President’s

Message

It was just a little more than two years ago in Tallahassee that I agreed to begin this journey with FSMTA. Since then, time has gone by quickly in anticipation of stepping up to the office of President. I have been inspired by the dedication to this organization, the enthusiasm, and the ongoing search for excellence that is demonstrated by the members of FSMTA. I am grateful that so many of you have given to me your guidance and advice. I am always amazed how such very busy people find the time to contribute so much of themselves. I am honored to take on this challenge. What a wonderful and exciting way to begin our year. Our Commissioned composer, Shawn Hundley, was selected to be MTNA Distinguished Composer of Year. This is quite an honor for Shawn. How exciting it will be to hear his composition played at the National

Conference, and know that he is from Florida. We all wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors. You can read more about him in Joan Mank’s article regarding the commissioned composer. I have just returned from the Southern Division Competitions and meeting. What a privilege to hear such outstanding talent from the Southern Division states. I am excited to report that we have an Elementary Composition winner. Congratulations go to Clara Nguyen, student of Donald Waxman. She will represent the Southern Division in the national competition. For the complete results of all the competitions, see the article in this newsletter. I would like to begin my term with a request. It involves every one of you. Our past president, Marc Hebda, has been a stellar example of an excellent president. His leadership has been outstanding! Because of his superior performance, Marc has been one of two people nominated to the position

by Adrienne LeBlanc

of Southern Director-Elect. The state of Florida should be so proud to have one of our members singled out for this position. Watch for voting instructions in the upcoming edition of the AMT and cast your vote for Marc. We will also be sending an email reminder. There are nine states in the southern division, so the competition for votes is very high. If elected, Marc will serve for two years as Division Director-Elect, followed by two years as a member of the MTNA Board of Directors as the Southern Division Director. Please take a few minutes and vote for Marc as directed in the next AMT magazine. We are excited to have nominated Sue Colvert as the Florida Fellow for 2012. Sue has been a shining light in our organization. She and her husband were deeply involved in FSMTA for many years. Please read the MTNA foundation article in this newsletter to learn more about her and why she was chosen for this honor, and find out how you can donate to our Foundation Fund in her name. continued on page 2

During the summer, all of you received an email from Benjamin Caton, MTNA National President, announcing the resolution to discontinue the woodwinds, brass, strings and voice competitions, effective with the 2013-2014 competitions. I immediately began receiving emails from our members who were astonished that in the time of encouraging collaborative arts, our organization was going to eliminate the embodiment of this endeavor. At our executive board meeting in November, the Board agreed that I should compose a letter from Florida expressing our deep concern and worries about how this decision might affect FSMTA. Very soon, copies of letters came from almost every state. Only one state was in agreement with the Board’s decision. The other letters all stated vehemently that discontinuing these competitions would be harmful to MTNA, the teachers and the students. Soon, I received a notice that the State Presidents Advisory Council was being called together to discuss this issue. A conference call was arranged and 41 states participated. After much discussion, the following motion was made: The MTNA State Presidents Advisory Council urges the Board of Directors to rescind the recent decision to eliminate the MTNA string, woodwind, brass and vocal performance competitions. This decision seems to work against the spirit of the recent “Year of Collaboration” and “Each One Reach One” campaigns as well as the mission of the organization. It is hoped that the board will consider the opinions and suggestions put forth in recent weeks and months by state associations and will seek creative, cost-effective ways to run these competitions and to increase opportunities for nonpianists within MTNA. The board of directors met a short time later, after which each state president received the following from Benjamin Caton: Each member of the Board is very thorough and conscientious. They gave full attention to your transmission. As you know, the competition decision was rescinded at the December meeting. We are very happy at this outcome, and hope that the problems associated with the competitions will be worked out so that our students will continue to benefit from the experience gained from such events. In this New Year of 2012, I am confident that we can all strive to carry on our mission of providing the very best for our students of all levels. I feel surrounded by such capable people, not just on the Board but also in our general membership. So many of you have been willing to accept leadership positions as Board members, and I thank you for doing so. Because of your efforts, our many programs can be continued, always striving for the highest level of excellence. As your president, I will try to be open and available to you for any concerns you may have. As MTNA has encouraged us to become more collaborative, I hope that mindset will continue as we all work together in a harmonious way for FSMTA, our teachers and our students.

