We pray for those who have died recently: Peter Watters (Rathcoole) We extend our deepest sympathies To his family and friends. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord And may perpetual light shine upon him. Living the Joy of the Gospel Building Our Community of Faith Work continues to progress on the renovation of our Church of The Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary in Saggart. It will be a great comfort to have the outside of our beautiful building restored completely and securely in the coming weeks. This important work will allow the next generation and the generations to come to celebrate their faith under this roof as you and I have. With the restoration nearly completed on the outside, we begin to turn our attention to the inside of our Church and the work that needs to be completed there. To be able to properly show the work we are hoping to complete with your help; to create a bright and welcoming space for everyone who attends mass we are hosting weekly group tours and information evenings for our parish Church. I hope to reach out to as many parishioners as possible in this way. How can you help? If you receive an invitation please accept it, or if you receive a call from one of the volunteers on my behalf, please come to one of the events. Fr Enda Brian O’Keeffe RIP - Newcastle Brian O’Keeffe, formerly of Main Street, Newcastle died in England recently. He will be specially remembered at Mass in Newcastle on Saturday 28th March at 7.00pm. Brian’s mortal remains were cremated, and his ashes will be in St. Finian’s Church on the evening of March 28th.

Ministers of the Word in Newcastle We offer a sincere Míle buíochas to Jim Luddy for his work in organising the roster of Mass Readers in Newcastle for many years. Jim will continue to organise the Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist We apologise for the delay in posting this year’s Easter Roster. Contact numbers and an e-mail address (if available) of current readers would help greatly in organising the roster. New Readers are always welcome. As we celebrate Holy Week and Easter, perhaps you might consider taking on this service to all in the parish into the future. Bridget Breen 086-1762532 [email protected]

Receiving Holy Communion Practice For those who are gluten-intolerant (coeliac), the Parish Council in Saggart/Rathcoole/Brittas have secured the availability of gluten-free hosts. Simply go the priest and discreetly request a glutenfree host, which are contained in a separate ciborium which he alone will use. People with mobility issues may inform the priest/minister of their need for assistance by having a companion stand in their place when holy communion has been distributed, so that it may be brought down to them in their seat. We hope these simple measures will be helpful.

Celebrating the Year of Consecrated Life In this year, dedicated to the consecrated life, we will print some articles about Irish founders of religious orders. The next article in this series is about Venerable Nano Nagle. Nano Nagle Founder of the Presentation Sisters - A short synopsis by Eleanor McBennett Nano (Honora) Nagle was born in Ballygriffin, Co. Cork, in 1718. She was the eldest of six children. Nano had a privileged upbringing as her family was connected to some of the most prominent families in Munster. At this time in history the Irish were denied access economically, politically, socially, and educationally to the rights and means that would have raised them from the imposed poverty and oppression. It was a crime of treason (punishable by death) to educate the Irish and it was forbidden to practice the Roman Catholic faith. Because of her family’s position and wealth, and through their contacts abroad, Nano was sent to Paris where she received a full catholic education and immersed herself in the exciting Parisian social life there, including balls, parties, and theatre outings. It is said that on returning from one of these parties an incident changed her life and outlook. She saw a small group of poor working people waiting in front a church for the door to open for early Mass. The contrast between their useful lives and her own empty one devoted to pleasure, made a lasting impression on the girl of twenty-two. Returning to Ireland, other events led Nano to consider a way that she could help the poor she saw every day in Cork and on the family estate. Distressed by the ignorance of the Irish in both faith and academics, she secretly opened her first school in 1754 with an enrolment of thirty-five girls in a two-room cabin. Thus began her great work of education and, as some historians have noted, her important work in saving the Irish culture. Within nine months she was educating 200 girls and by 1757 she had opened nine schools including two for the education of boys. She opened homes for aged women, and began conducting adult classes as well. Without regard for her own safety, she selflessly educated the children during the day and visited and nursed the sick by night. As a result, she became known in Cork as the Lady with the Lantern, the symbol of the Sisters of the Presentation worldwide. Eventually, realizing the need for a group to continue her work after her death, Nano founded the Sisters of the Presentation on December 24, 1775. Nano only received the habit on 29 June 1776, as prior to that it was forbidden by law for religious to leave the convents. Nano died from tuberculosis, on 26th April, 1784. As her legacy she bequeathed to her Sisters the treasure which she prized above all the wealth of the earth – the love of the poor of Jesus Christ. She bid them to ‘Spend yourself for the poor.’” In the years since Nano Nagle’s death, the Sisters of the Presentation have carried her spirit around the world in a variety of ministries and in 2000, she was voted Irish Woman of the Millennium in recognition of her importance as a pioneer of female education in Ireland. Nano Nagle was declared venerable by Pope Francis on 31st October 2013. Speaking at the time, Head of the Congregation Leadership Team for the Presentation Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mary Deane, said: “We are delighted with the news. By proclaiming Nano Nagle as venerable, the Universal Church has recognised Nano as a woman of Faith, hope and heroic virtue whose vision and work transformed the lives of so many. For our Sisters, Associates and Friends of Nano throughout the world, Nano has been and continues to be a source of inspiration and challenge as we respond to the needs of today in fidelity to the Gospel and in the spirit of Nano.” Extract from St. Patrick’s Breastplate After St. Patrick’s Day, we reflect on the most famous prayer of our patron saint I arise today, through God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to look before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's shield to protect me, God's host to save me From snares of devils, From temptation of vices, From everyone who shall wish me ill, afar and near. Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.
