Group turns trash into help for orphans By SARAH ZIMMERMAN One man’s trash is another man’s treasure is how the old proverb goes. Trash to Treasures Recycling works to turn your trash into a benefit to those in need. They work to save lives while saving the environment. It all began when a girl needed to raise funds to go on a missions trip and New Song Church in Oceanside agreed to match whatever she was able to raise on her own. The girl came across the idea to collect her neighbors’ recycling, with their permission, and turn it in for cash. Even after she met her goals, the neighbors continued to set

their recycling aside for the ministry. “We began praying for a way to give the money away when a lady asked for sewing machines to help girls in Liberia learn a trade so they won’t go into prostitution,” said Julia Mottola, who started Trash to Treasures. “That was five years ago, when God put those children on my heart and we had a steady income of $150 a month. We went before the church to get approval to collect their weekly recyclables as well.” Trash to Treasures was expanding like wildfire. They grew so quickly, they had a regular deposit at their local recycling center. Ben Recycling became their official Please turn to page 12

Unless there’s a financial miracle, the Spirit West Coast festival will be suspended from returning to the Del Mar Fairgrounds in 2013. The festival promoter, however, wants it back in future years and is developing a fundraising plan to help that occur. “Spirit West Coast was certainly successful in content — spiritually — with hundreds of decisions for Christ, said Jon Robberson, who started the first SWC in Monterey in 1997. Del Mar was added in 2004 and it’s been at both locations through 2010. Del Mar was skipped in 2011. “You can blame it almost entirely on the economy,” said Robberson. “We’ve lost hundreds of thousands of dollars the last three years, and

now we’re out of money and we just can’t just continue that way.” Attendance at this year’s 3-day festival on Memorial Day in Del Mar was 4,000 to 5,000, he said, a big difference from the peak of 12,000. Music festivals were scheduled at both venues this year, but the June date in Monterey was cancelled in the spring due to finances. Robberson, who lives in the Bay Area, and promotes concerts across the state year-round, said other music festivals across the U.S. are having problems as well. He cited the Cornerstone Music Festival in Illinois closing after 29 years as an example. “It’s not only the people who have lost their jobs that don’t have money to attend a festival, Please turn to page 20

ike and Julie had been married for 24 years when she sent me the e-mail for my book, 52 Ways to Wow Your Husband: Put a Smile on His Face. She described her most creative wow date for her guy as being a real ride down memory lane: “When I met my husband, he was a ‘wild at heart’ 24-year old whose primary source of transportation was a very fast motorcycle. Shortly after children arrived on the scene, we sold the bike and bought a used mini-truck, which was much more suited

to carrying bicycles, golden retrievers, and other “kid stuff.” It must have been hard for him, but he never complained. Our most creative date came just after we sent our youngest child off to kindergarten.” “On the morning of our anniversary,” she continued, “I gave him a card with money I had secretly saved up and directions to our first destination — a motorcycle shop where I had arranged to rent a Harley-Davidson for the weekend. It was such a thrill to see the smile on his face as we climbed onto that bike. It took us back to the time when

So the camera he gave me for a mid-life Christmas has much more meaning than Kodak ever imagined! Jesus used this “take them back” technique with Peter to prepare him for the future he had planned for him. It started with Jesus asking his followers, His disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, . . . I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church.” (Matthew 16:13-18) Peter’s name means “rock.” What does

in the rates of all racial and ethnic groups and virtually every state, according to the data released April 10. The rate reflects a variety of factors, said Valerie Huber, executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, “including family structure, parental expectations, socio-economics and type of sex education.” While the decrease constitutes positive news, Huber and Richard Ross, cofounder of the True Love Waits abstinence movement, both caution that the numbers hide other problems. “While teen birth rates have reached historic lows,” Huber said, “rates of sexual activity among teens are at historic highs.” Ross called the death of unborn babies and those that arrive without married parents an “incalculable tragedy” and said, “Those pregnancies are not the core issue. Sexual behavior itself is the issue.” Teenage births had a recent peak in 1991 of 61.8 live births for each 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 19. The most recent historic drop to 34.3 births per 1,000 continues a steady downward trend. Those previous high rates in the early 1990s were accompanied by a dangerous attitude toward teen-age sex, said Ross, professor of student ministry at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Millions continue to heed that call today. The National Center for Health Statistics released another report last year that showed an overall decline in teenage sex for the past 20 years. “We know that abstinence is a message that resonates with teens,” – Baptist Press

Refuge from threat of online porn offered by new McDowell ministry Josh McDowell, a leading advocate for children and the preservation of the Christian family, has launched Just1ClickAway.org, a new series of provocative but tastefully produced resources that raise awareness about the growing threat of online pornography. Released just in time for summer vacation when students’ media consumption significantly increases, the Just1ClickAway. org website, video and articles from McDowell and his network of participating organizations offer solutions for families and individuals of all ages and stages. McDowell placed a warning label on the video because of its mature content. “The greatest threat to the cause of Christ is pervasive sexuality and pornography,” McDowell said. “Today, we have, by and

large, lost control of the controls because an intrusive immorality is just one click away from our children. With just one keystroke on a smartphone, iPad, or laptop, a child can open up some of the worst pornography and sexually graphic content you can imagine. There’s never been such access in history.” Just1ClickAway.org contains the latest resources in The Bare Facts, McDowell’s biblically-based, medically-sound and culturally-relevant campaign that provides youth and those who influence them with an understanding of love, sexuality and relationships. Pornography is an equal opportunity intruder, as demonstrated by the newly released Just1ClickAway.org video: A young boy on his laptop in the privacy of his

bedroom, a father clutching a TV remote in the family room, and a teen-age girl on her PDA in the kitchen. Dramatically portrayed as male and female tempters (wearing clothes), pornography aggressively preys on and attacks its victim, virtually in plain view of unsuspecting family members. The video shares disturbing statistics about the destructive impact of pornography on the Christian family, including: • More than one-billion pornographic websites are one click away. • The average age of first-time viewers of pornography is 9 years old. • 80 percent of 15-17 year olds have been exposed to hardcore porn.

Cohabitation no longer a divorce risk? Hardly By GLENN T. STANTON Many news sources would have us believe, as the Christian Science Monitor reported, “Cohabitation before marriage? It’s no greater divorce risk.” Perhaps you’ve seen such headlines and wondered if it’s true. In a word, no. There are a few things to consider with this news, which originates from a recent report of the National Center for Health Statistics. First, this was not a study on cohabitation per se, but an examination of first marriages in the U.S. The cohabitation question was only a small subset of the overall report. So, it’s far from a full-blown examination of cohabitation and marriage formation in our nation. Second, seldom does one study, regardless of its quality, create a paradigm change in the common body of knowledge on a topic, particularly in topics of sociology and psychology of family formation. And this is only one study in a very long, impressive and diverse body of research showing that premarital cohabitation is generally shown to be associated with greater divorce risk in marriage. This study recognizes this fact, explaining that “it has been well documented that women and men who cohabit with their future spouse are more likely to divorce” compared with the non-cohabiting marrieds. In fact, one study by a small group of leading family sociologists found that the negative impact of cohabitation upon marital quality and longevity did not wane as cohabitation became more socially acceptable. Third, the study clearly explains that there are differences in marital longevity between the cohabiters and non-cohabiters. Table 7 within the study shows this, though it shows differences smaller than previous studies. But it does not show “no difference.” The study notes that “women who cohabited with their first husband — regardless of whether they were engaged when they began living together — had lower probabilities of marriage survival at 20 years than woman who did not cohabit before marriage with their first husband.” Fourth, it is unclear in reading the study, but it appears as if this study looked at only married couples that had lived together — engaged or not — before they married. This means that those who cohabited serially — even only once — before they met their future spouses where not included in the analysis. The study does not make this clear, and it is not an insignificant point, considering serial cohabiters who marry

have a general risk of divorce twice that of those who cohabited only once before marriage, whether with their spouse or someone else. So don’t believe that the significant negative impact of cohabiting has finally disappeared into the ozone. Lots of good data tells us it’s still there. o Glenn T. Stanton is the director of family formation studies at Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, and is the author of The Ring Makes All the Difference: The Hidden Consequences of Cohabitation and the Strong Benefits of Marriage. This column first appeared at National Review Online’s The Home Front (nationalreview.com/homefront) and is distributed by the Baptist Press.

