TO: Bob Hughes, President FROM: Jesse Trushenski, Fish Culture Section DATE: June 30, 2014 I. Motion Report None . II. Activity Report (A) Summary of Outcomes and Accomplishments Organized by Focus Area in Strategic Plan. Goal 1: Global Fisheries Leadership Objective 1.1: The “Hatcheries and Management of Aquatic Resources (HaMAR)” ad-hoc committee is nearing completion of its duties. A guidance document, “Hatcheries and Management of Aquatic Resources (HaMAR), Considerations for Use of Hatcheries and Hatchery-origin Fish” was prepared and submitted to the Governing Board for approval. The HaMAR-themed special issue in NAJA is progressing, and manuscripts are being submitted for consideration. For more information, see the HaMAR Committee Report Objective 1.1, Strategy 1: The FCS has been involved in the organization of numerous special sessions/symposia to enhance the educational experience of individuals attending fisheries and aquaculture conferences. The Program Committee has arranged a symposium entitled “Engaging the Right Partners: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Propagation to Support Conservation and Management” for the 2014 AFS Annual Meeting in Quebec City, Canada. Current Programming Committee: Carl Kittel (chair), Angela Baran, Steve Lochman, Bruce Barton, Aaron Barkoh, Gerald Kurten Objective 1.1, Strategy 2: The following email was sent by the FCS President to the primary authors of manuscripts published in the 2014 issues of the North American Journal of Aquaculture (NAJA): “Good morning, everyone. Just a brief note to congratulate you on your recent publication(s) in the North American Journal of Aquaculture (NAJA), and to thank you for your contributions to 'our' journal. NAJA is one of the most widely recognized venues for timely, valuable information about fish culture, and, because of contributions like yours, it is growing stronger every year. Once again, congratulations and thanks for supporting NAJA and the Fish Culture Section of the American Fisheries Society.” Objective 1.2, Strategy 7: In February 2014, the WGADCB released a new edition of the “Guide to Using Drugs, Biologics, and Other Chemicals in Aquaculture”. The Guide was revised to reflect recent approvals for Aquaflor (florfenicol). Revisions are currently underway to incorporate information regarding the recent approval of Halamid (chloramine-T). For the past year, the fisheries community has been wrestling with the circumstances currently facing the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Aquatic Animal Drug Approval Partnership Program (AADAP). For 20 years, AADAP has led successful partnership-based efforts to obtain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of new drugs for use in fisheries and aquaculture, but the Program is now at a crossroads, if not perhaps in a real crisis situation. Federal funding for drug approval work has eroded over time, but

