.’

Pope Francis states that abortion is a tragedy, and that it causes ‘extreme harm’. Pope Francis is not under-playing the seriousness of abortion. He mentions ‘the gravity of the sin committed’ and talks about repentance and conversion being necessary. At the same time, in anticipating the Jubilee Year of Mercy, he is thinking very specially of the women who have resorted to abortion. He is aware of the pressure that led them to the decision. He has met many women who carry in their hearts the scar of this agonizing and painful decision.

In order to encourage women who have had an abortion in the past to avail of the tender mercy of God, he is granting to all priests the faculty to absolve the sin of abortion and to lift the automatic excommunication which is usually incurred in having an abortion. Of course, it’s not only the woman concerned who carries the guilt of abortion. Anyone who is involved in an abortion carries guilt for the sin. This includes a man who may have forced or pressured a woman into having an abortion, doctors and medical staff who carry out the abortion, even politicians who make abortion legal. Although Pope Francis only makes specific mention of the women concerned, all who are involved in an abortion are invited to seek the Lord’s mercy and forgiveness. The final point to make is that we don’t have to wait for the Jubilee Year of Mercy to seek the Lord’s mercy in the sacrament of reconciliation. We can all seek forgiveness for our sins today and everyday. And of course, absolution for all sins will be available after the Jubilee Year of Mercy. The Year of Mercy is not a limited time special offer. God’s mercy is available always in this beautiful sacrament.
