The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a multi-district, grassroots leadership development program of member districts organized into regional divisions throughout the world. It is not an official program of Rotary International and is not under its control. The RLI seeks to have Rotary Clubs in member districts identify those Rotarians who seem to have the POTENTIAL for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide those so identified with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills for voluntary organizations. September, 2014 Quote of the Month Editor's Note: Dr. Warren Bennis, considered by many to be the "Father of Leadership", died in August. A professor of business administration and author of about 30 books on leadership, he is someone we ought to study. Here are some of his thoughts as reported by the Boston Globe: "He believed in the adage that great leaders are not born but made; the process of becoming a leader is similar, if not identical, to becoming a fully integrated human being. Odds and Ends about RLI RLI plans to discuss some policies and/or practices in some of our eBulletins. For this issue, we want to discuss the goals of the 3 Foundation related coursesessions in the 3 Parts of the basic RLI Curriculum. RLI's major goal for these sessions is to create enthusiasm and support for The Rotary Foundation. Over the past years we have opened up the world of the Foundation to many thousands of Rotarians and encouraged much International Service by clubs who rarely were engaged in such service. It is not the task of RLI to teach the mechanics of Foundation grants or other technical matters relating to the Foundation. Such mechanics are the province of Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinators and other Foundation officers. Because those officers usually deal primarily with club and district officers and not the average club members, RLI has an important function in bringing the great value of the Foundation to such average members. Not every Rotarian wishes to learn the details of how to process grant applications, etc., but all want to know of the great work that the Foundation does around the world. Such knowledge usually leads to Foundation support by those members. Welcome New Member District District 2590 is now a member of the Japan Division. It is located in the Prefecture of Kanagawa in Central Japan. The District Governor is Seiichi Ono of Yokahama. The district is the 14th member district of the Japan Division that is chaired by PRID Masahiro Kuroda, a member of the Intl. RLI Curriculum Committee. The RLI Intl. Curriculum Committee is scheduled to meet on January 29-February 1, 2015 at the Hilton Garden Inn Airport in Orlando, Florida USA. The Organizing Chair is PDG Randy Rawiszer of Deltona, Florida. Randy also serves as Chair of the RLI Sunshine Division. Details are being determined and a registration flyer will then be posted on the RLI Web site. Every division is entitled to send one or more representatives to the committee meeting through the registration process. The Committee will consider the recommended curriculum for the three year period beginning July 1, 2015 until June 30, 2018. RLI is planning to provide an opportunity for all districts/divisions to make suggestions to the committee through regional committees to be announced. RLI DISCUSSION GROUP ON ROTARY.ORG CONTINUES TO GROW 251 Rotarians have signed on to the RLI Discussion Group on the Rotary International Web Site. A number of discussions have been started and all members are welcome to express their opinions. Especially important is the discussion of possible changes, etc. in the RLI Curriculum prior to the Curriculum Committee meeting in January. The group is on Rotary.org/myrotary/discussion groups. It is very easy to join the group. RLI Divisions Plan Events at Rotary Institutes More and more Rotary Institutes are providing opportunities every year for RLI members to hold breakfasts or other events during Institutes for their zones. Some are also providing opportunities for RLI representatives to participate in plenary sessions or other parts of their programs. Some of those Rotary Institutes this year include Zones 25-26 in Victoria, Canada; European Institute in Berlin, Germany; Zones 1516 Institute in Billund, Denmark; Zones 6B, 7A & 10B Institute in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia; Zone 20 Institute in Marrakech, Morocco; Zones 27 & 21B Institute in Denver, Colorado USA, Zones 7B and 8 in Wellington, New Zealand and many others. Reports of these and additional events will be published in future eBulletins. We thank the conveners of these Institutes for supporting RLI activity at their Institutes. Regional Vice-Chairs: Renee Merchant, North Central USA Anne Matthews, acting, Eastern USA during the recuperation of RVC Eric Adamson Kalcho Hinov is not new, but his region has been revised to Zone 20B. Additional new officers were announced in the last RLI eBulletin. Correction from last issue - Michael Merrill is the Regional ViceChair for California and Hawaii. The revised Division List and Officers List will soon be posted on the RLI Intl. Web site at www.rotaryleadershipinstitute.org Around the Rotary World Plans are Underway for RLI Courses in the Pacific Islands that are part of a Japan RLI District Planning is underway for RLI courses for the Pacific Basin Group of District 2750 in Japan. A Part I Seminar was approved by the District Governor Toshio Sakamoto. Arrangements will be made by Assistant Governor Mary Rhodes of the Tumon Bay Club in Guam Island. This is part of the effort of the Intl. RLI to bring RLI to Rotary areas not easily served geographically. RLI in Australia Publishes "The News Forum" A new newsletter has been published for Australia, New Zealand and Oceania RLI Divisions. Edited by PDG Cathy Roth, RLI Intl. Regional Vice-Chair for ANZO, the newsletter contains much news, photos and information for RLI members in that region. We recommend other divisions/regions looking at this great publication as a possible model for their own newsletters. Although we are fearful of burdening Cathy, you may contact her at [email protected]. The annual financial statement of the International RLI is now posted on the RLI Web site. The annual report for 2013-14 is also posted there.