the current threat is the recent decision by FWS to reduce funding for the AADAP program in FY 2014 (roughly cutting the program in half) and to terminate the program in FY 2015. Although many have supported the drug approval effort over the years, including the RACs, without the AADAP program to lead these efforts, U.S. aquaculture drug approvals are effectively dead in the water. This includes the AADAP-operated National INAD Program, as the FDA has indicated that their permission for the INAD program depends on significant progress being made to move these drugs through the approval process--without AADAP to generate said "significant progress", the FDA would be forced to terminate the program. Obviously, for the hatcheries and farms that rely on the National INAD Program and the efforts of the AADAP Program in general, this is a serious blow. In Seattle, various stakeholders met for an Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA)-led "Coalition Forum" to discuss this challenge, and members of the WGADCB participated in this discussion. The next meeting of the WGADCB will be held in conjunction with the Aquaculture Drug Approval Coordination Workshop to be held in Bozeman, MT in July 2014. Current WGADCB co-chairs: Mark Gaikowski, Steve Sharon, Jim Brackett, Randy MacMillan, Jim Bowker, Scott LaPatra, Andy Lazur, and Jesse Trushenski Goal 2: Education/Continuing Education Objective 2.1., Strategy 1: As an associate sponsor of the Aquaculture America conference, the FCS helped organize content for the 2014 meeting (Seattle, WA), including a professional development/continuing education workshop, “Aquaculture Statistics Workshop -- Multivariate Statistics”. This workshop is the second statistics workshop co-organized by the FCS and the U.S. Aquaculture Society, and was even better attended than the first one held several years ago. It is believed that this workshop generated revenues in excess of costs (budgets still being finalized). Objective 2.1., Strategy 3: The FCS continues to recognize excellence in student research by offering best abstract travel awards to student members. Applications for Student Travel Awards for the American Fisheries Society Annual Meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas were accepted until July 30th, 2013 and then reviewed by the committee. The committee reviewed a total of 2 applications and awarded both $400. One went to Alichia Sunflower Wilson for her talk entitled “Can Copper Sulfate PreTreatments Induce Resistance to Ammonia Challenge in Channel Catfish” the other went to Shane Ramee for his talk entitled Age/Size Related Changes in Gulf Killifish Salinity Tolerance. Applications for Student Travel Awards for Aquaculture America 2014 held in Seattle were accepted until January 1, 2014 and then reviewed by the committee. The committee reviewed a total of 5 applications and two $250 awards were given. One went to Paula Caldentey for her talk entitled, “Prey capture kinematics of wild and hatchery juvenile common snook”, and the other went to Meghan Manor for her talk entitled, “Effects of feeding level and sexual maturation on PPAR-, mTOR-, and fatty acid-related gene expressionin liver, muscle, and visceral adipose tissue of diploid and triploid female rainbow trout. Ms. Caldentey also won the joint FCS/U.S. Aquaculture Society award ($500 total). Advertisements for the awards were placed in the FCS newsletter, FCS listserv, and FCS website. Advertisements for the travel award to the National AFS meeting in Quebec City will be accepted until July 15, 2014. Current Student Awards Committee: Bradley Ray (co-chair) and Sean Janson (co-chair)

Goal 3: Value of Membership Objective 3.1, Strategy 1: The FCS Secretary/Treasurer (Alan Johnson) has requested that AFS staff provide us with an updated Section membership list every 2 – 3 months. A list of Affiliate members will be maintained by the Secretary/Treasurer. Objective 3.1, Strategy 9: Various new features have been added to the FCS website in the past year, including:  

Moving content on the home page to direct visitors to featured content. Two narrated lectures/videos on the sustainability of aquaculture and disinfection practices for fish transport.

The FCS continues to distribute information to its membership via the FCS listserv, website, and quarterly newsletter. Additionally, our newsletter is distributed to the World Aquaculture Society and U.S. Aquaculture Society Boards of Directors and Executive Committees. For the Winter 2014 issue, Alan Johnson recruited an excellent article, “Art Work at the William Jack Hernandez Sport Fish Hatchery”, from Andrea Tesch and Megan McClaren, describing the beautiful works on display at the recently opened hatchery. Objective 3.1, Strategy 9: Currently, we have close to 400 friends on our Facebook page. We continue to post any info about meetings/conferences, interesting articles/news stories, pics from the Better Know a Hatchery series, and links relevant to aquaculture. Better Know a Hatchery continues to publish new features monthly when possible and have been publishing for over 2 years. We have also been getting condensed versions of past features published in Fisheries and expect more to be published in the near future. We will continue to submit this condensed versions to Fisheries for publication. Recent features have included hatcheries from Maryland, Wyoming, Idaho, and Washington and span the full spectrum of state, national and tribal hatcheries. We published special edition of Better Know a Hatchery called “Why is Aquaculture Important?” that looked back at the answers we received to this question in previous features and online (Facebook, AFS page and FCS page). Current Newsletter Committee: Heidi Lewis (chair), "Matt Wipf, Bonnie Mulligan, John Bowzer Current Website Administrator: Jesse Trushenskir Current Facebook Page Administrator: Brian Gause Current Listserv Administrator: Alan Johnson Objective 3.2, Strategy 1: FCS Student Committee members are currently preparing an article, “RELEVANT TOPICS TO KEEP IN MIND AS A GRADUATE STUDENT”. The article is intended to be something of a “things I know now that I wish I knew then” to aid graduate students in aquaculture and fisheries through the process, and will address topics like establishing a professional network, improving your communication skills, etc. Current Student Committee: Artur Rombenso (Chair), Karma Kissinger, Michael Ciaramella
