THIS IS A FREE EVENT FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS BUT PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED The ACADEMY will include three breakout sessions on a wide variety of topics. Seating is limited. Pre-registration is required to attend the breakout sessions. The RESOURCE FAIR will feature a variety of local and state agencies and service providers.

Breakout Session Descriptions Session 1: 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. 101 – Special Education Law and the Rights of Parents under IDEA This presentation will provide a general overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and other Special Education Law provisions and practices in the exercise of the rights of parents and students. Presenter: Luis Echeverria, South Texas Regional Staff Attorney, Disability Rights Texas (This presentation will repeat in sessions 2 and 3) 102 – Transitioning From School to Work and Beyond with DARS Assistance DARS is the Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services, a state agency that provides support and services to adults with disabilities. This presentation will provide an overview of the post-secondary vocational services offered by DARS, including: the Vocational Rehabilitation Process, Transition Planning, Eligibility, Services Offered, Getting to Work and a discussion on the myths that create barriers to a better and more productive life. Questions and Answers will be an important facet of the presentation. Presenters: Jeremy Martin, Area Manager; Liz Maresh, Transition Vocational Rehab Counselor; Megan Bennett, Vocational Counselor for the Deaf; Victoria DARS Office (This presentation will repeat in session 2) 103 – Life Beyond High School This presentation will provide an overview of the services offered by Gulf Bend Center to individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities who have or will soon age-out and/or graduate from high school. The goal of the presentation is to inform parents/caregivers of options and to generate thoughts about what they envision life after high school to be for their loved one. Participants will be encouraged to begin planning early and laying the foundation for a support system that will ease the transition from high school to the next phase of life. The Supported Employment and Day Habilitation programs will be discussed. Presenter: Megan Tuttle, Director of Consumer Support Services, Gulf Bend Center (This presentation will repeat in Session 2) 104 – How to Encourage Positive Behavior Nobody wants to be difficult. Resistance or opposition is usually triggered by our children feeling unsafe. This presentation will introduce a simple 3-step triangle which when utilized appropriately can reduce negative reactions and enhance positive behavior choices. Presenter: Lane Johnson, M.Div., LPC; Associate Executive Director/Clinical Services, Gulf Bend Center (This presentation will repeat in Session 2) 105 – “The World in My Shoes” – A Parent’s Perspective of Autism We can raise awareness of Autism by helping others understand what it is like in “their world”. This hands-on presentation will include a simulation to help participants understand how overwhelming “our world” can be for people on the Autism spectrum. The discussion will include practical coping and behavioral strategies, the power and use of visual supports in the home, and real-life suggestions from a parent perspective. Presenter: Kimberly Rickman, Mother of a teen with Autism and Founder of Connect 2 Autism (This presentation will repeat in session 3) 106 – Practical Strategies for Parenting a Child with a Disability Parents and parent trainers will learn ways to support children in their home environment using various visual supports. Schedules, routines, labeling the environment and visual behavior supports will be shared as ways to help children understand the world around them and our expectations for them. Presenter: Lottie Tomko, Texas State Lead for Low Incidence Disabilities, Region 3 Education Service Center (This presentation does not repeat) Session 2: 10:45 – 12:00 noon 201 – Special Education Law and the Rights of Parents under IDEA (This presentation is a repeat. See Session 104 description) 205 – Guardianship and Alternatives to Guardianship: Everything You Need to Know Guardianship can be a complex and difficult decision for parents of children with disabilities. This presentation will help participants understand when guardianship is appropriate and when alternatives to guardianship are better suited for the individual. Presenter: Trelisha Brown, Esq. M.S., J.D.; Attorney for Texas Legal Services Center (This presentation will repeat in session 3) 206 – Facilitation and the Collaborative ARD Process Fa-cil-i-tate: To make easy or easier. This presentation will provide information on the benefits of a facilitated ARD meeting that includes improving parent and school relationships, maintaining student focused meetings, and effective communication. Presenter: Fred Shafer, Shafer Consulting, LLC. Mr. Shafer retired after 36 years in the special education profession. He has served as Coordinator for Special Education, Region 3 ESC - Victoria; Executive Director for Special Education, Katy ISD; and Director of Special Education, Region 4 ESC – Houston. (This presentation will repeat in session 3) Session 3: 1:00 – 2:15 pm 301 – Special Education Law and the Rights of Parents under IDEA (This presentation is a repeat. See Session 101 description) 302 – Is Your Child a Target of Bullying? This presentation will provide participants with a practical understanding of what bullying is and the impact it can have on children with disabilities. Participants will learn about the different types of bullying, intervention strategies and the role that adults can play in the prevention of bullying. Presenter: Brenda Nelson, Regional Coordinator for Partners Resource Network – TEAM Project (One session only, this presentation does not repeat) 303 – Services and Supports for People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities This presentation will provide an overview of services and supports available through the local mental health authority, Gulf Bend Center, for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Information on the Home and Community Services waiver program (HCS) will be discussed as well as intake procedures to obtain services.