• The adult pornography industry reports that 20-30 percent of their traffic comes from children. • Half of all Christian families report that pornography is a problem. • 68 percent of divorces happen when one partner finds a pornographic lover online. • 30 percent of pastors have viewed pornography in the past 30 days. With more than 50 years in ministry, McDowell continues to find that nothing sabotages faith commitments and spiritual growth of children, teens and college students more than sexual experimentation. “A wise man will hear and increase in learning. And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.” – Proverbs 1:5 (NAS)

No such thing as being ex-gay? By ERIC METAXAS After the memorial service for Chuck Colson at the National Cathedral, I spoke with Patty Colson, Chuck’s wife of 48 years, and I asked her if she had any advice for me for doing BreakPoint. She said, “Do what Chuck did — read the New York Times.” Of course I do read the New York Times because it is a great resource for teaching worldview — because most of the time it perfectly illustrates the opposite of the Christian worldview.

GUEST COMMENTARY For instance, the Times recently ran a fawning article about a psychiatrist named Robert Spitzer. Spitzer played a big role in the American Psychiatric Association’s po-

Is it time to consider a national Christian third party? By MICHAEL SUOZZI Third parties have regularly appeared in American history. The most important third party appeared on the presidential ballot in 1856, the Republican Party with John C. Fremont of California for president. The Republican Party broke off from the Whig Party. In 1860 and 1864, the party triumphantly nominated Abraham Lincoln of Illinois for president. Until 1932 the Republican Party collected victory after victory. Its fall was brought about by the Great Depression and by its subservience to Wall Street. Other less successful third parties included the Populists, Progressives, various Socialist Parties, any number of regional parties like the States’ Rights Party of 1948, and parties like Ross Perot’s efforts, and that of Ralph Nader in recent elections.

GUEST COMMENTARY A national Christian patriotic party would attract evangelicals, conservative Roman Catholics, and others who realize they have no real power in the Republican Party and certainly none among Democrats. Anti-Christian power has increased especially in public education where Christianity is attacked every day. We also see in California’s state government a totally anti-Christian character. The Republican Party is permeated by liberalism, especially in California, New York, and in the Midwest and Northeast. It no longer represents an adequate vehicle for a Christian agenda. Indeed it was the Republican Party that

appointed such enemies of Christianity as Stevens, Souter, Blackmun, Warren, and O’Connor to the U.S. Supreme Court. If the Republican Party is carefully examined, we find it to be as morally rotten as the Democrats. A new party cannot immediately win all it wants, but it can make a big contribution to forcing both corrupt parties to reassess their attitudes. Many conservative Democrats might join a Christian party. There is no way to predict how quickly a Christian National Patriotic Party would acquire power on all levels. More probably, a Christian party would provide the margin of victory in many places. Christians could force candidates to consider whether or not it would be feasible to acquiesce to Christian ideas. A Right-to-Life Party in New York State emerged with considerable clout in the 1980’s. Other third parties have had influence in blunting anti-Christian moves. A Christian party could adopt a totally patriotic, pro-military, pro-life, pro-values agenda and draw considerable numbers. As time went on, all conservatives would gravitate toward it. The two corrupt parties would start to notice their losses. The issues we care about as Christians of whatever denomination or church are clearly pro-life, an Army and Navy second to none, a responsible federal budget, a solid currency, education free of leftist control, freedom of education for Christians away from public schools, values that reflect Christian ideas about the home and community. Neither party does anything

in these areas and the USA is beginning to become part of a global dictatorship run by banks and conglomerates with the total annihilation of borders and the destruction of our currency. Christians are the last line of defense before Wall Street, the globalists and the Communists crush all freedoms and rights in America. Unlimited immigration is one of the tools being used to destroy a Christian America. The clock is ticking away. Both parties are controlled by globalists in league with the world Communist conspiracy. Do we need to crawl to Communist China? Who thought that up? Do we need shoddy products and poisonous food produced by Red China’s slaves? Dumbing down all students, turning them into party boys and party girls, hedonistic slobs listening to rap and moronic pseudo-music, demoralizing youth and ripping away their Christian faith until there is nothing left but an MTV slob with pierced tongue, pierced face and pierced everything else. Christians, you are asleep, rocked to sleep by your own hedonism and your own ignorant leaders. Look around you. America is no longer Christian. If it were, would your president be afraid to mention Jesus Christ in his speeches and would the savages who sit on your courts dare to attack Christ and the Scriptures as they do? A new Christian Patriotic Party would not immediately pay off a ten trillion dollar national debt or bring about world peace. But it would bring honesty, respect for the human body, virtue, and decency back to every area of our national life. The two corrupt parties are already sold out to the anti-Christians. There is no help to be found in these tin horns. Christians, you are the last defense of this nation. A new Christian party is the only way to go. Modest beginnings will be the rule. But it will snowball. Long ago, a great Christian, Patrick Henry of Virginia, stood up to defy tyranny. His words reverberate down the centuries, “Give me liberty or give me death.” We must defy the corrupt political-socialeconomic order now. Third party now! o Michael Suozzi of La Mesa taught history, geo-politics and the social sciences in colleges in four states. He earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University, New York.

litically charged decision in the early 1970s to drop homosexuality from its manual of mental disorders. Spitzer became a hero in the gay community. In 2003, however, Spitzer decided to investigate the claims of people who had gone through some form of reparative therapy. The results were explosive. As Spitzer recalled, “The majority of participants gave reports of change from predominantly or exclusively homosexual orientation before therapy to a predominantly or exclusive heterosexual orientation in the past year.” Predictably, the gay lobby got very upset. They attacked the study’s methodology, how the results were interpreted by others, and the morality of doing such a study. But now, as told in the Times’ article, Spitzer is backing down. He says that when a journalist told him he had undergone reparative therapy at the urging of his parents, and that the therapy had “delayed his self-acceptance as a gay man,” Spitzer decided to apologize for a study that he now considers fatally flawed — because, he said, “there was no way to determine if the subject’s accounts of change were valid.” Of course, there was never any chance the gay lobby was going to accept Spitzer’s study — no matter how well designed it was. They are too heavily invested in the claim that people are “born gay” and cannot possibly change their orientation. And if the Times writer Benedict Carey had wanted to cover this story fairly, perhaps he could have made some effort to track down former patients who were happy with the counseling or therapy that they had undergone — men who had seen their same-sex attractions diminish. There are plenty of them, as my friend, psychiatrist Jeffrey Satinover, notes in his book Homosexuality and the Politics of Truth. Satinover writes, “Since the professional normalization of homosexuality, we no longer hear of the many successful programs that continue to ‘cure’ homosexuality nor of the deeply moving stories of those who have successfully negotiated this difficult passage.” While the debate over how many people will benefit from such therapy will doubtlessly continue, we’ve got to be clear on the biblical position about human sexuality, and that is that God intended it for the blessing of a man and a woman within marriage and for the procreation of children; and that all sexual activity (hetero- and homosexual) that is outside of marriage is outside of God’s will. And we and our churches should be offering love and support to anyone who is struggling in this area. I hope you’ll read Satinover’s book. It is informative, compassionate — and it’s a great resource for those who want the truth about homosexuality. Because while the New York Times says that it gives us all the news that’s fit to print, when it comes to covering success stories that back up the Christian worldview, all too often the truth itself becomes a culture-war casualty. o Eric Metasas is one of the writers continuing the work of Chuck Colson of Prison Fellowship. San Diego among cities with lowest rate of self-identified Christians Cities in the Southeast have the highest percentage of churchgoers and self-identified Christians while cities in the Northeast and Northwest contain the greatest percentage of self-identified atheists and agnostics, according to a new Barna study that largely confirms perceptions of the nation’s religiosity. The data is based on nearly 40,000 surveys conducted over the last seven years

by the Christian research group. The lowest percentage of self-identified Christians are found in San Francisco (68 percent), Portland, Ore. (71 percent), Portland, Maine (72 percent), Seattle (73 percent), Sacramento (73 percent), New York (73 percent), San Diego (75 percent), Los Angeles (75 percent), Boston (76 percent), Phoenix (78 percent), Miami (78 percent), Las Vegas (78 percent), and Denver (78

