Power of friendship can prevent tragedy By DANIEL JENKINS Sometimes the unthinkable happens. The loss of Junior Seau was a huge shock to San Diegans and fans around the world. After 13 seasons as a star linebacker for the San Diego Chargers, the charismatic Seau always will be considered a favorite son of America’s finest city. No other Charger will ever wear the number 55 on his jersey. On Friday, May 11, thousands of fans, friends, and “We don’t know family poured what was going into Qualcomm Stadium to through Junior celebrate and Seau’s mind before remember the life of Junior he took his life.” Seau. Pastor Miles McPherson, senior pastor at The Rock Church San Diego and former San Diego Charger, introduced a variety of speakers ranging from Mayor Jerry Sanders to former Charger Ladainian Tomlinson. Many wonderful stories were recalled during the celebration, along with video clips depicting amazing athletic accomplishments and charitable contributions throughout Junior’s life. Possibly the most poignant statement of the evening came from former Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts. “There’s no hiding that Junior’s passing is a tragedy,” he said. “The lesson is: If you need help, get help. It’s out there. All you have to do is swallow your pride and ask for it. We all need help at times. If you need help or Please turn to page 16

Healing center offers oasis of prayer and solitude By RICK MONROE Located in a rural, unincorporated area in northeast Vista, the Christian Healing Center is nestled in a mix of open space, older residential homes and fancy family estates. The property, once home of the Mustard Tree Community, has many of the same qualities as us: beauty, roughness, potential and some areas that may be dark or need some repair. And while improvements have been made and are continuing to be made to the property, the focus has been on healing the mind, body and soul of people looking for healing — with the simple

motto of “To listen, love and pray.” It’s been called “The Oasis” by some, but others say it’s a refuge or a Kingdom outpost. “It’s a place of quiet in the midst of a busy world, like an outpost, where kingdom activity can occur: prayer and healing,” said Pastor Tim Laundrié, new director of the center. “It’s a place where God’s kingdom is coming near. For people who are stressed out, it’s a place where you can go for relief – like the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus went to connect directly with God.” He sees the The Oasis as a safe place, Please turn to page 6

Do you feel God has given you the gift of encouragement? The Scripture says in Romans 12:8, “…if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.” If this verse speaks to your heart, then you’ll want to know about “The A-Team.” Every Sunday evening at the Corner Café in Vista, The A-Team meets to share worship — live via Skype — with missionaries and natives of numerous far-away countries.

The new, innovative way of communicating with missionaries is exciting to North County’s local Christians and encouraging to the overseas missionaries and to the locals of that town God has gathered. Most American missionaries have a laptop computer, so connecting via Skype isn’t difficult, except in some areas of Africa. “We select worship music, then learn it in the native tongue where the missionary is living ,” explained Jim Codde, founder of the ministry. “It was wonderful when we recently had a Skype gathering and sang in the missionary group’s native tongue Please turn to page 14

Looking for more wisdom? Just try asking God

isdom is one of the most valuable possessions you will ever acquire during your adventure on earth. “Wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.” (Proverbs 8:11) “Whoever listens to me [wisdom] will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” (Proverbs 1:33) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom…” (Psalm 111:10). This month we are reminded of the need for wisdom, as young couples marry, as relieved graduates celebrate commencement, and as we applaud dads for hopefully being the dispensers of much needed wisdom. I have the good fortune of being married to one of the wisest men in the world. Yes, I am biased, but Bill is wise. It was Bill’s

practical wisdom that has laid the foundation for our 10 Best Decisions series: for couples, parents, men, women, and the newest, 10 Best Decisions for Graduates. Here, let me share an excerpt from Bill’s book, 10 Best Decisions a Man Can Make, which shares the source of wisdom, and how to start accumulating a little wisdom for your life: Since there is a beginning of wisdom, there must a progression in wisdom. We can, therefore, grow in wisdom, insight and understanding about life. So, how do you set a plan to cause growth in your level of wisdom? You build wisdom by asking questions. The more you learn about life the more you realize you don’t know very much, which creates a need to learn more. One of the signs of maturity, therefore, is

a commitment to ask questions. The Question of Provision. “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5) The context of this directive confirms that those who seek to do God’s will will experience various trials along the path. These are the difficulties of the athlete who feels pain, experiences setbacks and strains his body as he seeks victory. Those who sit in the stands have many opinions about the game, but they are excused from the travails that go along with being a competitor. James was writing to people who had given their hearts to Jesus. They had been born again through a vital encounter with the Holy Spirit and they had discovered the gospel of Christ, Who had forgiven their

RED HOT MONOGAMY BILL & PAM FARREL sins, given them eternal life and delivered them from judgment. Logically it would follow that God’s blessing would be upon their lives. Instead, they were dispersed around the Roman Empire. Many of them were exiled from their homes, many of them had lost their careers, and some had lost loved ones because of their faith. They were surprised because life was harder than ever. Logical questions people would ask at this point is, “Why is this happening? Why now? Why is his life getting better while mine is getting worse? Why do I have to suffer after meeting my Savior?” Why questions are easy to ask, because life can be confusing from our limited perspectives. James’ advice is, “Whenever you want to ask, ‘Why?’ ask for wisdom.” Whenever you ask God for wisdom, you can do so with great confidence because he gives it “generously to all without finding fault.” He wants us to succeed and is, thereby, willing to give all the wisdom you need and a little extra to cause growth. God never reacts in anger, disappointment, or frustration when we ask for wisdom. He simply says, “Yes,” and then gives you all you can handle. The Question of Procedure. Wisdom is the ability to know how. When you are wise, you know how to apply truth to specific situations. When you are wise, you know how to handle conversations so that people leave the discussion with clear directions and elevated motivation. When you are wise, you know how to navigate through a project so that it gets done on schedule and on budget. Wisdom, therefore, consistently asks, “How? How do I get this done? How should I approach this? How do I apply biblical principles to this situation?” So, if you lack wisdom for your future, your marriage, a dating relationship, your family or work — ask God. He wants to give it liberally, like the thick frosting that will be on top of June’s wedding cakes, Please turn to page 4

“A wise man will hear and increase in learning. And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.” – Proverbs 1:5 (NAS)

Why should we wash feet? By RHONDA K. STUBBLES One of my fondest memories, believe it or not, was when I was a child in a little Baptist church in Concord. Once a month we would have communion and a feet-washing service. As a kid, you get a little freaked out washing someone else’s feet. I remember the ladies would go into the basement and the men would go into another room down the hall.

