FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1.) The Jewish authorities were ANGRY because Jesus had “violated” Sabbath, and, they were furious because He claims equality w/God. 2.) This passage expands on earlier question- “Who is the man?” (v12) I am equal with God v 19-20 I am the giver of life v 21 I am the final judge v 22-23 I will determine eternal destiny v 24 I will raise the dead v 25-29 I am always doing the will of God v 30 3.) In vs 19-30 Jesus lays out a case so His WORDS and ACTIONS will be correctly understood. He clearly wants us to understand who He is. 4.) v 19 “Truly, truly” – is the STRONGEST, clearest, possible way of saying “you heard me correctly”. What you hear is TRUTH! 5.) v 19 When Jesus says- “the Son can do nothing of himself…”, He is clarifying that He always acts in perfect harmony with, and subordination to the Father's will and purpose because they are equal in NATURE and equal in OBJECTIVE.

11.) Vs 25 speaks more about the “SPIRITUAL” resurrection which Jesus also brings than it does about the Physical resurrection which is future. 12.) Vs 26 The Son can give life because, like the Father, He has life. No one can GIVE what he himself lacks 13.) The Bible teaches the dead will be raised in sequence and mentions two specific resurrections: 1st- righteous dead at the second coming. The souls of the righteous dead are now in heaven w/Christ (2 Cor. 5:6–8) 2nd- unrighteous dead – at the Great White Throne judgment at the end of the Millennial Kingdom. The “wicked dead” are now in torment in Hades.
GREEK WORDS USED TODAY Thaumazo (thou-mad'-zo) to wonder
FOR THE WEEK AHEAD Did Jesus ever say He is GOD?
6.) Only someone EQUAL to God can do all God does. 7.) v 21 packs a punch for those whom Jesus is speaking directly to; In the eyes of the ancients, 3 specific powers belong to God alone, calledThe THREE GREAT KEYS:
the key to open the heavens and give rain (Deut 28:12) the key to open the womb and give conception (Gen 30:22) the key to open the grave and raise the dead (Ezk 37:13)
There IS no more significant question than WHO IS JESUS? There is no middle ground to the issue, what is your answer?
8.) Jesus declared He is EQUAL to God because He possesses judicial and executive authority. All judgment belongs to Christ and His judgment will be the very same as the Father’s judgment. 9.) To the Jew, only Jehovah God is- “…the Judge of all the earth” Gn 18:25 NO ONE would dare apply that title to himself, but Jesus did! 10.) Vs 23 Because He is the JUDGE, that fact alone should cause men to honor Him. It’s only fitting that if He is equal in nature, works, power, judgment, he would be accorded equal HONOR to God the Father.
