Liturgy Team Newcastle Holy Week This year in St. Finian’s, we are looking to involve a large number of people from across the community in our celebration of Holy Week. For Christians, it is the most important celebration of every year, and every baptised member of the Church should be ready to help make the Holy Week celebrations a true reflection of our joy during these great days. Soon, we will be making an appeal, asking for parishioners to step forward to make a difference. Whether by distributing missalettes before Mass, stewarding our procession down the Main Street of Newcastle on Good Friday or taking on the ministry of reading at one of the celebrations, there are many roles to be taken on. No matter what your skills, we can use them. When you hear our appeal to form a liturgy team for Holy Week, please be generous in responding.

Cura Crisis Pregnancy Support An unplanned pregnancy or a crisis during a pregnancy at any age may be a time of anxiety and stress with many conflicting feelings, emotions and practicalities to consider. Counselling can support you in making decisions about your pregnancy; the decision that is best for you. Cura counsellors can give you time, someone to listen, a safe place to be while you have that time to think without pressure or judgement. Cura also provides counselling and support after an abortion.

During the next week, new boxes of Family Offering Envelopes will be made available. This year we hope that every family will receive their box of envelopes personally from a member of the Parish Pastoral Council or a parish volunteer, with a word of thanks for your contributions. This is a good opportunity to remind parishioners where the different collections go: 1. Dublin Diocesan Common Fund The Common Fund is supported by the First Collection at Masses on Sundays and Holydays and also by contributions to the Christmas, Easter and Harvest Dues The Diocesan Common Fund provides the salaries of Dublin priests who are currently in ministry. The Common Fund also provides a substantial grant to the Clerical Fund, which provides income and care for priests who are retired or who are out of ministry long-term due to illness. 2. The Diocesan Share Fund The Diocesan Share Fund is supported by the Second Collection at Masses on Sundays and Holydays. Share helps to fund the diocesan administration and assists parishes with projects which would otherwise be unaffordable. At certain times, as announced, the proceeds of the Second Collection is given over to diocesan agencies such as Accord or Crosscare, and you may remember that recently the proceeds were given to help people in Syria and the Philippines. 3. The Family Offering Collection The Family Offering collection covers the running expenses of the parish, including: insurance, lighting and heating, telephone, the secretary’s salary, computer and photocopying expenses, missalettes, minor repairs, communion breads, altar wine and many more expenses. Families can contribute to the Family Offering by returning a regular envelope contribution with the envelopes provided, or by standing order. An important point to note is that your contribution to the first and second collection at Masses, which is very important and is returned to the diocese. Please do not neglect the Family Offering Collection, which provides for the running expenses of the parish. Trinity College Research, Participants Required

Researchers at Trinity College Dublin are currently recruiting participants for a study looking at how sharing meals can be good for our mental and physical health. We are looking for 100 adults aged over 60 who are living alone, and who would like to receive a visitor once weekly for 8 weeks during 2014. Your visitor will be fully trained, and Garda-vetted, and aged over 55. Your visitor will bring ingredients for a meal that you will both prepare and enjoy together. We are also looking to recruit individuals aged 55+ who would be interested in undergoing our training and delivering the program. We will cover the costs of the meal, so there is no cost associated with participating! If you are interested in finding out more, please email [email protected] or call 01 896 8414. From the Homily of Archbishop Martin for World Day of the Sick How do we show the light that is generated by our faith? We find some indications in the first reading: The prophet Isaiah tells us that we must: “share your bread with the hungry and shelter the homeless poor”; we must “clothe the man you see to be naked”. As followers of Jesus Christ we are called to share. This means that our interaction with the poor and the hungry and the sick cannot be just by email, from a safe distance. It requires a real encounter between us and the one who is sick or poor so that together we encounter healing and restoration. I congratulate all of you here today for the witness that you give to sharing, to being alongside individual men and women who are less fortunate in many ways. I thank the carers for the love you show daily and indeed hourly, by day and by night. I thank the sick for what you bring to us: from you we learn about faith, about prayer, about the ability to recognise our dependence on God.