GUEST COMMENTARY At the time, I didn’t understand why we weren’t all in the same room, but I learned over the years that God speaks to men differently in these services than he does to a woman. Still today, I can close my eyes and hear the beautiful sound of the men singing echoing down the hallways

It’s time to start reaching across the cultural divide By ROBERT ALAN WARD No thinking person in America today is unaware of the great cultural divide between those of us who believe in the God of the Bible and those who believe that we are chance collisions of molecules in a purposeless universe. Those of us who believe the former believe in absolute truth. We believe that a loving, holy, all-powerful God created us. Our fall in the Garden of Eden brought sin and death into the world. God sent His Son to take our sins upon Himself that we might be forgiven and inherit eternal life. Christ rose from the dead on the third day, thus gaining victory over sin and death for all eternity. Such an understanding of truth and the world around us has a profound effect on how we live. We have a keen awareness of right and wrong, as outlined to us in the Bible.

GUEST COMMENTARY Those who believe that we are biological accidents see this world as their only existence. Since there is no God in their minds, right and wrong is re-defined as that which brings pleasure or that which causes pain. To the biblically trained mind sin is evil. To the worldly trained mind suffering is evil. Two such diametrically opposed world views must inevitably clash in every area of life, including religion, politics, marriage, law, finances, science, education, business, the environment, reproduction, recreation,

and in how we relate to one another. We must understand that, as we see much of what they do as evil, so too do they see us as evil. When we speak of judgment to come, they see us as inflicting unwarranted guilt (pain) upon them. They see us as blocking what otherwise could be an earthly utopian existence. As darkness and light cannot co-exist, so these world views never can reconcile, any more than there ever can be reconciliation or compromise between God and Satan. But does that end discussion between ourselves and those on the other side? Do we write them off as hopeless, contenting ourselves with shouting zingers across the divide as they shout back at us? If that’s all we do, we’d better read our Bibles a little more closely. I often ask Christians which word is the more important to our faith — love or truth. Some say love. Some say truth. In fact, both are attributes of the God whom we serve. When we favor one attribute over the other we live and present a warped message. On the one hand we must stand uncompromisingly upon the immutable principles of God. Marriage, as ordained by God in the Garden of Eden, always has been between one man and one woman. Sexual relations of any kind outside of marriage are — and always have been — wrong. Murder, including the taking of innocent human life in the womb is — and always has been — wrong. It is right to work. It is wrong to steal. But while standing uncompromisingly

upon God’s truths, we must love those who believe and practice otherwise. We are told in the Scriptures “to malign no one, to be uncontentious, gentle, showing every consideration for all men.” Why? Because “we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another.” (Titus 3:2-4) We were all once where they are. Whenever I dialogue with people on the other side, I try to be polite and respectful. Shouting our beliefs at them won’t make them any more true. I try to let them speak first and genuinely listen to their thoughts. “Tell me why you believe as you do? How will your beliefs make this a better world?” When we practice simple respect, those with whom we are speaking usually respond in kind. By listening first we often win the right to be heard. At all times we humbly endeavor to live the Christian life before them, looking for ways to do them kind deeds. Can love do any less? Now I know it’s hard to stay under control sometimes. We believe what we believe passionately, as do many on the other side. We dislike hearing our Savior’s name profaned. We dislike having our intelligence or character impugned. I have failed at what I am writing here many times. But God forgives us. We confess our failures to Him and then pray for the love, wisdom, and strength to do better. The goal is not to win an argument, but a soul. While there never can be reconciliation between the two belief systems, there can be reconciliation with individuals whom we love out of the darkness. o Robert Alan Ward is a playwright with 13 published titles to his credit. He is married, with four children and 11 grandchildren. He lives in Escondido and attends Cross Connection.

from the other room, and then the women would begin to sing, “Oh, how I love Jesus; Oh, how I love Jesus because He first loved me.” Wow, it still touches me in my soul, heart and mind. I often wondered if that is what heaven sounds like when the angels sing. I remember placing the towel around my waist and that I would tighten it, placing the extra over my shoulder. It was one of the largest towels I had ever seen! It wrapped around me three to four times. As I would move the water basin right in front of the person I was washing, I would hug her and begin washing, one hand holding her foot, the other hand dipping into the warm water. Over the top of the foot, then I would dry it with the towel. I remember their feet were all so different. My mind goes in so many directions, but what was God teaching us through all this? Nothing was ever said about how someone’s feet smelled or how they looked. It was just the most awesome moment of my life. I felt so humbled, yet broken, and thankful all at the same time. I can only imagine how the disciples felt having their feet washed by Jesus. Then reading John 13, I realized that God was teaching his disciples holiness, not hygiene. I have to tell you, I can still see some of these ladies when I close my eyes. Great women of God — teachers, mentors, I miss them all. Most of them have gone on to be with the Lord, but they still hold a very special place in my heart today. At times I can still hear them all singing. You see, it is more than just being obedient to what God has taught us in John 13. It was also a time of bonding as sisters and brothers in Christ and learning what true holiness was. I am so grateful for my church family and thankful for the fond memories still in my heart today. So, back to the question of why we should wash feet. I learned the following: • To humble myself before God. • To humble myself before man. • To always be grateful even in the small things. • To love special people in my life. • To respect my elders. • To follow God’s Word. • To value my family. I’m sure there are more reasons. Holiness really affects a lot of areas of our lives, so if you’re still not sure why to wash the feet of others, go back and look at the list again and consider the lifetime benefits. My brother says that we were fortunate to experience firsthand the value of serving others at a young age, and to have parents that loved us enough to teach us the concepts of holiness. o Rhonda Skinner lives in San Diego and works for Morris Cerullo World Evangelism as the mail service and warehouse division director.

Obama campaign embraces gay ‘marriage’ By MICHAEL FOUST President Obama’s re-election campaign has fully embraced his public support of gay “marriage” and seems poised to make it a general election issue — even to the point of ridiculing Mitt Romney’s backing of traditional marriage. Hours after Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to declare public support for the issue, his campaign sent out an e-mail to supporters with the subject line “Marriage.” “I believe that same-sex couples should be allowed to marry,” Obama said in the e-mail. “What I’ve come to realize is that for loving, same-sex couples, the denial of marriage equality means that, in their eyes and the eyes of their children, they are still considered less than full citizens.” The e-mail concluded, “If you agree, you can stand up with me here” — and a link to donate money was provided. The Democratic National Committee also sent out an e-mail from chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, embracing the issue. “Folks, this is what Democrats are all about — and I’m so proud we have a president who’s willing to stand up and say it,” she wrote. “Let’s join him. Show your support for marriage equality today.” The issue of gay “marriage” was the

dominant theme May 10 at BarackObama. com — Obama’s campaign website — where visitors encountered a large picture of Obama with the words, “same-sex couples should be able to get married.” The campaign also sent out multiple Tweets and Facebook messages spreading the president’s position. But perhaps the biggest embrace of the issue came in an Internet video where the campaign re-played Obama’s statement and Romney’s previous statements, and even twisted President Bush’s words on civil unions — all in about 90 seconds. The Obama re-election video ends with a clip of GOP presumptive nominee Romney at a Republican debate. Romney says, “Calling it marriage creates a whole host of problems for families, for the law, for the practice of religion, for education. Let me say this, 3,000 years of human history shouldn’t be discarded so quickly.” The video then ends with words on the screen: “President Obama is Moving us Forward.” The implication: Romney is backwards. In fact, that’s the name the campaign gave the video: “Mitt Romney: Backwards on Equality.” Ironically, Romney’s statement received significant applause at the debate and agreement among social conservatives. His “religion” comment was referenc-

