The Portrait—Part 42 John 15:1-11

June 16/17, 2012

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 15:1 Jesus' arrival displaces Israel as the focus of God’s plan of revealing Himself to the entire world. The Father prunes branches by removing anything that can ultimately sap our future productivity and obstruct us from producing. The choice that faces every person is clear. To abide in Christ as a genuine disciple will produce righteous behavior and result in eternal joy and blessing. But those whose profession of faith is false, like Judas, will be fruitless and ultimately cast into eternal torment in hell. 15:2 Jesus is not speaking of a branch which never bore fruit, but of one that is no longer “bearing fruit.” 15:2 This purging is not to fit the believer for Heaven (that was accomplished the moment you received the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ), but is designed to make us more fruitful while in this world. 15:4 The greatest action God could bring against a believer would be to let him alone, let him have his own way. Because God loves us, He “prunes” us and encourages us to bear more fruit for His glory. 15:4 Your part is to remain. What does that mean? 1. To accept Jesus as Savior (cf. 6:54, 56). One must first be “in him” before he can “abide in him.” 2. To continue or to persevere in believing (8:31 [“hold” is remain]; 1 John 2:19, 24) 3. Also means believing, loving obedience (John 15:9-10) 15:5 Christ-like traits mark those through whom His life flows. 15:6 Either your life is, as the result of continuous fellowship with Christ, bringing forth fruit to the glory of the Father, fruit which will remain; or, because of neglect of communion with Him, we are in enormous danger of being set aside as His witnesses on earth. 15:7 The promise of answered prayer comes only to those whose lives are controlled by the commands of God’s Word (Psalm 37:4). The ultimate blessing of obedience is full and complete joy. The Lord promised that His own joy will permeate and control the lives of those who walk with Him.

15:9 There can be no fruit for the Father, no abiding in Christ’s love, unless there is real subjection of will. It is only in the path of obedience that He will have fellowship with us. 15:10 The one who disregards God’s commandments is not walking as Christ walked; instead, he is walking as the world walks. 15:11 The measure in which we enter into joy is determined by our daily communion with the Lord. We are not producing fruit to please ourselves but to serve others. We should be the kind of people who “feed” others by our words and our works (Proverbs 10:21).

GREEK WORDS Airō (ah'ee-ro)--to lift; by implication to take up or away :- bear (up), loose, remove, take (away, up) Chōris (kho-rece)--separate :- beside, by itself, without Rhēma--refers to the individual utterances of Christ

BEARING FRUIT INVOLVES

  

Staying in the Word of God Confession of sin so that nothing hinders our walk Obeying Him

HOW CAN WE TELL WHEN WE ARE “ABIDING IN CHRIST”? When you are abiding, you produce fruit Experience the Father’s “pruning” so you’ll bear more fruit A believer abiding in Christ has his prayers answered Experiences a deepening love for Christ and other believers He also experiences joy (John 15:11) IT IS NOT AUTOMATIC Abiding must be cultivated - demands worship, meditation on God’s Word, prayer, sacrifice, service – Results in JOY!!!