Official military Bibles on the way out The U.S. Military has revoked its approval of a series of military-themed Bibles, reportedly over trademark issues. The military series of Bibles were published by B&H Publishing, a division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest non-Catholic denomination. They published four versions of the Holman Christian Standard Bible — representing the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. The Bibles were tailored to each specific military branch. For example, the cover of the Marine version says “The Marines’ Bible” — along with the USMC emblem. The Bibles contain special prayers and devotional material for military personnel. But the Military Religious Freedom Foundation complained that the Bibles were an official endorsement by the U.S. Military. They alleged the Bibles not only violated the U.S. Constitution, but also violated Defense Department regulation. The foundation is claiming victory. “It totally savages one of the most basic

Department of Defense regulations that exists,” spokesman Mikey Weinstein told Fox News Radio. “It does not allow the endorsement of a non-federal entity by the Department of Defense.” A LifeWay spokesman said the publisher received authorization to use the official seals of the military branches in 2003. B&H changed the Bibles last year. “B&H Publishing Group received authorization in 2003 to use the official seals of the U.S. military branches on a series of HCSB Bibles,” the spokesman, Marty King, said. “We received notice last year from the various branches withdrawing authorization. After selling existing inventory of those Bibles, B&H replaced the official seals with generic insignias, which continue to sell well and provide spiritual guidance and comfort to those who serve.” The Department of Defense stressed that the revocation was solely a trademark issue and had nothing to do with religion. A spokesperson said those decisions are typically left up to the individual branches of the military. – Baptist Press

WOMEN’S FEAR NOT RETREAT September 14 - 16

Fear does not share the heart with happiness and robs us of peace and joy. v We’ve all been there – brokenhearted. It doesn’t feel good. The last thing we want to do is put our self into a similar situation that will generate the same kind of pain. Fear of being hurt often leads us to put walls around our heart. v Think back to when you first got out of high school. What dreams did you have? What did you want to accomplish? Did you do it? If not, what held you back? Often it is fear. v Our self-esteem can be linked to our willingness to face our fears. When we wimp out it sends a message to our brain we are incapable.

During the retreat you will … ÿ Learn to take confident steps toward an abundant life without fear ÿ Obtain victory over fear controlling you ÿ Grow a deeper faith in God With an intimate setting of only 30 women, you will have the opportunity to meet and make new friends with other Christian women who have similar struggles and fears. The weekend is a combination of speakers, small group experience, fun activities, and personal time.

way with the highest percentage of atheists and agnostics (19 percent), trailed by Portland, Ore., Sacramento and Spokane, each at 16 percent. On doctrine, significant differences between cities also were evident. Nearly three-fourths of those who live in Charlotte, N.C. (73 percent) and Shreveport, La. (73 percent) agree with the statement that “the Bible is accurate in all of the principles it teaches.” But few in Providence, R.I. (27 percent) and San Francisco (28 percent) agree with the statement. Still, a large percentage of the country self-identifies as Christian, with the highest percentage found in the South: Shreveport (98 percent) leads the way, followed by Birmingham (96 percent), Charlotte (96 percent), Nashville (95 percent), Greenville, S.C./Asheville, N.C. (94 percent), New Orleans (94 percent), Indianapolis (93 percent), and Lexington, Ky. (93 percent). From an evangelical perspective, the “self-identified” category does not mean that a person is a Christian — only that he or she claims to be one. – Staff and Baptist Press

Gay marriage case heading to Court

Santa Monica bans nativity tradition

The question of whether states can — under the U.S. Constitution — define marriage as between a man and a woman could be headed to the U.S. Supreme Court after an appeals court declined to hear the widely followed Proposition 8 case. The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals declined June 5 to reconsider the Prop 8 case, meaning that if the Supreme Court does not take up the case and if a ruling by a three-judge panel stands, then gay marriage will become legal in California. But if the Supreme Court does take up the case, then the larger constitutional question — can states define marriage as between a man and a woman? — could come before the court. That means the case would impact not only California but all 40-plus states that don’t recognize gay marriage, including the 30 with constitutional amendments defining marriage as between a man and a woman. If the Supreme Court does take the case, then oral arguments in the “Roe v. Wade of gay marriage,” as some have called the Prop 8 lawsuit, could be heard as early as this fall. Another gay marriage case, concerning the Defense of Marriage Act, also could be heard this fall. That one would answer a different question: Can the federal government decline to recognize the gay marriages from a given state? Prop 8 is a constitutional amendment approved by California voters in 2008 that defines marriage as between one man and one woman. It was overturned in 2010 by a federal judge, and in February of this year a panel of the Ninth Circuit, in a 2-1 decision, upheld the judge’s ruling. That decision was appealed to the Ninth Circuit.

The Santa Monica City Council is ending a nearly 60-year-old Christmas tradition of allowing Nativity displays in Palisades Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Responding to a clamor of opposition from atheists concerning the religious displays, the council voted unanimously 5-0 (with two members absent) on June 12 to ban all displays from the park. “The city has abdicated its duty to protect the First Amendment’s guarantees of free speech and the free exercise of religion within a traditional public forum — a city park,” said William J. Becker Jr., a First Amendment attorney and lead counsel for the Santa Monica Nativity Scenes Committee, a group that has been seeking to preserve the Nativity scenes tradition. “The city council members surrendered to the angry mob and, in the process, sent the world a message that religious freedom is not worth protecting in Santa Monica.” Last year, the city instituted a controversial lottery system, whereby the group

Supporters of Prop 8 made clear they will appeal the case to the Supreme Court. “The Supreme Court has made it perfectly clear that marriage is constitutional as a matter of state public policy,” Charles J. Cooper, an attorney with the team defending Prop 8, said. “We’re pleased to petition the Court to hear this case. The lower court opinions were little more than an attack on the character and judgment of millions of Californians, and those decisions essentially ignored all relevant Supreme Court and appellate court precedent. We are hopeful and confident that the Supreme Court will review the Ninth Circuit’s decision.” Prop 8 supporters took heart in a dissent signed by three judges, who said the court had “silenced ... respectful conversation” on the subject of marriage. The judges took issue with how the Ninth Circuit panel in February interpreted a 1996 case, Romer v. Evans. In Romer, the Supreme Court reversed a Colorado constitutional amendment that prohibited laws protecting homosexuality. “Based on a two-judge majority’s gross misapplication of Romer v. Evans ... we have now declared that animus must have been the only conceivable motivation for a sovereign State to have remained committed to a definition of marriage that has existed for millennia,” the dissenting judges asserted. “Even worse,” the dissenting justices said, “we have overruled the will of 7 million California Proposition 8 voters based on a reading of Romer that would be unrecognizable to the Justices who joined it, to those who dissented from it and to the judges from sister circuits who have since interpreted it. We should not have so roundly trumped California’s democratic process without at least discussing this unparalleled decision as an en banc court.” – Baptist Press

that wins the lottery is allowed to display its viewpoint. That system led to disputes over the fairness of the new rules when lottery-winning atheist groups displayed signs and banners attacking Christian beliefs and left a full block within the park empty of displays. In early June, attorneys for the Nativity scenes group sent a letter to the city council urging it to delay action on the proposed ban. In spite of that letter and throngs of local residents who appeared in support of the holiday tradition, City Attorney Marsha Moutrie stepped up her support for the ban on unattended displays. “The city lacked the will to come up with a creative solution to the problem of accommodating the anti-religion agitators and caved in to their demands to remove a universally cherished symbol of the Christmas season from its traditional place in Palisades Park,” Becker said. “This act represents an erosion rather than an expansion of First Amendment vitality in America.”