Parents speak out to keep ‘God’ in students’ song Fourth graders at Stall Brook Elementary School were permitted to perform “God Bless the USA” at their public school assembly last month, because people in Bellingham, Mass., and around the country stood for common sense and the children’s First Amendment rights. Originally, teachers replaced the phrase “God Bless the USA” with “We Love the USA,” in the song written by Lee Greenwood. After parents strongly voiced their disapproval, the school pulled the song from the itinerary altogether, but that did not sit well with the parents in Bellingham. People from around the country joined together to preserve our nation’s heritage, which this song embraces, and the school administrators put the song back into the agenda. “This event should embolden people around the country to stand against religious intolerance, whether it is in the classroom or the workplace,” said Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel. “Intimidated by the American Civil Liberties Union or Freedom From Religion Foundation, the public square is becoming a haven for religious bigotry,” Staver said. “As a nation, we are long overdue in demanding that our fundamental liberties be fully honored and protected,” he continued. “These parents refused to be pushed around, and their children’s religious rights were protected.” Liberty Counsel is a nonprofit litigation, education, and policy organization, providing pro bono legal assistance in the areas of religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, and the family.

ing court-ordered gay “marriage” in his home state of Massachusetts, when Boston Catholic Charities decided to shut down its widely praised adoption and foster care work rather than be forced to follow a state law requiring that children be placed in the homes of homosexual couples. He apparently also was referencing the fact that some Massachusetts public schools had read books about gay “marriage” to elementary-age children. The fast-paced video criticizes Romney’s support for a federal marriage amendment. It also blasts his opposition to civil unions. It shows him saying, “I don’t favor civil unions if they’re identical to marriage other than by name.” The video claims: “Even President Bush supported civil unions.” It then shows a clip of the former president saying, “I don’t think we should deny people rights to a civil union.” Bush, though, did not favor civil unions. The quote at issue is from 2004, when during an interview Bush said he did not believe a federal marriage amendment — endorsed by the GOP platform — should prohibit states from legalizing civil unions. Bush’s full quote was, “I don’t think we should deny people rights to a civil union, a legal arrangement, if that’s what a state chooses to do so.” His spokespersons at the time said he did not favor such a law. Obama’s stance makes it likely that the Democratic platform will also endorse gay

“marriage” — which would be a political first for either party. Dwight McKissic, an African American and pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, said Obama’s announcement negatively impacted minority churches. “President Obama has betrayed the Bible and the black church with his endorsement of same-sex marriage,” McKissic said in a statement. “The Bible is crystal clear on this subject, and the black church strongly opposes same-sex marriage. His endorsement is an inadvertent attack on the Christian faith.” McKissic added, “This means that parents are now going to have an extremely difficult time teaching their children that marriage biblically and traditionally is between a man and a woman, when the president that many love and admire is now on record endorsing sodomy. This is painful and shameful. The black church should galvanize, mobilize and address this matter with the same (if not greater) intensity, velocity and resolve as we did the Civil Rights Movement. If we don’t, our children and grandchildren will pay a far greater price in suffering from a governmental sanction of same-sex marriage than we would have under segregation.” ❏ Michael Foust is associate editor of Baptist Press.

Dobson filming delayed until late June Dr. James Dobson’s “Building a Family Legacy” conference, originally set for two weekends in May at Skyline Church in La Mesa, has been rescheduled for the same location on June 22-23 and June 29-30. At the “Building a Family Legacy” conference, Dobson will update and expand his legendary 1978 film series on parenting, seen at the time by 80 million people, then more than a third of the U.S. population. The head of Family Talk radio and known for bestsellers such as The Strong-Willed Child, Dare to Discipline and Bringing Up Boys, Dobson will speak on four evenings, updating his world-renowned parenting series with new research and insights, new stories — fresh encouragement for partnering and parenting in the 21st century. “My son Ryan, at the time a new dad, picked up a video and watched it one night,” Dobson said, describing the genesis of the new series. “He phoned me, and, after a few laughs about the sideburns and big eyeglasses, he said, ‘Dad, this is what parents are wanting right now!’” Ryan’s plea was far from the first, and the Dobson team with producer David Nixon began to consider which segments to retain and what to update and add. In 1978, segments about dealing with young children, for example, the child psychologist speaks from the front lines of raising Ryan and Danae, at the time young children in the Dobson household (she inspired The Strong-Willed Child!). That one-of-a-kind footage will be restored and reframed. “John Wickham, then Army chief of staff, was so taken with the fathering film, he made it required viewing for soldiers around the world,” Dobson recalled.

In the new Legacy session, one of five new titles to be presented at the San Diego conference, Dobson traces four generations in his family to examine the enduring influence of a godly great-grandfather. Every talk will have new research, information and illustrations from the premier expert on child development and family counsel. Author of more than 30 books, Dobson heads Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk, a nonprofit ministry and radio program. For 14 years, he was an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and was on the attending staff of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for 17 years. He earned his doctorate in child development from USC. He founded and is chair emeritus of Focus on the Family.

The filming each evening begins at 7 p.m. To learn more about this once-in-ageneration event and to reserve seats (while they last), visit: BuildingAFamilyLegacy.com.

