Question 3 Read the leaflet below. Then, answer questions (a) — (j).

REACHING OUT As students, you may sometimes face problems in school, be it with your friends or with your schoolwork. Here are some groups of people that you can turn to for help. PARENTS Parents are the people that are closest to you. So, when you face problems, you should pour your hearts out to your parents. You should tell your parents about what is troubling you. Your parents will be eager to help. They often offer advice, provide support and show their understanding based on their own experiences. SCHOOL COUNSELLORS There are counsellors in every school. Counsellors are trained to help students overcome their fears, anxieties and worries. They are qualified to give professional help to students to deal with personal, social and even problems related to schoolwork. Sometimes they offer students career guidance. To do this, the counsellors help students identify their personalities and attributes so that the students can choose the right career path. VOLUNTEERS IN HELP CENTRES There are many volunteers who work in these help centres. They are trained to talk to troubled students through phone calls. Some students prefer to talk about their problems to someone they do not see face-to-face. One help centre that offers this service is Befrienders. PEER FACILITATORS In school, there are peer facilitators who assist the counsellors. These peer facilitators are selected by students themselves, and they are interested to help other students. They are given training on how to be a good listener. Some students find it easier to talk to someone of their age group. They think that peers understand them better than adults especially when it comes to issues such as peer pressure, schoolwork and the challenges of being a teenager today.

SECTION C (20 marks) (Time suggested: 20 minutes) Question 4 Read the article about weather phenomenon. El Nino is a peculiar weather phenomenon that causes hot and dry spells. It has triggered forest fires in many countries including Indonesia, Australia and South America. The reverse of El Nino is called La Nina. This weather phenomenon brings on an uprush of cold water from the Pacific Ocean and a colder temperature. It brings heavy rains and floods, too. Countries including Malaysia, are preparing themselves for the flood expected in November until mid-January that occurs almost every year. Those living near coastal areas are at risk. There are boats and helicopters ready to evacuate people to evacuation centres on higher grounds. Have you ever wondered about the long term effects that climate changes have on the environment? The burning forests and peat fires in Southeast Asia produce thick smoke. The smoke may affect an estimated 300 million people in Southeast Asia. Not only will their health be affected by the smoke, but also their economy. The haze keeps many foreign tourists from visiting this region. The El Nino phenomenon had also affected other countries around the world. In South America, a little country called Guyana, has no rain for 6 months due to El Nino. This caused their main crop, cassava (of the tapioca family), to be inedible. The roots were small, dry and useless. Peanuts were just shells with nothing inside. Read the article carefully and answer questions (a) – (i).
