Karl L. King, march composer, is a name synonymous with Henry Fillmore and John Phillip Sousa. Born in Paintersville, OH, King was a self-taught musician that joined a circus band, eventually joining the famous Barnum and Bailey’s Circus Band. He wrote over 300 works, including 188 marches. King is perhaps best known for helping to pass the “Iowa Band Law,” which allowed local municipalities to levy taxes to form and maintain their own bands. The Hometown Boy is in traditional “march style,” utilizing two strains and a “trio” section.

Geographically speaking, Valdres is a district of southern Norway. It is known primarily for its trout fishing. The concert march Valdres, is based off of an ancient Norwegian melody that became the fanfare for the Valdres Battalion. The theme at the “trio” section is based off of a folk tune from the Hardanger region of Norway. Originally performed in 1904, composer Johannes Hanssen sat in the band and played baritone at the work’s premiere.

The community of Decorah, Iowa lies in the Oneota Valley with the Upper Iowa River running through it. American Indians lived there first but immigrant Norwegian farmers were attracted to the rich farmland while the towering bluffs reminded them of fjords back home. Today Decorah is home to farmers and artists. This eclectic blend of residents has fostered a fertile home for music and the arts .

Goober Peas is loosely based off of a traditional folk song originating in the southern United States. It was popular during the Civil War and is still sung in southern states today. “Goober peas” was a slang term for boiled peanuts, which was an emergency ration when supply lines were cut. Robert Jager’s arrangement captures the silliness of the title, weaving in several classical melodies in an often “mushy” way.