Healing center . . . Continued from page 1 where people who are struggling can pray for their own needs and the needs of others, and also have others come alongside them with prayer. The center opened in 2003 in a rented space on South Coast Highway in Oceanside. As it was losing its rented space in 2009, the Mustard Tree Community was disbanding and the community — where several families shared their lives in four residences —donated the 2-acre property to the private non-profit organization that oversees the Christian Healing Center. “It’s a great example of Christian ecumenism,” said Pastor Joe Rees, chairman, noting the board members represent several North County fellowships, including New Song Community Church, Vista Assembly of God, St. James Catholic Church and Grace Anglican Church. One thing that distinguishes the center from the healing rooms located in different parts of the county is the two-day intensives that include private prayer sessions with two trained prayer ministers per client, interspersed with some quiet time and teachings about healing. Topics include God’s love for his children, forgiveness, emotional healing, vows and judgments, and generational healing. It concludes with a generational Eucharist. The sessions are modeled after the teachings of Francis and Judith MacNutt of Christian Healing Ministries, Inc. in Jackson, Fla., where Laundrié visited in February. Elizabeth Daly, director of pastoral

counseling at the Vista center, said people interested in any type of prayer, including the two-day intensives, should call the center office for more information and a registration packet. The number is (760) 295-4266. How effective is the prayer? “Something always happens,” Daly said. “God is very active, very busy and he knows us personally. Psalm 139 says He knows us intimately and His timing is perfect.” Does prayer always work? Laundrié noted that Jesus didn’t heal everyone. “Jesus didn’t go seeking out everyone who needed healing,” Laundrié said, citing three broad reasons for people not being healed: “Doubt is the No. 1 reason. There was doubt in Nazareth where even Jesus could do only a few minor things (Matthew 13:15), but the centurion believed in the authority of Jesus and his servant was healed, even while Jesus was far away. Then there’s unrepented sin and unforgiveness. I like what Francis MacNutt says, that unforgiveness is like acid — it destroys the container that holds it. These things can block the actions of the Holy Spirit to heal. “The third reason is God’s sovereignty. God gets to choose, and sometimes He won’t heal us because it’s a teaching moment for us, or even to discipline us.” “We see healing of the body, soul, and spirit,” Daly said. “It’s often intertwined, as we are complicated people.” Please turn to next page

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

– Psalm 139:13 (NIV)

Pregnancy begins at conception, OB-GYNs insist in feud with association A majority of American obstetricians and gynecologists believe pregnancy begins at conception, putting them at odds with the leading medical association in their field. A new survey showed 57 percent of the 1,000 obstetricians and gynecologists who responded to a questionnaire said pregnancy starts at conception, according to Reuters News Service. The questionnaire found 28 percent said pregnancy begins at implantation of the tiny embryo in the uterine wall. That occurs about a week after conception, also known as fertilization. The remaining 15 percent said they were uncertain. Since 1965, the American College of

Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) has held the position that pregnancy begins at implantation. The distinction is highly important. Pro-life advocates point out that a new human being, and therefore pregnancy, is established at conception. Some contraceptive methods not only can prevent fertilization but also have the ability to block implantation if fertilization occurs. When implantation is prevented, an abortion takes place, pro-lifers point out. They voice opposition to the use of contraceptives that have abortion-causing properties. C. Ben Mitchell, professor of moral philosophy at Union University in Jackson,

Tenn., told Baptist Press, “It’s actually quite amazing that the egg, once fertilized, has its own developmental trajectory. If the word ‘begins’ means anything, then one would have to affirm that pregnancy starts at least at conception. Any other definition would be to read pregnancy through the lens of politics.” The study showed doctors who said they are religious or opposed to abortion or birth control methods that block implantation are more likely to say pregnancy begins at conception, according to Reuters. Farr Curlin, senior author of the study and a professor at the University of Chicago, expressed surprise at the results.

According to Reuters, on Nov. 18 Curlin said: “People say that the medical profession has settled on this. What our data show rather clearly is that it is not at all settled among the medical profession.” Curlin said a weakness of the study is its use of the word “conception” instead of “fertilization.” Though the two words normally are considered synonymous, some use “conception” interchangeably with “implantation,” according to Reuters. The survey results were published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. ACOG declined to comment on the survey results, Reuters said. – Baptist Press

Meanwhile, there are other immediate needs like a new water heater, kitchen improvements, better parking and various repairs. Laundrié shared some other more radical ideas with the board last month at an open house, including the concept of building a new retreat center on top of the tennis court pad and tearing down the old building identified as the Retreat House. “We would replace it with hermitages and a meditation garden,” said the director, who is also an ordained minister and

prior to that a businessman. “It would be costly, but money is never a problem if it’s God’s vision.” They are grand ideas, but must be approved by the board and funding secured. “Our prayer is for it to be built out as big as God’s vision,” Laundrié said, who conducts a weekly Healing Eucharist service on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. at the center in Vista. For more information, visit www.christianhealingcenter.net.

Healing center open in Vista . . . Continued from previous page She gave the example of her own life, where as a young adult she had a set idea of who God was based on the male-figure example of her own father. “I had a picture of God being harsh and unavailable,” she said. “I also didn’t trust very much and felt that God was just ‘up there.’ After intense prayer, God gave me a completely new picture of who Jesus was.” Daly only works one day a week now, since she’s technically on a sabbatical until the first of the year. She’s been with the healing center since before it relocated in Vista and has established a strong team of prayer ministers from several churches, including Grace Chapel, Calvary North Coast, New Song, Grace Anglican and St. James. Each has gone through at least 16 sessions of training, with another series likely starting in the fall. Two of the prayer team members, Lily Loh of Solana Beach and Cory Graves of Del Mar, have been active in the ministry for about 10 years. They attend St. James Catholic Church in Solana Beach, and were involved in the prayer ministry when it was based in Oceanside. “God healed me of cancer in 2000,” Loh said. “I had chemo, but the doctors said it was a very aggressive form of cancer and suggested a clinical trial — or I’d be gone in two years. “Well, we declined the clinical trial and it’s more than 10 years now, and I’ve been healed of arthritis and ulcers, too. It’s incredible when God heals you.” When someone is healed, it’s natural that they have an interest in seeing God heal others. “You just want to help others,” Loh said. She and Graves (and Robert Graves, too) volunteer at least once a month in Vista, and are also involved in healing at their church. “God heals when people are desperate and cry out. He listens,” Loh added. Donna Brayton, director of operations

for the center, also serves as spiritual director. She turns 80 this year and said she planned to stay until December when her commitment ends. “I’m excited about the new vision and passing the baton,” she said. The property is on the west side of Valley Crest Drive split by a common drive. On one side of the drive is the Oasis Lodge, which houses the offices, healing rooms, kitchen and a reception area. Next to it is the 55-seat chapel, a tennis court pad and a lush garden that includes fruit trees, flowers, a reflection fountain, a meditation prayer garden, and outside dining area. On the other side of the common drive is the Lodge House, which is nearly completed, plus the Retreat House and a smaller Old Red Building. Much of Brayton’s recent focus has been on completing the renovation of the Lodge House, where people can come to find solitude. One of the things she points out in a tour of the facility is a painted sign stating, “Take time for silence, because God whispers and the world is loud.” The lodge house has six bedrooms, only one of which is completely remodeled. The others are ready except for furniture. The bedrooms each have a unique name: Hope, Courage, Guidance, Blessed, Listen, and Trust. Laundrié’s idea is to have sponsors for each room and to identify them with a smaller sign under the room name.

