General Items G-1. Qualification: All scouts participating in the 2012 Three Rivers District Pinewood Derby must be registered as a Cub Scout on the day of the race. (i.e. Webelos II scouts must not have registered with a Troop) G-2 Competitor Categories: For the Three Rivers District Championship there are no separate categories by “Cub Scout Year”. Each Pack from the Three Rivers District is allowed to send their top 3 finishers regardless of classification or Cub Rank Level. All Cubs will compete in a single classification to decide the district Pinewood Derby Champion. G-3. Attendance: Only the Cub Scout may enter his car into the Derby. This means that the Cub Scout must be present to enter his car into the competition. G-4. “New Work”: No “New Work” or newly constructed cars are allowed. That means that each participant is required to enter the same car they used for their Pack Pinewood Derby races. No one is allowed to build a new car for the District Championship G-5. Single Entry: Each Cub Scout will be allowed to enter only one car into the District Pinewood Derby Championship. Qualification Each Pack may enter up to three scouts from their unit. These three should be the top finishers regardless of Cub Scout level. If one of the top three finishers is not able to attend the District Derby the Pack may substitute the next highest finishing scout, but no more than a total of three Cub Scouts from a Pack.

Technical Standards T-1. Material: Race cars shall be constructed from the parts contained in the Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit (referred to below as the kit) as sold by the Scout Service Center, 660 32nd Ave SW Cedar Rapids, IA. Materials from the kit may be supplemented but not replaced. T-2 Weight: Race cars may weigh no more than five (5) ounces (total weight) as determined on the official scales during race day inspection. T-3 Wheels and Axles: The car shall roll on the wheels from the kit. The wheels shall turn bout the axle nails from the kit. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood of the car body and MUST be placed in the original ‘axle grooves’ in the supplied wooden block. The outside surface of the axle head (the non-contact surface) may not be changed substantially, such as, by polishing. It must be obvious to the judges that the grooves, wheels and the nails from the kit are being used. T-4 Size: Race cars may be no longer than 7 inches, nor wider than 2 ¾ (2.75) inches, nor taller than 3 inches, as determined by the official gages during race day inspection. Underside clearance of at least 3/8 (0.375) inches and inside wheel to wheel clearance of at least 1 ¾ (1.75) inches is recommended, so that the car will run on all racetracks. Adequate clearance is the responsibility of the race car builder. T-5. Weights and Attachment: Weight may be added to the car and will be considered part of the car for purposes of all measurements. “Weight” is considered to be any material on the car that is nor provided in the kit. All weight must be securely fastened to the car, e.g. by permanent glue, nails or screws, but not by “sticky substances”, e.g. tape, or tack spray. Weights shall be passive, i.e. nonmoveable, non-magnetic, non-electric, non-sticky, etc. T-6. Wheels: Wheel treatment (hub and tread smoothing and polishing) may not result in substantial removal of mass nor in reducing the tread (track contact) width from the original kit wheels. Wheel tread surface must be cylindrical. The words “Official B.S.A Made in the U.S.A.” and other lettering on the wheels shall remain intact and clearly visible to the inspector. It must be apparent to the inspector that at least some of the original “tread marks” on the wheel face has been left intact. T-7. Unacceptable Construction: The following may NOT be used in conjunction with the wheels or axles: hubcaps, washers, inserts, sleeves, bearings. T-8. Gravity Powered: The race car may not be constructed or treated in such a way that the track’s starting mechanism imparts momentum to the car. (For instance, this provision disqualifies cars with sticky substances on the front of the car and protrusions which may catch on the starting pin or extend around/past the starting bar.) T-9. Lubricants: Only dry lubricants such as graphite or powdered teflon "white lube" will be allowed for lubricating the wheels. Lubricants may not foul the track. Lubricants must be applied before final inspection. T-10. Staging: The entire car must stage behind the starting pin. T-11 Body: The car body may have no moving parts.

