Brittas: Sunday: 10.30 am

This year in St. Finian’s, we are looking to involve a large number of people from across the community in our celebration of Holy Week. For Christians, it is the most important celebration of every year, and every baptised member of the Church should be ready to help make the Holy Week celebrations a true reflection of our joy during these great days. Soon, we will be making an appeal, asking for parishioners to step forward to make a difference. Whether by distributing missalettes before Mass, stewarding our procession down the Main Street of Newcastle on Good Friday or taking on the ministry of reading at one of the celebrations, there are many roles to be taken on. No matter what your skills, we can use them. When you hear our appeal to form a liturgy team for Holy Week, please be generous in responding.

Family Offering Envelopes New Boxes Available During the next week, new boxes of Family Offering Envelopes will be made available. This year we hope that every family will receive their box of envelopes personally from a member of the Parish Pastoral Council or a parish volunteer, with a word of thanks for your contributions. This is a good opportunity to remind parishioners where the different collections go: 1. Dublin Diocesan Common Fund The Common Fund is supported by the First Collection at Masses on Sundays and Holydays and also by contributions to the Christmas, Easter and Harvest Dues The Diocesan Common Fund provides the salaries of Dublin priests who are currently in ministry. The Common Fund also provides a substantial grant to the Clerical Fund, which provides income and care for priests who are retired or who are out of ministry long-term due to illness. 2. The Diocesan Share Fund The Diocesan Share Fund is supported by the Second Collection at Masses on Sundays and Holydays. Share helps to fund the diocesan administration and assists parishes with projects which would otherwise be unaffordable to the local community. At certain times, as announced, the proceeds of the Second Collection is given over to diocesan agencies such as Accord or Crosscare, and you may remember that recently the proceeds were given to help alleviate suffering in Syria and the Philippines. 3. The Family Offering Collection The Family Offering collection covers the running expenses of the parish, including: insurance, lighting and heating, telephone, the secretary’s salary, computer and photocopying expenses, missalettes, minor repairs, communion breads, altar wine and many more expenses. Families can contribute to the Family Offering by returning a regular envelope contribution with the envelopes provided, or by standing order. An important point to note is that your contribution to the first and second collection at Masses, which is very important and is returned to the diocese. Please do not neglect the Family Offering Collection, which provides for the running expenses of the parish. Pope Francis Creates 19 New Cardinals On Saturday 22nd February, Pope Francis created 19 new cardinals at a consistory in the Vatican. Here is an extract of the homily Pope Francis gave on this occasion: ‘...I will tell you what the Church needs: she needs you, your cooperation, and even more your communion, with me and among yourselves. The Church needs your courage, to proclaim the Gospel at all times, both in season and out of season, and to bear witness to the truth. The Church needs your prayer for the progress of Christ’s flock, that prayer – let us not forget this! – which, along with the proclamation of the Word, is the primary task of the Bishop. The Church needs your compassion, especially at this time of pain and suffering for so many countries throughout the world. Let us together express our spiritual closeness to the ecclesial communities and to all Christians suffering from discrimination and persecution. We must fight every form of discrimination! The Church needs our prayer for them, that they may be firm in faith and capable of responding to evil with good. And this prayer of ours extends to every man and women suffering injustice on account of their religious convictions. The Church needs us also to be peacemakers, building peace by our words, our hopes and our prayers. Building peace! Being peacemakers! Let us therefore invoke peace and reconciliation for those peoples presently experiencing violence, exclusion and war…’