Sex-selection abortion ban fails in House The U.S. House of Representatives fell short in its effort to prohibit abortions based on a baby’s sex. In a roll call May 31, the House voted 246-168 for the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act but lacked the two-thirds majority required for passage. Supporters needed 30 more votes based on the number of members who participated in the roll call. The bill came to the floor for a vote under “suspension of the rules,” which mandates a super-majority for approval. The proposal likely would have advanced no further had it gained the twothirds margin. The Democrat-controlled Senate likely would have rejected it, and the White House had indicated President Obama’s opposition to the bill. In the Republican-controlled House, 226 GOP members and 20 Democrats voted for the ban, while seven Republicans joined 161 Democrats in opposing it. It would seem a proposal to outlaw abortions performed based on the sex of the unborn child — procedures that almost

always eliminate females — would be likely to gain overwhelming support. Yet, 40 percent of the House opposed the measure, arguing — among other things — that it would undermine abortion rights, intimidate physicians and discriminate against certain ethnic groups in which sex-selection abortion has been evidenced. Pro-life advocates expressed amazement at the amount of opposition to the bill. “It is staggering that in a nation where Gallup tells us that a majority of Americans describe themselves as pro-life, the Congress elected by that same population could contain 168 members who are willing to go on record as refusing to outlaw killing an unborn baby because it’s the wrong sex,” said Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. Public support for making sex-selection abortions illegal appears strong. A 2006 Zogby International poll showed 86 percent of Americans agreed that it should be illegal. – Baptist Press

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

40 Minutes for Life launched in San Marcos 40 Days for Life has been making people aware of the pro-life movement for a number of years at several locations in the county. However, those spring and fall campaigns have left a void for people wanting to continue spreading the pro-life message throughout the year. Some have individually done sidewalk counseling at abortion clinics, but an Escondido pastor has launched a new monthly effort called 40 Minutes for Life. Pastor Matt Richardt of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church is calling pro-lifers to gather on the fourth Sunday every month at 7 p.m. on the sidewalk in front of the Palomar Pomerado Health Center, the building where Dr. George Kung performs

abortions on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings. The offices are a block from Cal State San Marcos. “Our idea is to bring something beautiful to a very tragic place,” Richardt said. “We would like to surround the entire block with people. We burn candles and everyone can sing, pray, read, have silent prayer and close with the Lord’s Prayer. We basically turn the sidewalk into a chapel.” Many denominations are represented at the gatherings, which began in March, the pastor said. He gave examples of members from Presbyterian, Roman Catholic and non-denominational churches participating. “This has also been good because it’s brought people together,” he explained.

“During the 40 Days for Life, different churches take different days and they may not see all the others involved. The pro-life movement is growing, and this will help people realize it.” Honey Burke, a Presbyterian, said the purpose of the gatherings are to join together as Christians to witness publicly to the community, to pray for the unborn, their parents, and all those affected by abortion — and for our country. The gatherings have started in San Marcos but may continue to other locations. The 40 Days for Life has organizations in San Diego and East County, focusing on Planned Parenthood in El Cajon and San Diego, as well as Family Planning Associates in San Diego. Desperate World Pro-choice view slides in Gallup poll Americans who consider themselves pro-choice on abortion are at a record low, according to a new Gallup public opinion poll. Forty-one percent of Americans identify themselves as pro-choice — marking a drop of 6 percent since July and the lowest percentage since Gallup began asking the public in 1995 to self-identify as pro-choice or pro-life. The Gallup organization reported the dramatic downturn for pro-choice advocates May 23. The same survey showed 50 percent of Americans identify themselves as pro-life, one point less than the record high, which was set in May 2009. The previous low of 42 percent for pro-choicers also came in the 2009 poll. Pro-life leaders expressed no amazement at the trend — which was demonstrated among Republicans, Democrats and independents. “This is not just an American phenomenon,” said C. Ben Mitchell, professor of moral philosophy at Union University in Tennessee. “Now that imaging technologies offer us a clearer picture of what’s happening in the womb, it is increasingly difficult to dehumanize the unborn person in a mother’s body. “Even in our fallen, fragile world, human life in all its stages gives testimony to the

image of God,” said Mitchell, a longtime consultant with Southern Baptists’ Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List pro-life organization, said in a written statement, “It comes as no surprise that more Americans are shedding the ‘pro-choice’ label as they come to terms with what is really meant by this hollow branding. “The big ‘abortion liberates’ and those who promulgate it are becoming unmasked,” Dannenfelser said. In the breakdown by political identification, the poll showed: • Independents identifying as pro-choice dropped since May 2011 from 51 to 41 percent, while those labeling themselves as pro-life increased from 41 to 47 percent. • Republican pro-choicers fell in the past year from 28 to 22 percent, while pro-lifers grew from 68 to 72 percent. • Democrats identifying as pro-choice decreased in the past 12 months from 68 to 58 percent, while those considering themselves pro-life increased from 27 to 34 percent. While the survey demonstrated a noteworthy shift in Americans’ self-identification as pro-life or pro-choice, it showed little change on the questions of the morality and legality of abortion, Gallup reported. – Baptist Press

was their living room. Without God, they may never be able to find peace and get out of their own head, which means they forever will be stuck.” On June 7, Mancini was driving to work and it felt like someone had just hit her heart and said, “You need to collect Bibles and give the Homeless Cement Communities Bibles so they can find God.” Statistics say 8,500 homeless people, including 3,000 veterans, live in San Diego. “If I can literally share the Word of God and one person finds God, how awesome would that be!” Mancini exclaimed. “One person less who may be able to escape sitting forever on the cement would mean I have done what I’m supposed to do and my heart would be full.” She has collected 58 Bibles through June 15, with many leads to collect more. “My goal is to reach 1,000 by my birthday in September,” Mancini said. “In September, I’ll lead a group to pass out Bibles safe inside a plastic bag with a note of love from God. If anyone can donate a used or new Bible — or multiple Bibles — please contact me and I’ll pick them up. Bibles also can be mailed to Amber Mancini, P.O. Box 84, Alpine, CA 91903. David and wife Linda attend The Rock Church, Temecula Valley. “Any group of people can be first described as a mob,” he said. “Look at church gatherings just prior to the service, people chatting with no focus or unity. Worship is what draws people together to bring all minds, hearts and actions to the cross and heaven-ward. It is this worship that honors our King, our Lord and God. we praise Him! When people of God are of one mind and heart, lifting up songs of praise unto heaven’s throne, God moves mightily. In Acts, when the people came together in unity, He responded by pouring out His Spirit upon them. Everyone worships something — shouldn’t it be the One who gave His all for us? When we worship the King of Kings, His Glory enters in; multiply that by 100 or 1,000, and the enemy doesn’t stand a chance!” Unity is also important to Estha Trouw, the former Fox news anchor who works part time with Moms In Prayer as media and production manager. Perhaps it is the ‘where two or more are gathered’ — but I find congregational worship incredibly conducive to not only bringing out a higher sense of worship but a greater ability to hear His voice and discern His will. Within congregational praise and worship a space is created for soaring even higher with the Holy Spirit and also receiving a larger picture from the Lord. “ While there are many common denominators in the ways believers experience congregational worship, such times hold unique opportunities for one on One intimacy. Please allow these testimonials to increase your expectations for what God desires to do through you, His Church. o Caz Taylor wrote David’s Tabernacle, Patterns for New Testament Worship, and is coowner of www.bizvidcommunications.com.