WOMEN’S FEAR NOT RETREAT September 14 - 16

Fear does not share the heart with happiness and robs us of peace and joy. v We’ve all been there – brokenhearted. It doesn’t feel good. The last thing we want to do is put our self into a similar situation that will generate the same kind of pain. Fear of being hurt often leads us to put walls around our heart. v Think back to when you first got out of high school. What dreams did you have? What did you want to accomplish? Did you do it? If not, what held you back? Often it is fear. v Our self-esteem can be linked to our willingness to face our fears. When we wimp out it sends a message to our brain we are incapable.

During the retreat you will … ÿ Learn to take confident steps toward an abundant life without fear ÿ Obtain victory over fear controlling you ÿ Grow a deeper faith in God With an intimate setting of only 30 women, you will have the opportunity to meet and make new friends with other Christian women who have similar struggles and fears. The weekend is a combination of speakers, small group experience, fun activities, and personal time.

Guest Speakers: Pamela Sonnenmoser, author of The Walls that Fear Built, reaches out to us with a message of hope. Her message Moving Past the Fear When We Can’t See the Plan will help you see past fears that hinder you from fulfilling the plan God has for you. Ruby Heaton, author, speaker and life coach brings the message Trusting God-Leaning on Daddy. Ruby has a ministry called The Butterfly Ministries. She has taught women in a variety of venues . Sandy Hancock, speaker, life coach and author of Letting Go, Pathway to an Amazing Life. Her message Stop Let Me Off reaches out to women and helps them get off the emotional roller coaster ride. Held at the beautiful Palomar Mountain Christian Conference

Free in-depth, verse by verse Bible study site launched By CAZ TAYLOR Logos Bible Study has announced the free Web access to Dr. Bill Creasy’s comprehensive, in-depth Bible study program of the entire Bible, verse by verse. Many say that listening to Creasy explain Scripture is like experiencing the Holy Land first-hand. In some ways they feel it is better, because Creasy carries with him experiences that come from 50 teaching tours that he has conducted there. When hearing his humorous antics and captivating insights, it becomes clear that you are listening to a man passionate about what he does. He has made it his life goal to excavate and understand the nuances of biblical cultures and mores. His detailed and in-depth understanding of Scripture has caused many of today’s Bible scholars and students alike to confess, “I didn’t know that.” As a born-again Christian and retired (in 2005) UCLA professor of literature, this storyteller is uniquely qualified to take poetic license in describing the sights, sounds, and sensations from biblical people and places. In a recent videotaping of the Portrait of Jesus series conducted through his organization known as Logos Bible Studies, attendee Ken Blanchard declared, “Bill Creasy is the greatest teacher of the Bible that I know. He makes it come alive. (For example), it is marvelous how he goes through the Old Testament in a sure way, and shows how that was the whole context for Jesus and setting up why He came. I think this message needs to get to everyone in his (Creasy’s) clear and storytelling way.” You may recognize the name of this enthusiast. A world-renowned Christian speaker, writer and entrepreneur, Blanchard authored the book One Minute Manager and numerous others. His Ken Blanchard Companies focus on presenting godly principles to business people and others worldwide. This month Creasy celebrates what he believes to be one of his hallmark accomplishments. He launches free website access through www.logosbiblestudy.org to provide verse-by-verse audio teachings of the entire bible, from Genesis to the Revelation. These teachings are filled with interesting facts and insights that help make sense of even those hard to understand Scriptures. For example, as a parent, one may wonder what it must have been like for Mary and Joseph when they realized that the young Jesus was missing from their Please turn to page 15

New local film company creating end-time thriller, ‘The Rapture Diary’ BY JUDY ERICKSON What happens when, in the rubble of a violent post-apocalypse society, a colonel in the New World Army discovers the aging diary of a college journalist who investigated end-time prophecies? All will be revealed when The Rapture Diary, brainchild of 35-year-old Carlsbad media producer and director Paul Tomborello, hits theaters early next year. Tomborello wrote the Christian thriller with two converging storylines, which he described as the “Batman Begins” of endtimes movies with a cool twist. Tomborello has signed Chula Vista actor Jamie Nieto of The Encounter and Jerusalem Countdown at the top of an impressive cast. Nieto likes how The Rapture Diary story plays out, “I’m a sci-fi person and it’s kind of like sci-fi to me,” he said. “The script is really cool.” Starring this year in Baseball’s Last Hero, The Robert Clemente Story, Nieto also made the Olympics trials for high jump. Nieto’s own new production company, Raising the Bar, completed its first three episodes of Blood Brothers, an urban crime drama Web series. Versatile and talented co-producer and actress Jennifer Cooper of Carlsbad plays opposite Nieto as college journalist Roxy in the first story line. View them in the trailer at www.bearfruitfilms.com. Cooper said the drama, mystery and suspense will change the face of Christian films. She wanted to be onboard from the minute she read the script. “There are so many passionate and talented people in-

volved in this project that I feel honored to be a part of it,” she said. “Paul Tomborello is an incredible director. It is clear that he wrote the script from the heart and he puts his heart and soul into every element of production.” The British actress gave her breakthrough performance in 2003s Hidden. She has starred in challenging roles in independent films and television shows such as Boy A and Prank Patrol. She also hosted and co-produced The Meet Market, San Diego’s local dating show, and has a role in an upcoming television series pilot. Tomborello is eyeing major Hollywood stars who are passionate enough about the project to cut their rate for a day’s shooting for parts including the Antichrist. He believes his script and cast interaction will witness to unbelievers on the set. The project has won interest from Pure Flix Entertainment to distribute and Union Digital Media in Arizona to produce, pending funding. Tomborello started his production company, BearFruit, this year to bridge the gap between faith-based films and the secular community through creative, challenging, unpredictable entertainment with integrity. BearFruit has gathered talented cast, crew and scripts for five feature films in the next five years, if funds allow. Tomborello has made short films with his producer and BearFruit co-founder James Simmons of Arizona since they were teens together there. “It’s a passion of ours, not just a hobby,” Tomborello said. “We feel really led. When God puts something on your heart, it doesn’t come from anywhere else.”

The story of David and Goliath inspired Tomborello as a child to believe that with God he could accomplish magnificent things. Such Old Testament stories, like the opening act before the main event, prepared him for “the greatest story ever told about Jesus Christ.” “I believe this is what faith-based cinema should do for us; be the stepping stone, the pot stirrer that gets people thinking and asking questions about the main event,” he said. San Diego County Fair to feature 1,000-voice choir as opening act for Donnie McClurkin on June 9

The annual Gospel Festival will take place during the opening weekend of the San Diego County Fair this year on Saturday, June 9. Once again, fairgoers will experience the best of contemporary and traditional gospel from top local and national groups, choirs and solo artists on several stages throughout the fair all day. The grand finale of the day takes place on the Grandstand stage with a free concert featuring Grammy Award winning artist Donnie McClurkin. Those attending the Grandstand concert are in for a special treat this year. The opening act will be a 1,000-voice choir, the “GF8 Super Choir.” This diverse choir is made up of seasoned professionals, people who sing in community and church choirs, as well as people who just have a love of singing and wanted to be a part of this historic event. The GF8 Super Choir is under the direction of international recording artist Brent Jones. The Grandstand show starts at 7:30 p.m. and is free with fair admission for unreserved seats on the third and fifth levels and the standing area in front of the stage. Reserved tickets can be purchased. Fairgoers are encouraged to arrive early. Last year the northbound 5 freeway had to be temporarily shut down due to the large number of cars traveling to the fair for the Gospel Fest Concert.