2011 FSMTA State Conference by Anne McLean, 2011 FSMTA Conference Chair

The Florida State Music Teachers enjoyed a varied and successful State Conference at the Daytona Beach Hilton Oceanfront Resort last November 3-6. The “tone” was set by the outstanding Foundation Gala on Thursday, November 2, at the Daytona Shores Hotel, which preceded a weekend full of wide-ranging presentations and mini-recitals. Mr. Alvin Davis, the 2012 Florida Department of Education/Macy’s Teacher of the Year recipient, graciously appeared as Guest Speaker to the First General Session, and later participated in the Independent and Collegiate Teachers Forum, “CounterPoint”. Many delegates felt that Forrest Kinney’s Showcase Presentation of Frederick Harris Music Company’s “Pattern Play” was one of the highlights of the conference. Long after the conference, teachers were still placing orders for more of the “Pattern Play” series. Michelle Sisler of “Keys to Imagination” also delighted the audience with her Technology Showcase presentation. In the past, some had expressed a desire to have more sessions relating to senior piano repertoire and SATURDAY BANQUET instruments other than piano. Therefore, the conference also featured Dr. Rebecca Penneys, a master piano teacher, Dr. Kimberly Saunders Randell, the NATS president and dynamic vocal coach, Dr. Yonitani, the acclaimed violin virtuoso, and Bethune-Cookman University’s dance ensemble, “Orchesis”. We were also treated to some outstanding entertainment - some “light” (Daytona State College “Pops Choir”, the “Energy! Ensemble” children’s choir, and “Key of C” Singers), and some serious; we shall long remember the stellar concerts of Friday and Saturday, November 4th and 5th. Stetson University’s Symphonic ENERGY! ENSEMBLE Orchestra with Maestro Anthony Hose accompanied the talented young State Concerto Winners with great sensitivity on Friday, while on Saturday evening the incomparable British pianist Howard Shelley dazzled us with works of Hummel, Schubert and Mozart, all accompanied by the brilliant Central Florida Chamber Ensemble, Ayako Yonetani, Liviu Onofrei, Jesus Alfonzo, David Bjella, Don Michael Hill and Alyssa Griggs. THE PRE-COLLEGE CHAMBER MUSIC COMPETITION

CONGRATULATIONS to Shawn

by Liz Kiebler, Chair The Pre-College Chamber Music Competition will be held at Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City, Tampa, May 11-12, 2012. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2012. The applications can be found online at fmta.org. This competition falls under FSMTA’s competitive events. This is a prime opportunity to coach students who are making music together. Most of us who have a B.M. and/or an M.M. had to prepare at least one Chamber recital in order to graduate. If this is important enough to be included in a college curriculum, then it is important enough for all of us to teach to younger students. It is fun, educational, and there is a cash prize. Remember, there are lots of combinations with which to work. For pianists, a good resource is The Piano in Chamber Ensemble, an annotated guide by Maurice Hinson. Only one teacher out of the chamber group needs to be a member of FSMTA. PLEASE REMEMBER all members of the group MUST be Pre-College students. If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail liz kiebler at [email protected]. Page 9

The winner of the Local Presidents award will receive a certificate, plaque and a $250 check. The winner of the LeRoy Greenspan Memorial award will receive a certificate, plaque and a $500 check.