PUBLIC SCHOOL CURRICULUM If you are an active or retired teacher, why should you put Tuesday, July 24, at 11:30 a.m. on your calendar? There will be a meeting of public and private school teachers to share what God is doing in the public and private schools of Latin America. A K-12 curriculum was developed to give students the tools to make quality life decisions based on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Latin American teachers receive government mandated training to be certified to teach the curriculum. Parental involvement is also a part of the program. 300,000 students in Bolivia have already received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and have been discipled in the Word of God through the program. The changes in the lives of the students are so dramatic that the Bolivian government has accredited the curriculum for use in the public schools even though it is Biblically-based and presents the Gospel. Chile and Paraguay have recently begun to use the program and many other Latin American countries are interested. Joske Malloy of Mission Generation, the primary writer of the curriculum, has certified about 30,000 teachers in Bolivia. The effect of the program has been so powerful in Latin America that

it has built a case for a pilot program in the US for the 2012-2013 school year. The free meeting will be in the home of a Linda Colby in Rancho Bernardo who is a public school teacher in the Solana Beach School District, and will last for about 1.5 hours. Light lunch will be served. This is not a fundraiser, but an opportunity for Joske to share why the curriculum is so effective and how it can be adopted by public schools. There are short and longterm missionary opportunities for American teachers to go into the public schools of Latin America. To register for the meeting, please call Bill Mattingly at 760.591.7525, or email Bill at [email protected].

had to ask ourselves about the people here. What can we do for them?” A year and a half ago, Trash to Treasures began supporting Solutions for Change, a local organization that is helping homelessness for hundreds of children and their families. Mottola called it the perfect partnership. Solutions for Change brings families into housing for 1,000 days and teaches them a new trade and how to live off of what they have. When Mary, the woman housing 32 children in Liberia, died, people there took these orphans into their homes. Money from Trash to Treasures helps them plant gardens and pay for schooling, food, and clothing. “We try to help them help themselves,” Mottola said. Through a partnership with RIM Ministry, Trash to Treasures is able to help foster families in three cities in Liberia — more than 85 kids and 22 parents in 2011. Every penny sent to Liberia comes from trash. Trash to Treasures does not ask for donations but merely trash! It helps save the environment, as well as the children. “God has a sense of humor,” said Mottola. “I never expected to become known as the ‘trash lady.’” Motolla said she would encourage other churches to start a similar ministry. Sonshine Haven . . . Continued from page 1 middle school program called Higher Ground Club. The motto of the Sonshine Clubs is “It’s fun! It’s free!” and activities include snacks, games, prizes, Bible studies and character building. “We have wonderful volunteers who we call teachers,” Rothman said. “We’ve been able to expand because of the volunteers — and with more volunteers, we can open up more schools.” The school year seemingly never ends at Sonshine Haven. In late June it began its 5-week Life Skills program. Rothman said the purpose of the free Life Skills classes is to engage the children in productive, fun activities, and along with learning new skills, making new friends, learning positive ways of communicating with one another and knowing that they are at a place where they can feel safe. More than 1,000 children attend three days a week as volunteers teach cooking, sewing, sports, computers, fitness, art, nature, dance, music and more in rented classrooms and other rooms at First United Methodist Church in El Cajon. “During our Bible time, each day after lunch, the children are taught the word of God through song, Scripture and object lessons,” Rothman said. “This year they’re learning about the fruits of the Spirit.” Rothman said that during the program, there’s a Moms Night Out activity with dinner, door prizes and pray. There are usually salvations as an end result. “God is doing great things here, with the children and their families,” Rothman exclaimed. She said the volunteers are committed to helping all of “our children” and their families move past failure and guide them towards personal, spiritual, and relational success. “Children are a gift from God and should be handled with love and care,” Rothman added. “They deserve a safe, positive and nurturing environment that is free of fear, and pressure to ‘grow up’ and away from prejudice. We want them to know they are precious to us and to the Lord! Psalms 139 assures them God has a plan for their lives.” Later in the summer, 100 of the most needy children enrolled in the Sonshine Clubs are sent to Indian Hills summer camp for a week. “The children always are so excited to experience camp,” Rothman said. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them.” The entire Sunshine Haven experience is extremely rewarding to Rothman. “My husband built us a beach house in La Jolla where we moved, but every day the commute to see the children took 45 minutes or longer,” she said. “He asked

Held in June for the last eight years on Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, the latest edition held on June 16 attracted an estimated crowd of 7,000 surfing and music fans. It was a day of family fun in the sun, but also a day in which more than $100,000 was raised for Stand Up for Kids, an organization that supports homeless and abandoned kids. Switchfoot, one of the most successful bands to ever emerge from San Diego County, has a huge Christian following. It also has an impressive record of reaching out to those in need and giving back to the community. This unique events acts like a giant magnet by bringing together many like-minded individuals from various walks of life. Two of the primary organizers are Greg Kester and Michelle Raymundo of the Christian Surfers, Encinitas Chapter. “About 20 of us get together every Tuesday evening at 6:30 on Moonlight Beach,” Raymundo said. “Our mission is to reach out to what we call the “Lost Tribe” within the surfing community. These are people who have heard of God, but don’t know what it means to have a personal relationship with Him and to accept Christ into their hearts.” Their Moonlight Beach get-togethers offer food, surfing and Christian fellowship in a welcoming atmosphere. The group also visits Swami’s Beach on a monthly basis to reach out to the people that surf there. Once a year members of the group travel to the impoverished Dominican Republic where they surf, spread the word of Jesus Christ and team up with a local orphanage. In the four years that Raymundo has been involved, she has also traveled to the Philippines in order to organize a Christian Surfers chapter there.

“The Bro-Am has been very helpful in allowing us to have a booth each year at this event.,” Kester said. Several of us attend the North Coast Calvary Chapel, which is headed by Pastor Mark Foreman — the father of Switchfoot members Jon and Tim Foreman. “We like to do a couple of fund-raising events each year,” Kester continued. “One example is the pancake breakfast that we organized. We are also supported by our local church through their missions outreach. Sometimes we get private donations. Every little bit helps. We are really dedicated to building relationships throughout the surf community. If somebody has any interest, even if they don’t surf, they can become involved. Some of the members of our leadership are not surfers. They enjoy the ocean, the company, the beach lifestyle, interacting with people and of course sharing the gospel.” To find out more about the Encinitas Chapter of Christian Surfers International, visit www.facebook.com/pages/ Christian-Surfers-Encinitas. Tebow draws 26,000 to Qualcomm on Father’s Day Tim Tebow’s talk — actually more of an interview with Pastor David Jeremiah — was a perfect spiral pass to many of the 26,000 people who came to hear his Father’s Day message at Qualcomm Stadum. The event was sponsored by Shadow Mountain Community Church. At the conclusion, an altar call was given by Tebow, with so many people rushing forward that the church couldn’t keep track of a number. “We know it was in the hundreds, at least,” said Pastor David St. John, a longtime associate pastor at the church. “People ran onto the grass area and space was very crowded,” he added. “We had many people connect with our counselors by phone and e-mail and we’re following up. We’re very pleased. It was highly responsive from an eternal perspective.” Tebow spoke for about a half hour, sharing about his father’s influence on him, and the lack of good role models in the sports world. Traded from the Denver Broncos to the New York Jets this off-season, the quarterback generates a lot of publicity wherever he goes. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2007 while playing for the University of Florida, where his public display of his Christianity brought national attention. Tebow, 24, spoke at length about his football career and his faith. He urged men to be “real men” with their faith. ESPN commentator Chris Mortensen shared his testimony at the start of the program and then handled the offering for the event. Shadow Mountain, a Southern Baptist church of 7,000 in El Cajon, moved its regular Sunday services to the stadium for the opportunity to share the speaker with a larger audience.