“Your duty is to come and preach the coming of the Kingdom of God to all the world.” — Luke 9:60b (LB)

Switchfoot expecting thousands for annual Bro-Am in Encinitas The eighth annual Switchfoot Bro-Am will be held Saturday, June 16, at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. Activities include a free benefit concert and a two-day surf contest. Switchfoot features Jon Foreman (vocals/guitar), Tim Foreman (bass), Chad Butler (drums), Jerome Fontamillas (keys/ guitar) and Drew Shirley (guitar). The popular group, which started in Encinitas, recently launched its 2012 North American tour. They also will be featured June 15 at the San Diego County Fair in Del Mar. Switchfoot recently released Vice Re-Verses, a limited edition remix CD of tracks from Vice Verses. Last month, the group received two GMA Dove awards — for song of the year and rock album of the year. The annual event at Moonlight Beach, presented by Hurley, was conceived as a way for Switchfoot members to give back to their hometown. While admission to the beach event is free, funds are raised from beach vendors and sponsorships, as well as at a pre-event auction night soiree. This year’s Bro-Am once again will benefit San Diego area chapters of StandUp for Kids, a national nonprofit volunteer outreach organization founded in San Diego that is dedicated to making a difference in the lives of at-risk, homeless and street kids (www.standupforkids.org). Since its

inception in 2005, the Bro-Am has raised more than half a million dollars for San Diego-based children’s charities. “The Bro-Am has been my favorite day of the year ever since we started it back in ‘05,” noted Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman. “We feel truly honored to again partner with StandUp for Kids, an incredible organization serving at-risk youth here in San Diego and across the country. Last year was our biggest year ever, and we hope to top it again this year. We are so grateful that our friends Dead Feather Moon, The Howls, and Brandon and Leah can join us for an incredible day of music and surf that will benefit a remarkable group of kids.” Festivities begin with the Switchfoot Bro-Am Kickoff and Auction Night Soiree on Thursday, June 14, at The Crosby at Rancho Santa Fe. It will feature VIP meet and greet opportunities, silent and live auctions, opportunity drawings, exclusive live entertainment, and delectable culinary creations and sips from such upscale establishments as Pacifica Del Mar, Solace & The Moonlight Lounge, Del Mar Rendezvous, Pacific Coast Grill, Zenbu, Rimel’s, and many more. A limited number of tickets for this evening went on sale April 27. For details, visit www.switchfoot.com/ switchfoot/c/bro-am. The annual surf contest has been ex-

The A-Team . . . Continued from page 1 — and they sang back to us. We then both worshiped simultaneously.” These electronic gatherings help encourage the American missionary abroad and also allows them to share prayer requests. “The missionaries have to gather their people to our Pacific Coast time zone so we can worship and pray with them,” Codde said. “We give the missionary a platform to share what they are doing and they can also present their needs and support needs. If there is a need, the local Christians who attend the gathering often help the missionary,” stated Jim. This is just a part of The A Team’s outreach. Many of the members have gone on missions trips and have met the missionaries they communicate with via Skype. Codde is owner of A-Team Contractors and founder of The A-Team. A-Team is an acronym for Agents Training in Evangelism and Missions. They have an office in Oceanside. “We are part of A-Team Contractors, Inc.,” Codde explained. “Some of these agents work for the company. I get them interested in missions — but first I get them interested in the Lord.” “There are over 400 agents of the Most High,” he continued. “Not all the agents work for A-Team Contractors. The agents are young and old adults. Their common bond is Christ.” There are requirements for being on The A-Team. “First, you have to have a relationship with Jesus Christ,” Codde said, “and second this is a guy thing, like a fraternity. It’s because we are in a male dominated industry with construction. I work with the guys who are part of ATeam Contractors and bring them along. If they become interested in missions and evangelism, they may go on a short term missions trip.” “All the agents pick a verse which becomes their agent number. For example, as an agent you pick Scripture verse John 3:16, you become known as Agent 316.”

The group has been on numerous trips, including Africa, Uganda, Ethiopia, India, Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia. The most recent was to Vietnam. “Before they go to ‘college,’ I like to expose them to the mission field to learn to evangelize,” Codde said. “With young people today, if they go to college first, they get loaded with student loans and have to go to work right away when they graduate. I like to get them to the mission field first, before they have their student loans to pay off. Otherwise, then they may never go.” It is always an enriching and exciting trip to visit the missionaries, and now with Skype is it easier to keep their relationships going and keeping things face-to-face. The Sunday meetings are at 7 p.m. at the Corner Café at North Coast Church in Vista. They usually last 1-2 hours and they Skype with two or three of the 15 missionaries they’ve been connected with electronically. “Before we actually Skype, there is the preparation of which missionary we will worship with and gathering the music for worship,” Codde said. “Once the songs are chosen, we use the Internet to get the music in the native language. The worship team then practices the music and leads us all in worship. The words are printed out in that native tongue and distributed to those in attendance.” The missionary also uses this gathering to evangelize with the people and bring them to this Skype gathering. “The A-Team would love to help other churches communicate with their overseas missionaries and to be an encouragement to them,” Codde said. “They can contact me at 760-535-1777 or show up any Sunday of the month at 7 p.m. at the Corner Café at North Coast Church. “We welcome people to come. We would love to have unity with other churches to Skype,” Codde said. “Our goal is to have different locations simultaneously. We can cross the continents and all nations can come together.”

Pat Herrell, left, retired pastor of Calvary Chapel Fallbrook, and Kit Carson, director of A Greater Hope Orphanage in Cambodia, baptize a young Cambodian, Bunhouen, during a recent missions trip. The orphanage, built under the direction of Herrell, is located in remote and rural Takeo Province, 90 minutes from Cambodia’s capital city of Phnom Penh. Due to its dark and difficult history, there is a high degree of hopelessness among its people. The orphanage was built with the goal of providing shelter, food, clothing and education to the children in the region — and the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Kit and Ream Carson, former residents of Fallbrook, serve as directors of the orphanage and school, which has more than 100 in grades K-6. Pat Herrell, the new pastor at Calvary Chapel Fallbrook, is continuing the church’s outreach to Cambodia.

Bible study . . .