The applications are due by March 1, 2012. If more than one application is received from any county, those applications will be sent to the District Community Service Chairperson where the applications will be judged and one county winner will be selected. This process must be completed and returned to the state chairperson by April 1, 2012. After all county winners have been selected, I will contact each Local MTA treasurer to request the $35 application fee. If the county winner lives in a county that is not included within the local association to which the teacher is a member, it is the responsibility of the teacher to pay the $35 application fee. Your assistance at the local and district levels to encourage students to apply is very much appreciated. In 2011 there were a total of six applicants. It would be terrific to have a greater number of applicants for spring 2012. For further information, contact Martha Stubbs at [email protected] or at (850) 321-5656.

In a time when we are all asked to consider making monetary donations to different charitable organizations, foundations and associations, I ask you to remember your state foundation when doing so. There are many way to contribute to FSMTF including a donation, becoming a ‘Friend” of FSMTF, or becoming members of the Tribute Club or Heritage Club. Details can be found under the FSMTF Quick Link on the FSMTA website and I encourage your generosity. I began this article by thanking Paulette Kilts and I shall close by doing the same. In December I accepted the resignation of Sheron White as Foundation Treasurer. Paulette Kilts has graciously agreed to serve as interim Treasurer until the end of the current FY (June 30th). FSMTF thanks Paulette for her continued service to the Foundation!

UPPER PINELLAS MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION WINS LOCAL ASSOCIATION OF THE YEAR AWARD FSMTA's Local Association of the Year Award seeks to recognize those organizations that uphold the highest standards in music pedagogy, participate in state and national programs and conventions, and go above and beyond the norm in such areas as programs for students, their community, and member education and support. A shining example of such a local association is the Upper Pinellas Music Teachers Association which has a history of excellence, having won this award in 2006. It is particularly gratifying that this award coincides with their fortieth anniversary. Their commitment to all aspects of their organization deserves commendation and their level of activity is dizzying! They presented six student recitals, two outreach recitals, and a member recital, in addition to holding four competitions, two festivals, and District Student Day. All this in one year! But wait, that's not all!! They also hosted four speakers/performers at monthly meetings, a great way to encourage attendance and provide member education and support. They produced a teaching video and even published a book review. As if that's not enough, they increased their membership by 10% and improved their local website by adding a membership link that enabled new and prospective members to download UPMTA, FSMTA and MTNA applications. Of particular note, they instituted a new scholarship of $100 each for high school seniors who had studied with an UPMTA teacher their entire four years of high school. Sixteen seniors received these scholarships. They also produce a handbook, for which they increased sponsorship by 20%, a yearbook, and a monthly newsletter in which they highlighted former and present members of their association in honor of their 40th anniversary. Exceptionally impressive are their organizational objectives which are to: • Raise standards of music teaching through educational programs and exchange of ideas. • Provide opportunities for broader music experiences for teachers and students. • Cultivate fraternal relations among members of our profession. They fulfilled these objectives magnificently. In the words of their former president, Talia Dillahey, “This anniversary serves as a testament to the fact that musical education plays an essential role in the social and musical development of our students in Pinellas County,” Kudos to UPMTA for making it so!

NOTICE OF BY-LAWS CHANGE by Maria Santilli, Constitution and By-laws Revision Chair FSMTA members approved a change in the FSMTA By-laws at the FSMTA State Conference Second General Session last November. The change was enacted in order to clarify the previous language. Article XIX, Code of Ethics, Section 4, subsection g, now reads as follows [change in bold script]: • Teachers will not accept a student who is or has been studying the same subject with another teacher until relations with the previous teacher have been terminated and his/her just indebtedness paid in full. It shall be the responsibility of the "new" teacher to contact the previous teacher to confirm that the above has been done. Page 12