Olympics provide unique ministry opportunity By AVA THOMAS At times, when Doug Shaw stands on the hill just outside Olympic Park in London, he can barely hear himself think. Construction buzzes and roars in preparation for the Summer Olympic Games, which start July 27. The work’s been going strong for years. Shaw can relate. He hasn’t stopped in ages either. As Olympics volunteer coordinator for Southern Baptists, he’s been in motion for months preparing Baptists to meet the tens of thousands of internationals coming to the United Kingdom this summer. “We are praying that many people from all over the world who may not have an op-

Simpson thankful for grace after winning emotional U.S. Open A tense finish to the U.S. Open may have been difficult on Webb Simpson’s emotions, but a boost to his prayer life. “I probably prayed more the last three holes than I’ve ever done in my life,” Simpson said after winning the tournament on June 17. “It helped me stay calm and get in with 2-under.” Simpson finished at 1-over for the tournament and left the course without ever holding the lead. But Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell faltered in their own

final rounds, leaving Simpson with his first major title. He watched from the clubhouse as McDowell missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole that would have tied Simpson. “He knows that his hope is not in golf,” said Ryan Carson, student pastor at Forest Hills Church in Charlotte, N.C., where Webb and his wife Dowd are members. “He knows that his hope is in the Lord, and that perspective, I think, has really kept him grounded.” Carson said that Simpson is not someone

“who just calls himself a Christian then just attends church.” “He’s got a passionate pursuit of Jesus going on,” Carson said. “It’s something that is really contagious. He steers conversations back to the Lord, back to Scripture, back to experiences that he’s had with the Lord or that other people have had. “He’s passionate about it,” Carson continued. “He’s not just a nominal Christian. He’s truly got a life that wants to honor and serve Jesus.” Last year, after his first PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., Simpson said he’d “be stupid not to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, because it was tough out there and I was nervous, and I felt his presence all day.” The day after winning the U.S. Open, Simpson took to Twitter to offer his gratitude. “Thanks to everyone for the support and encouragement,” he wrote. “Humbled to win the US Open!! Thankful to God for His grace in my life.” A native of Raleigh, N.C., Simpson attended Wake Forest University where he studied religion. – E.P. News

portunity to hear or respond to the gospel without being persecuted by their neighbors might have that opportunity while they’re here in London,” Shaw said. David Pile said he has the same hope. “I and others are hopeful that there will be lots of local events and lots of community engagement and we’ll be able to share and shine the love of Jesus with a bunch of people that we otherwise wouldn’t have come in contact with,” said Pile, Olympic and Paralympic Church Engagement Coordinator for the London Baptist Association. Shaw is expecting the help of about 400 Baptist volunteers from the States, and Pile is expecting the participation of hundreds of churches in England. Volunteers will help with festivals, face painting, handing out water and a range of other things. Some will assist churches in hosting big-screen events in parks, and sports teams will help with basketball and baseball events in neighborhoods around local churches. All of these efforts fall under the banner of More Than Gold, a joint effort of Christian churches of many denominations worldwide. More Than Gold helps Christians collaborate for ministry during major international sporting events such as the Olympics or the World Cup. And the group’s most famous ministry — pin trading — will be in full force during the 2012 games. “Pin trading is the biggest of the unofficial Olympic sports,” Shaw said, noting that thousands participate in the hobby. As part of More Than Gold, volunteers trade a More Than Gold pin that shares the gospel message. The pin is a good conversation piece and helps start gospel conversations in the area surrounding the Olympic Park, where blatant evangelism is not allowed, Shaw said. Pin trading is a traditional part of the Olympics atmosphere and, Shaw said, “There’s nothing wrong with talking with people about God.” – Baptist Press

Project Compassion relies on volunteers Bible curriculum taught in schools Two decades ago, Project Compassion began its ministry to the people of Mexico. Today, Project Compassion has been to 41 countries and has treated more than 1 million people through its clinics. In late July, another team will leave for Malawi, and in later months trips to India and the Philippines are set. “Together with Jack and Cindy Bradbury, we founded [Project Compassion] 19 years ago in Connection Church. We started with single-day trips and short five-day trips down to Mexico,” said Pastor Bob Maddux, one of the co-founders. Project Compassion began in 1991 with day trips to reach the people of Mexico. The goal was to provide free medical care where there was little or no care available. Compassion has responded to emergency requests and has provided disaster relief during events such as Hurricane Mitch, to earthquake relief in El Salvador, as well as setting up week-long clinics in developing nations. “Our entire organization is volunteer based; we have no paid positions,” Maddux said. “It is through God’s provision that we do what we do. We are supported by churches as well as individuals.” Reaching out to the people through free medical care, Project Compassion runs its clinics in all different environments, from the city to the mud-walled, thatched-roof

huts in Africa. Everyone is welcome to come on the trips, regardless of their medical experience or home location. Many people will fly to San Diego and continue to the mission field with the group as people from all over the U.S. join with the local forces at Project Compassion. Bringing all the medical equipment with them, Project Compassion also hosts a full pharmacy beyond the basic medical care. “While the people are waiting to meet with a medical provider, we have people teaching them about health and nutrition, and after they are treated and waiting for their prescription, we have people pray with them,” Maddux said. “In our trip to Guatemala a month ago, we went to San Marcos and saw over 1,100 people. At least 100 patients found healing in that time of prayer: hernias disappeared, cloudy vision cleared. We always combine prayer with the medical healthcare.” Volunteers work alongside orphanages, churches and other clinics so locals have the option of follow-up after the Christcentered outreach. Project Compassion will head to the Philippines in November. There is a need for volunteers with professional medical skills. Connection Church is in Poway and Project Compassion headquarters are in Rancho Bernardo. Visit www.projectcompassion.org or call (858) 485-9694.

Kristina Schwartz of Oceanside recently went to Israel on a missions trip with a team from Bethel Church in Redding. The trip included a four-day healing school where the group taught on the love of the Father, hearing God’s voice, and praying for the sick. By the end, people of different nations were dancing together and praying for each other. They went to the borders of Lebanon and Syria and prayed over their relationships with Israel. Some nights, the group was able to do street healings and evangelism, especially in Tel Aviv. She said there were countless numbers of miracles and hearts healed. From ears and eyes opening, to jaws coming into alignment, to back and stomach problems healed, headaches gone, fear and panic leaving, and more. Two of Kristina’s favorite stories are about a 3-year-old girl with “coke bottle” glasses who was always running around during the healing school. After praying, she received her vision and no longer needed glasses! The other is an Arab man, a new believer, who came and got prayer for cancer. The next day, she said, he came back to show papers from his doctor saying he was completely cancer free! “The presence of God was so strong over Israel,” she said. “It was an honor to minister in the Holy Land.”

f you’re a medical doctor in the U.K. and share your faith with a suffering patient after his appointment (with his permission), you can be brought up on charges and risk losing your medical license. If you’re a Christian university student in France, you can participate in many campus activities, but none of them will have anything to do with your faith because all religious organizations are banned from campus. If you’re a high school valedictorian in another country, you will likely be forbidden from mentioning God in your graduation speech. That nation is the United States of America. Now, imagine a country where Christians are invited into the schools. A program of ethical and moral education, based on the Bible, has been so successful that their Congress passed a resolution allowing this curriculum to be taught in every K-12 school. That country is Bolivia. The name of the school curriculum is Program of Moral Orientation (POM in Spanish), and is run by Mission Generation. Former San Diegan Rocky Malloy and his wife Joske began the ministry in 1999 when God gave them a heart and a plan to reach entire nations for Jesus. Rocky took his inspiration from Acts 19: 9-10, “… reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.” Malloy reasoned that God used Paul to change the entire world, without purchasing a single building. Instead, the early believers used existing networks to bring the gospel to people. So that’s what Mission Generation did. That very year, they launched a pilot program in three schools. The results were so powerful, that soon 44 schools were lined up to receive instruction. Since then, the results have been glorious. School superintendents have said that without exception, POM has led to less truancy, less teen pregnancy, lower gang participation, and better grades, as students see their schoolwork aligned with a purpose for their lives. From that humble beginning, God has blessed Mission Generation with: • 300,000 students with textbooks.