Continued from page 8 caravan (Luke 2:41-51). By overlaying the culture of the day, along with a unique understanding of the rugged terrain and a mother’s anxiety, Creasy describes the scenario that will turn these few Scriptures into an unforgettable word picture. Multiply this by the entire canon and you’ll begin to see the treasure offered free to website visitors. The compilation and teaching of so many verses, chapters and books seems a daunting task. “Very few people in the world have had the opportunity to study the entire Bible verse by verse, but I decided to take people through it,” Creasy said. From his experience as a UCLA professor, he understood the disciplines behind such an undertaking. “If one were to teach five chapters of Scripture per session, over 30 weeks per year (emulating three college quarters), it would take approximately seven years to get through the entire Bible, in this way,” he added. “Now, people can find interesting insights to their favorite verses, chapters and books with just a few clicks of a computer mouse.” Typically, Creasy’s audience, which is a blend of Catholic and Protestant believers, appreciate how he humorously incorporates Bible history, geography, cultures and Scripture into a panoramic

and engaging journey through the Holy Book. He is very respectful to his varied groups of God-seekers, being sensitive to denominational and religious points of view. Often with his insights, he’ll offer various Jewish, Catholic and Protestant perspectives, shedding light on why each believe they way they do. The website housing these verse by verse teachings is very easy to navigate, with the 66 books, chapters and verses clearly displayed. He breaks down lessons, totaling about 500 hours of instruction, into various manageable categories. These include “The Old Testament Super Course,” which clearly displays each of the 39 books; “The New Testament Super Course,” which details each of its 27 books; “The Bible in 40 Lessons” and “The Bible in 80 Minutes,” along with various teachings of key Bible characters and popular themes. Other features include videos of the day, as well as free mobile apps for iPhones, iPads and other smart phones. Beyond the free website access, inexpensive downloads are available to most electronic media from what he calls “Logos on the Go.” “My plan is to make all this available to everyone who wants to know more about God’s Word and to more fully understand His wonderful plans for you and me,” said Creasy.

Piano and pastries for Paraguay

I

n John 6, Jesus lifts His eyes to see a great hungry multitude, and asks the disciples how they can feed them. Andrew replies, “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” Distributing the bread, Jesus turned that into enough to feed five thousand men, plus women and children, with twelve baskets left over. In Poway, two young ladies have heard their Savior’s call to feed and care for some of His children in Paraguay. Faith (14) and Danielle (12) Pigeon, have been raising money for the children of Su Refugio (His Refuge), and will take a trip there in July. This ministry is a church, orphanage, and feeding center near Tobati, Paraguay. On June 9, they are holding an event at their home, sure to delight music aficionados and gourmets alike. This talented twosome will serve pastries they and their friends have made, and play piano for those in attendance. Why Paraguay? As the Pigeon girls write in an appeal to friends: “If you didn’t know, Paraguay is a very depressed country, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. There is not a lot of work in Paraguay so often the husbands leave their families in order to find work. They usually travel to Argentina or Bolivia. After a while, the husbands often find new wives and families, leaving their loved ones in Paraguay with no source of income and no father. Eventually, the mothers leave the kids in order to find work also. The family is in ruins, and kids are abandoned to survive on their own or on the kindness of neighbors or relatives. We will be visiting an orphanage and

YOUR MISSION BILL SMITH feeding center during our trip where many of these children receive support.” In preparation for a trip their whole family is taking to Su Refugio, Danielle and Faith asked the head of Su Refugio what was needed for the orphanage. They were given a list: 21 pairs of shoes, volleyball and soccer equipment, and a foosball table. They sold their piano books for $100 already. (My kids would have been happy to do that! And the piano too!) On a rainy Saturday, a garage sale raised another $570, even though no item sold for more than $10. And on June 9, 3-5 p.m., they will be using their talents by tickling the ivories and tempting the palate at their home in Poway. With a $5 admission ($15 for a family), they hope to raise enough to finish off Su Refugio’s list. “God has been confirming that He wants us to do this. Prayers and contributions have been flowing in,” says Danielle. What counsel would these young ladies offer to others their age? “If you feel like God tells you to do it, go ahead!” A Pair of Pigeons in Poway with Piano and Pastries for Paraguay! Pitcher Bass a bright spot for a team that needs one By JOHN PHILIP WYLLIE

Photo: J.P. Wyllie

Anthony Bass takes his turn at batting practice.

Off to a horrible start and mired at the bottom of the National League standings, the San Diego Padres are in desperate need of some good news. One of the positive stories reported on this spring is the emergence of right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass. Bass, just 24, broke into the big leagues last season and showed promise as a reliever and sometime starter. This season, he has solidified his role with the Friars locking down the No. 4 slot in the starting rotation. Like several of his teammates, Bass comes from a solid Christian family. Recently, he shared a little bit about his faith. “I was born into a Christian family,” he said. “My parents taught us about the Bible from an early age and I went to Sunday school ever since I can remember. So, I have

known the Lord my entire life.” The Bass family attended a non-denominational church and he attended Catholic school until ninth grade. “That has given me an understanding of both the Catholic Church and nondenomination churches,” he noted. Once Bass reached high school he developed a deeper understanding of his faith. This was due in part to a retreat he attended. “A bunch of my friends and I attended the Spring Hill Retreat along with kids from a lot of other churches,” Bass recalled. “I beca me really close to the Lord and built a strong relationship with Him. (Prior to that time) I believed in God, but really didn’t have a strong relationship like I should have. From that time on, I began to read the Bible much more often. That was the turning point for me.” When he reached the majors for the first time last year with the Padres, Bass was pleased to find a group of Christian players there to greet him and make him

feel welcome. These players continue to share their faith through chapel and other activities. “Players here are not shy about sharing their faith,” according to Bass. “A group of us got together for five or 10 minutes the other day and prayed for one of our bullpen coaches who is struggling with cancer. It is great to see other guys who share the same faith sharing it openly.” Prior to coming to the Padres, Bass had the opportunity to share his testimony publicly while a member of the Lake Elsinore Storm. He found it a very rewarding experience. He will get another opportunity when the Padres host their annual Faith & Family Night on July 20 following their 7:05 game against the Colorado Rockies. In the past, players such as Nick Hundley, Chase Headley, Ernesto Frieri and Dustin Moseley have shared their faith. Many churches again will be getting involved in what is always a great evening of baseball, fun and fellowship. Tickets: (619) 795-5010 or [email protected].