Byrd Piano Ensemble and Gray Perry Young Collegiate Piano Award Competitions

District Student Day Update

by Norma Mastrogiacomo, Chair

It’s time for my annual reminder to teachers about two excellent “non-concerto” events at the FSMTA spring competitions. Last year we had a very fine group of contestants, and I am again looking forward to hearing some exciting and interesting talents. The Byrd Competition is for piano ensembles, either two piano or piano duet. There are two categories, Pre-college (8-15 minutes) and College (up to a maximum of 20 minutes), each of which play a mini-program of their choice. Repertoire can be one or both types of ensemble. The Gray Perry is for college students in their first two years of study in a Florida school. Repertoire is 2-3 memorized pieces from contrasting style periods (up to a maximum of 20 minutes). Both these competitions are held along with the concerto competitions. The dates are May 11-12th at Hillsborough Community College’s Ybor City campus in Tampa. Applications must be postmarked/dated by March 31, 2012. Forms and information are available on line, or contact me at: Norma Mastrogiacomo 2809 St. Leonard Dr. Tallahassee, FL 32312 Tel: (850) 386-8730 E-mail: [email protected]

by Tanya Brooks, NCTM FSCTM VP for FSMTA Non-Competitive Events IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO ALL MEMBERS!!! We now have two new sources to help us with the theory aspects of Student Day! First, Christine Hermanson, the originator of Music Learning Community, has correlated our Student Day Syllabus through Level Five on her website below. Some of you met her at our Conference in November. [email protected] MusicLearningCommunity.com 104 Mackintosh Lane O'Fallon, MO 63368 636-240-3660 Second, Australians Peter Lee and Tim Wilson have been hard at work the past few months correlating our syllabus to their theory and ear training software, Musition and Auralia. You may see their ad in this newsletter. A special thank you to all for their help!! Please visit the websites. A few reminders for Student Day: A Checklist for Student Day Chairmen as well as detailed instruction sheets on how to fill out the Interactive Student Day Tally Sheet and the Interactive Student Day Leftover Items Tally Sheet is posted online. These are the only two sheets that must be sent to me, plus one check (made out to FSMTA and sent to the State treasurer) for the certificates you used at $1 each. (You do not send money for the medals as these are paid for by the state and not the local associations.) DO NOT POSTAL MAIL THESE TALLY SHEETS! THEY MUST BE EMAILED TO ME ONLY!!!

Is No News Good News? It has been said that “No News is Good News.” Whereas this may be true in some cases, it is not exactly true in the case of not receiving applications for FSMTA or MTNA Certification. Some news, in the form of applications for certification, would be better news. This would be better news especially for the persons sending the applications for this would mean that they would be on the way to receiving the benefits of certification. For one benefit: People do look on the Internet as they are searching for a music teacher. Do yourself a big favor and send in some better news to this chairman. If you are interested in certification I will look forward to hearing from you. Helen Hartman Dingus, FSMTA Certification Chairman 610 Camborne Avenue, NE Fort Walton Beach, FL 32547-1703 Phone: 850-862-2731 Email: [email protected]

AND - Amy has posted a picture of a properly prepared Student Day Certificate. In working with chairmen last year, I realized that there are many different ideas about how Student Day is actually done. I tried to be very specific on the detailed instruction sheets and the certificate so hopefully you will understand exactly who qualifies for the State Medal, how to fill out the sheets, etc. Student Day Chairmen only: Adjudication forms and tests It is imperative that you try to get these tally sheets to me (Tanya Brooks) within a week after your event. The longer you wait, the harder it is to obtain accurate information. *A note from Webmaster, Amy Turon“The way the submission process will work now is that the interactive PDF file will need to be saved to the user’s computer hard drive, and then sent to Tanya as an email attachment. I know that some members may have difficulty with this process, so she may have to help walk you through it. Also, I posted that if anyone is using Google Docs for viewing internet files, they will first have to download the original document (PDF file) in order to access the interactive function of the PDF. I realize that this is all new, and people get frustrated until they figure out how to do it, but Tanya will be glad to talk with you by phone if you have a problem. Please call her at 850-769-5612. She is on CST.”

Have a great Student Day this year!!! Page 14