YOUR MISSION BILL SMITH • 30,000 teachers trained to teach the curriculum. • 7,000 parents trained with a strategy to raise their children. • 642 volunteers certified as teachers. Can the ministry really be evangelistic if it is allowed in the schools? Judge from Mission Generation’s stated purpose: “Mission Generation is a non-profit, Bible-based character development program used in public and private schools (K-12) to bring students, teachers, and parents to salvation and train them in the practical application of the Word of God.” We know that God blesses the efforts of those who cultivate in difficult spiritual ground. Yet Jesus also pointed out that some fields are “white unto harvest.” The spiritual seed-planting in Bolivia is being wonderfully blessed. Both short-term and longer term missionaries have been used by God. Recently, San Diegans Bill Mattingly and Tom Stephenson went to Bolivia. They came to reach kids in the schools and went home happy knowing they left changed lives. They shared how God had given them a purpose and allowed them to use their gifts to bless others. Right there in the schools, they were able to share their testimonies and ask students to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior. To find out more, check out www.missiongeneration.org. If you are a current or retired teacher, consider attending an information meeting on July 24 at 11:30 a.m. in Poway. For information, contact Bill Mattingly at [email protected] or call him at 760-591-7525. o Bill Smith attends Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido.

“And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 4:19 (NIV)

Giving finally rebounding for many churches Biblically responsible investing eyed ‘State of the Plate’ survey shows giving increased last year, budgets up, electronic giving on rising, financial transparency — except Pacific Coast

Churches suffered from plummeting donations after the recession began in 2008. But in the past year, a majority of congregations experienced giving increases because of a better economy, higher attendance and more church teaching on giving. Trends in 2011 included higher budgets, which brought more church spending on staff salaries, missions, facilities and benevolence. Trends also included greater attention to fiscal transparency and board governance and a rise in electronic giving through technological tools, such as cell phone applications and automatic bank withdrawals. The fourth annual “State of the Plate” constituency survey of more than 1,360 congregations revealed that 51 percent of churches saw giving increase in 2011, up from 43 percent in 2010 and 36 percent in 2009. The survey was a collaborative research project sponsored by MAXIMUM Generosity; Christianity Today, publisher of Church Finance Today and Leadership Journal; and Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability. The survey asked pastors, staff and leaders of all church sizes, theological leanings and regions to report on their church giving, budgeting and generosity initiatives, as well as programs to help families negatively affected by the economy. “Charities and churches were hit hard by the recession, but many are now beginning to see increased giving,” said Brian Kluth, author, speaker and founder of the “State of the Plate” research. “A better economy, more Bible teaching on finances and generosity, and a growing number of online giving options are helping many churches rebound financially.” Giving increases were greatest among larger churches, with more than 70 percent of megachurches — 2,000 or more in weekend attendance — experiencing giving increases last year. Heartland states saw the biggest rebound, with nearly 55 percent of churches experiencing giving increases. For three of the last four years, Pacific Coast churches continued to struggle

financially. In 2011, 38 percent experienced giving declines. Among churches that saw giving increases, 50 percent attributed the rise to greater attendance. Forty-two percent said it was because people gave more after their church conducted financial/ generosity teaching initiatives, such as sermons, classes, seminars or distributed devotionals about the subject. Church budgets, consequently, are up, and churches are allocating the extra funds to staff pay raises (40.3 percent), missions (36.5 percent), church buildings (35.3 percent) and benevolence (31.1 percent). And the way churches receive donations has shifted from the traditional “envelope packets” toward electronic giving, such as cell phone applications, automatic bank withdrawals and lobby kiosks. “As giving has improved for many churches nationwide, this survey shows many have made budget decisions that directly care for people,” said Matt Branaugh, director of editorial for Christianity Today’s Church Management Team, a survey sponsor. “Many churches increased their spending for missions and benevolence — two ways churches work to meet the needs of people locally and globally. And pay raises for staff and pastors were a move to care for their own, after many churches were forced to freeze or cut salaries during the recession.” The “State of the Plate” shows a significant number of churches actively use a variety of practices and procedures to ensure financial transparency and accountability. For instance, 92 percent make their financial statements available upon request to their members; 89 percent provide copies of their annual budget to their congregation or make them available upon request. Eighty-six percent of church boards are made up of five or more people, with at least three of those people not a pastor or staff member, or related to either. “It is important that churches properly self-govern in financial matters, implementing strong financial accountability practices.” said Dan Busby of ECFA.

Beginning in the late 1970s, large institutions and government in the United States began divesting their money from South Africa because of the nation’s racially segregating policies. Apartheid (from the Afrikaans word for apartness) was the social and political policy enforced by white minority governments in South Africa. Although officially legalized in 1948, the discriminatory structure developed centuries earlier. The American divestment sent a strong message to the Apartheid regime, telling them that they had lost financial, political, and moral support of the international community. Anti-apartheid activist and former South African President Nelson Mandela hailed it as a catalyst to help end apartheid. Today, new battles are being fought. Large institutional investors and pensions have aggressively divested from Sudan and Iran, to combat genocide and terrorism respectively. And if we think the battles are only raging in far away lands, we would be wrong. Organizations like the American Family Association and Life Decisions International are organizing corporate boycotts right in our own backyard against companies supporting anti-family values. In return, conservative family values are often misconstrued as hateful and intolerant. Our country is at a crossroads of social issues, and everyone has an argument. The battles are fierce. Big business is involved. Social liberals shrewdly utilize money to impel their convictions upon society. And, despite the success of a few boycotts, many would argue that conservatives are far behind in supporting their convictions with their money. One part of the answer could come through a small but growing movement toward Biblically Responsible Investing (BRI). In short, BRI is based on investing in companies that positively reflect a biblical worldview, or otherwise, do not oppose one. Nancy Currid, director of research for the Biblically Responsible Investing Institute (BRII), explains, “Within Christian circles (BRI) is a concept that is growing at an increasing rate, and could be a tool to assist

PRINCIPLES OF PROSPERITY ANTHONY SAFFER Christians in Kingdom living.” A little history: The emergence of BRI is actually more of a rebirth. Many civilizations, primarily due to faith-based convictions, have imposed investment parameters, including the Jews of biblical times. The Quakers were among the first to bring a preference toward social investing to the United States. Although Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) gained its roots from biblical or at least faith-based precepts, SRI has angled toward a liberal agenda post-Vietnam War. Thus, demand for Biblically Responsible Investing was reborn. Rusty Leonard, CEO and founder of Stewardship Partners, a thriving money management firm, is one of those laying an apostle-like foundation for BRI. “It is our hope that over time, we and other firms like ours may be able to gather enough assets under management to be able to adequately offset the negative impact on our culture that the many established and liberallyminded Socially Responsible Investing funds are having in the marketplace. As things presently stand, the Christian message is barely being heard in the financial and corporate marketplaces, but our voice is growing as investors are seeking to align their investments with their values.” Intrigued? Stay tuned over the next two months as I cover more on BRI, including why the industry could significantly impact our culture, yet will require a deliberate, careful approach. business proverbs