Power of friendship . . . Continued from page 1 recognize the signs that a friend needs help, do something about it. Help is out there for all of us.” What are the chances that you, or someone you know, will need the kind of help of which Fouts spoke? According to figures published by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) more than 60% of all people who die by suicide suffered from major depression. Alcoholics who are depressed raise the percentage to 75%. How common is depression in America? The NCHS reports that depression affects nearly 10% of Americans ages 18 and older in a given year, or more than 24 million people. That’s more than coronary heart disease (17 million), cancer (12 million), or HIV/AIDS (1 million). So, there is a good chance in the next year that you will interact with someone who is clinically depressed, and quite possibly suffering suicidal ideas. The good news is that depression is highly treatable, with 80-90% positive response rates when depressed individuals seek treatment. The bad news is that most depressed individuals do not seek help. “Do something about it,” Fouts said. But what are we to do? First, if you suspect that someone you know is depressed, even if they have a normal range of emotions, learn all you can about it. Go online and gather information about depression. Many helpful resources are available with a click of a mouse. Reality is that you can’t make your loved one well, but you can offer understanding and hope. If your friend or family member is showing signs of depression, even if they are not making suicidal comments, there are several things you can do to increase safety and provide support. Since firearms are used in more than 50% of all suicides, remove all firearms from the depressed person’s home. Ninetynine percent of the time a person with suicidal ideas is not actually willing to end their life. But, during brief moments

of hopelessness, a depressed person may impulsively try to escape his or her pain through lethal means. Asking direct questions will not make one suicidal. In fact, helping a loved one acknowledge a problem is the first step in finding a solution. Usually there were clues, comments, or threats that in retrospect should have been taken seriously. Interestingly, suicidal behaviors can  increase as a depressed person starts to recover, feel more energy, and think more clearly. Use the power of the relationship with your loved one to provide hope. Tell them that they are important to you and that you want to help. Say things like, “I am here for you. We can get through this together.” Avoid judgmental statements like, “You should be better by now. You’ve got to snap out of it.” Scripture can be helpful, too, but it also can be used as a way to avoid talking about the hard questions. We don’t know what was going through Junior Seau’s mind before he took his life. His subjective reality may have been very different from what others saw on the outside. In facing the harsh reality of his death, we only can say that we all wish we could have been there to bring him hope in those final moments. May we take Dan Fouts’ admonition seriously and look for opportunities to provide support to those who feel downtrodden. The right words at the right moment may prevent the unthinkable from happening.  o Daniel Jenkins, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist at Lighthouse Psychological Services in Mission Valley. He is also a professor of psychology at Point Loma Nazarene University.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

Have purpose with kids’ activities San Diego Christian College closes escrow his year my oldest son, Jake, took on five buildings needed for move to Santee the plunge into club soccer. Growing

T

up playing the game competitively, I know of the time and financial commitment my parents made. My wife and I agreed it was time for Jake to move on from recreational soccer, even though it greatly multiplies her chauffeur responsibilities over the year. Add that to church activities, drum lessons, karate, and more soccer for our daughter, and life can get busy. As I talk with friends and clients in this same stage of life, organized children’s activity is a common focal point. I believe a lot of it has to do with safety. Specifically, kids don’t run around the neighborhood anymore. As kids, we played at the “greenbelt,” a long strip of green grass at the end of our street. I still drive by there often. I cannot remember the last time I have seen kids playing there. I do, however, see more signs to register for leagues and lessons and extracurricular classes. The gap left by the lack of “neighborhood play” does leave time for more organized activities. Beyond that, much of the push, I believe, can be dangerous if not carefully evaluated. The glamour of professional sports, singing shows, and the overall drive toward accomplishment are potentially debilitating motives. Last month, I wrote about the competitiveness for college admission and the high hurdle of paying for it. Many parents see scholarships as the only option to secure a good education. Financially, these activities can be budget-busters if not monitored, but that’s not my primary caution. My main concern is raising a generation that lacks substance. Our kids might have skills, and maybe even secure scholarships, but how far does that go if character is not built in the process? Kids are growing up ill-prepared for life. Obviously, I’m not against kids playing sports, taking music lessons, and learning other languages. Each has many character lessons: selflessness, dedication, and preparedness to name a few. Staying active can even relieve a child or a family from tempting waywardness. The caution has more to do with the purpose. Is the primary focus on winning or extracting the lessons to live as a son or daughter of the King of Heaven? The competing voices of the culture will sway someone who lacks a foundation. I get to see firsthand how money affects people.

PRINCIPLES OF PROSPERITY

ANTHONY SAFFER Those not grounded will often speak of their priorities but make contradictory financial decisions. The training process should ideally start with young children. If a child, over time, can build character, learn the family’s values and heritage, and collect wisdom, they are better prepared to handle their own finances and live with purpose and direction. That foundation is set not just with experience but also with reflection. When Jesus met with His friends Mary and Martha, Mary chose to sit and listen to Jesus while Martha was preoccupied with serving Him. Martha was bothered and said, “‘Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:40-42) Martha’s activity was not wrong, but Jesus said it was better that Mary took the time to settle before Him and know Him. Hustling to practice, even if it is “selflessly” for them, without modeling quiet time before the Lord, lacks substance. Will they learn not just how to earn money through their many skills, but learn contentment, generosity, and how to live as a steward with wisdom and purpose? From a parent’s perspective, it takes constant prioritization and evaluation of family activities. And, it’s a parent’s job to bring the focus of activity back to the principles and teachings of Jesus. Be purposeful in the legacy you leave to your children…And that is just one more Principle of Prosperity! o Anthony Saffer, CFP of Coleman & Johnson Financial Advisors, Inc., coordinates principled financial solutions for families. The new buildings are located in the Riverview Parkway center. This purchase comes as a milestone in San Diego Christian College’s history, as SDCC now owns property and buildings. “God is truly amazing and the collection of stories complied along this journey continue to write a testimony that gives praise for God’s remarkable blessings and favor poured out on SDCD,” said Paul Ague, board president. “In the spirit of ‘Going West,’ this is just another step on

the journey.” In order to complete the building interiors and move to Santee, SDCC continues to seek financial partners to help fuel its “Honoring our Heritage — Advancing our Future” campaign. Every prayer and every dollar guides SDCC closer to expanding its ability to impact the future for Christ, Ague said. With Dr. James Dobson

1<5, ‹!74 9:=7H[)\PSKPUN(-HTPS`3LNHJ`JVT;VKH` HISTORY REPEATS ... AND YOU’RE INVITED

Join Dr. James Dobson at Skyline Church* at one or both of a two-weekend “Building A Family Legacy” conference, as he presents powerful family wisdom for this generation . . . live. In 1978, Dr. Dobson led a seven-part series on marriage and parenting in San Antonio, Texas. There was one video camera running to capture that historic event. Within the next five years, over 80 million people viewed the films about raising a strong-willed child, daring to discipline, preparing for adolescence, fathering and more. Now, responding to groundswell demand, Dr. Dobson will update that series LIVE. You’re invited to be there as Dr. Dobson gives future generations timeless tools to build a strong family and a lasting legacy.