Conduct of the Races Track officials are responsible for the proper conduct of the races. Decisions of track officials on questions of rules interpretations and procedure may be appeals to the event chairman. Decisions of track officials on questions of fact may not be appealed beyond the track chairman. Scouts AND PARENTS should also be familiar with these rules. C-1. Inspection Gages: All inspection will be conducted by one team at a special inspection area using scales and gages approved by the Chairman. Please stress this fact to all members of your pack. They should be prepared to make adjustments to their cars if necessary. C-2. Impounding: Once the car has passed inspection and received its number sticker, an official from the judging team will take the car and place it on the staging table. No further lubricating or other car improvements will be allowed until all racing is completed. C-3. Car Handling Responsibility: All race staging, heat set up, and car movements from the staging area onto, and off of the race track will only be conducted by derby official judge team members. C-4. Lane Assignments: All lane assignments for all race heats are established by the racing software: Derby Magic C-5 Car Repair: If, during the race, a wheel falls off or the car becomes otherwise damaged, then the SCOUT will be asked to come to the “Pit Area” and to the best of his ability perform the repairs. The SCOUT may seek advice concerning the repairs, but must perform the actual repairs without assistance. If a car is damaged due to track fault or due to fault of another car or SCOUT, then the track chairman, at his sole discretion, may allow additional repair assistance. C-6 Car Interference: If, during a race heat, a car leaves its lane and, in so doing, interferes with another racer, then the car at fault shall be declared to have lost the race heat. (However, see C-9) C-7. Car Leaves Lane: If, during a race heat, a car leaves its lane but proceeds down the track in a manner that does not interfere with any opponent’s cars or finish line indicators and timing mechanisms, then the race will be called normally. (However, see C-9.) C-8. Car Leaves Track: If, during a race heat, a car leaves the track without interfering with its opponents, it shall be considered to have ended its heat at that point. (However, see C-9.) C-9. Track Fault: If a car leaves its lane, at his sole discretion, the track chairman may inspect the track and, if a track fault is found which probably caused the initial violation, the track chairman may order the race heat to be rerun after the track is repaired. C-10. No Finishers: If, during a race heat, no car reaches the finish line on the track, the car which went the farthest in its lane shall be declared as the heat winner. C-11. Call to Race: Cars will be called to race by pre-assigned numbers, without regards to owner. Placement in the line is based on the assigned track lane from the Derby Magic software. C-12. Appeals: The Cub Scout must make all questions of rules interpretations, procedure, and fact to the track officials promptly.

C-13. District Champion: The Three Rivers District Champion will be decided based on a compilation of timed heats of all cars entered into the Three Rivers District Derby on the day of the event, which will provide four finalists. (No outside times or additional cars will be considered) The District Championship will be based on the winner of the final heat to include the four top time finishers from the race heats. The final heat will consist of each car running in each lane against and the best time for each car being used to determine final ranking. C-15. Judging: All results from the Derby Magic software will be considered to be accurate and correct. (All appeals must be submitted timely and to proper race officials). The Racing Environment R-1. Track Length and Drop: The track shall have a racing surface (starting line to finish line distance) of approximately 38 feet with a drop of approximately 4 feet. R-2. Track Slope: The track slope shall decrease from approximately 30 degrees at the starting line to approximately 0 degrees the first 8 feet of track. The last 30 feet of track to the finish line shall be as flat as allowed by the gym floor surface. R-3. Lanes: The track will have four lanes. Each lane will consist of a straight, smooth plastic open section. Each lane is separated by a raised barrier to keep individual cars in their respective lanes. R-4 Starting Mechanism: The “starting line” shall consist of vertical pins of approximately ¼ inch diameter, extending approximately 2 inches above the track surface and approximately centered in each lane. The starting line is electronically operated by the Derby Magic racing software for the most accurate race results. R-5. Finish Line Sensor Location: The “finish line sensors” shall be in alignment with the corresponding starting line pin and be approximately centered in its lane. R-6. Finish Line Judging: Three (3) impartial finish line judges, including the track chairman, shall be at station if the electronic tracking of any heat is in question, but only as back up to the electronic sensors. The electronic sensor indicators is considered accurate, and human officials can only over rule the electronic sensors in cases of blatant electronic error. R-8. Lane Selection: All lane selection will be determined by the Derby Magic software in which each car will run one (1) time on each lane for a minimum of four (4) heats for each derby car. R-9. Competition Format: Format will be multiple heat time total elimination. Every car will get an equal number of track runs. The four cars with the fastest overall times, total from all heats, will be selected for the final Championship heat.