Do you always provide correct information to your boss? King Solomon observed, “The king is pleased with righteous lips; he loves those who speak honestly” (Proverbs 16:13, NLT). One of the most difficult tasks for a business owner or manager is to obtain correct information from staff. Most of us would rather tell the boss what we believe he wants to hear, rather than speaking the truth, even if the truth is painful. Long term you will be more valuable to your boss and company when you always speak the truth. Most bosses don’t shoot the messenger, so speak up! o Business Proverbs is a free daily e-mail service. Coffee, Jesus go hand-in-hand for new company By RICK MONROE It may not be an addiction, but Christians sure love their coffee. An Escondido man has a perfect solution for people to enjoy their morning brew and spend time with God. Mitch Rennix believes the two can — and should — be combined. In other words, pray and read your Bible first thing in the morning with a cup of java from His Coffee Co., a business he started last year. The company markets its brand worldwide and next month is opening a small retail storefront and a takeout coffee and tea bar in its warehouse at 545 Opper St., Escondido, just a stone’s throw away from Nordahl Road and Mission Avenue. Why start a Christian coffee company? According to Rennix, it was a God moment: “I was sitting at an intersection waiting for the light to change when I found myself asking God, ‘Lord what do you want me to do to provide for my family and honor you at the same time?’ As I drove across the intersection, my attention was drawn to a little coffee shop on the corner, and as clearly as two people talking to one another, the Lord said, ‘go and sell Christian coffee!’” “That sort of thing rarely happens to me. We all get ‘urgings’ from the Holy Spirit when we pray, but this was so much more.” Rennix said he became excited and when he returned home he immediately sat before his computer to search about “Christian coffee.” He found several coffee companies mentioned that they were

Christians or they did some Christian things with their profits, but nowhere was there a truly Christian-label line of coffee products. Through more prayer, Rennix said it was revealed to him that he needed to be the one to offer such a product to the world. “My prayer has always been, ‘Lord if You open the doors, I’ll do my best to walk through them and invite others to do the same.’” At that point he shared his dream with his wife Lidia. “I did a very poor job of sharing my enthusiasm with clarity,” he said. “I’ll never forget, she looked at me, wondering how to respond to a dream so lacking in important details. Details like, ‘Why do you think we need to open a coffee shop in this economy?’ I quickly explained that it’s not a coffee shop — just coffee. God says go sell His coffee.” Lidia soon helped fill in many of the missing details, and they began to believe there could be a real opportunity. What should the coffee company be named? Lidia looked at Mitch, pointed to the heavens with her index finger, and said, ”It’s all His, so why don’t we call it His Coffee Company?” Another door had just opened. As one door after another was opening quickly, the Lord made it clear to Mitch and Lidia that He was with them. “He sent us amazing people who liked the idea and offered their input and energy with regard to sourcing, packaging, labeling, marketing, and inviting others to lend their support by purchasing and sharing the products with their friends,”

Rennix said. The gourmet coffee that they sell was considered by many to be the best coffee that they had ever tasted, but always, people looked at the packaging and loved the artwork that is on the front, as well as the Christian statement imprinted on the back panel. It was marketed at church festivals and street fairs, as well as Christian stores and functions. What brought the most smiles were the biblical names of each blend. Their bold roast, for those who like a little darker blend of coffee is called “Raise the Dead.” A little mellower is “Holy Grounds,” described as very smooth and satisfying, yet not as dark as “Raise the Dead.” The decaf is called “Be Still” (and know that I am God). The last of the current coffee blends is “Vanilla from Heaven.” Premium teas are also offered. “If a product is added to our lineup, it has passed the core team evaluation process,” Rennix said. “There are about a dozen of us that guide this company, and we sit down and brew up something new and look at one another and very scientifically say, ‘Nope, that’s not it!’ — or on other more rare occasions, we all smile at one another and proclaim, ‘Now that’s what we’re talking about!’ It’s all done as a shared experience, which is why God created coffee and tea in the first place.” While all this sounds like fun and marketing in the name of the Lord, Rennix said, above all, that they consider themselves as missionaries to change the world for the better. “We want everyone who drinks coffee or tea to spend that first 10-15 minutes that it takes to drink one cup, getting to

Now, as a way to grow closer to Him you are encouraged to find a local Bible-believing church to attend. Daily read the Word of God to grow in your relationship with Jesus. If you have prayed this prayer, let us know and we can help direct you to a local church in your area. Call Good News, etc. at 760-724-3075.

Spirit West Coast . . . Continued from page 1 but many are concerned about their future and are living for their next payday. People pull back from non-essentials,” he explained. Neither Del Mar or Monterey festivals will be held in 2013 unless there is a financial breakthrough, the promoter said in an interview after the May 25-27 dates in Del Mar. “What happened with the Del Mar attendance wasn’t a complete surprise,” Robberson said. “Internet sales we were tracking were down and it all had to do with the economy. Most organizations would hold onto their final dollars, but we decided to go ahead and spend what we had for the ‘spiritual value’ — the investment in people. Looking back, the decision to impact people eternally wasn’t a bad decision.” Each night’s Main Stage message was a “rock-solid presentation of the gospel,” Robberson said, with significant results.” Giving altar calls were Luis Palau on Friday, Nick Vujicic on Saturday and Bob Lenz on Sunday. Total salvations each night exceeded 200, with an even greater number of rededications, the promoter said. “We implemented a new text messaging system for those who wished to indicate a spiritual decision at the time of the altar calls,” he noted. “Respondents would text a number and then a series of return texts would instruct them of the next step in their new spiritual journey.” The main entertainment included Newsboys, TobyMac, Tenth Avenue North and Family Force 5. “We miraculously recovered from the unexpected and late cancellation of MercyMe by securing Newsboys to take their place,” Robberson said. But for now, Robberson needs a financial miracle in order for the festival to return in 2014. The focus is on rebuilding the financial structure, he said, so one or both festivals can return. “We’ve always been a non-profit organization, but we never focused on contributions.” That is changing. “We have a broad landscape of ‘friends’ who have been impacted by these spiritually-driven events and who believe in the ministry deeply,” he explained. “We’re asking for donations and pledges and trusting God that His people will step up and provide the resources necessary for another Spirit West Coast.” It’s clear that ticket sales alone will not sustain SWC, he said, and the goal to relaunch another festival is about $200,000. “That sounds like a lot of money — and it is — but if we break that down into $500 increments and then looking for 400 people to contribute, it can happen. “We would like to keep the same caliber of music and have enough money left to lower ticket prices.” Were there other factors contributing to Del Mar’s attendance decline? “Having it over the Memorial Day weekend poses a problem,” Robberson said. “The weather is still usually cool and most students are still in school. The festival is a summer thing, with people traveling here with their family or youth group.” Please, if you want to do something to help keep Good News, Etc. effective, you can do two things: 1. Pray for the newspaper. 2. Support our advertisers. – The Publishers

He also noted it seems like there are not as many youth groups making a trip like this. “The culture is changing,” Robberson said, “with not as many church groups making it a priority.” The Del Mar festival has always been on the Memorial Day weekend, with the Monterey event later in the summer. Robberson wouldn’t commit to stating a year to expect SWC to return to Del Mar or Monterey. In fact, he said they would even consider other sites. “Del Mar is still a beautiful property for all we want to do, but we have to be open to other ideas,” he said.
