Nau mai, hoki mai Dear Parents, Yesterday all the students got to watch the NED Show. As well as entertaining the students with his Yo Yo tricks, the show had a powerful message for us all. Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best. He talked about how making mistakes can be the best way to learn. I have talked before about essential skills for success - resilience and determination are just two of them. Yo Yo’s are for sale before and after school, outside the Mt Thomas Room until next Tuesday. I heard a quote last week from Sir Alex Ferguson, the former coach of Manchester United. He made the point that there is nothing better than a player hearing “well done”, (the two best words ever invented in sport) and that there is no need to use superlatives. He goes on to say that there is no room for criticism on the training field. I do think we underestimate the power of words and the profound impact they have on people of all ages. Simple words like “well done” used at the right time are magic words.

want to find out more information on the programme, the assessors will be available after school on Monday in the library.

Reporting Year 4-8 Goal Setting Your child will be bringing home their updated goal setting sheets today. Goals that were set in Term 1 have been reviewed and updated and if appropriate, new goals have been set. The sheet also provides an indication of your child's progress towards the National Standards.  Please contact your child's teachers should you want further information about his/her progress and achievement. National Monitoring Study of Student Achievement (NMSSA) Year 8’s Next week the Year 8 students will be participating in the NMSSA. The purpose of the NMSSA is to get a broad picture of student achievement in New Zealand. It does this by assessing representative samples of New Zealand school students at successive points in time. Our students will be assessed in Science, Physical Education and Health. Please ensure they come prepared for physical exercise on Monday and Tuesday. If any parents

Included in the newsletter are summaries of topics that each team will be engaging in this term. As mentioned, the speeches will be the main focus for the students, however, in the second half of the term, the focus will shift to Sexuality Education for all students. Sexuality education is part of Health and Physical Education learning area of the New Zealand Curriculum. Later in the term we will hold an information session for parents Enjoy the rest of the week. Ian, our NED Show presenter with NED alongside him. Team North showing their appreciation of the show.

Team Summaries for the term Team South For the first few weeks of the term we will be doing a mini unit on Butterflies in line with our environmental focus. We will be looking at Shape and Transformation for Maths for the first 2-3 weeks before heading into a Numeracy focus. We will also be focusing on our Oral Presentations with our Teach the Teacher presentations in the first half of the term and in the second half of the term we will be doing a Health Unit focusing on Sexuality. Team North Our focus for the first 6 weeks will be oral language presentations. The Year 4s will be working on 'The Power is Within Us’ as their presentation topic. The Year 2 and 3s will be 'Teaching the Teacher' - a great opportunity for them to become the experts and teach the team what they know! For the second half of the term, we will be investigating 'Sexuality Education' as part of our Health Curriculum. This will be underpinned by the four concepts of 'Hauora' - health promotion, positive attitudes, core values and a social perspective. We will then spend time learning about specific parts of the body that are associated with power such as muscles, the brain. Team West This term in Team West our main focus will be The Power is Within Us - Speech writing and presentation. We will be running this alongside our science focus of Our Brilliant Bodies. We will be focusing on the main body systems: skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems. Finishing the term we will be changing our focus to puberty, as we are required to teach this as part of the Health curriculum-further information will be provided before this unit is taught. At the end of the term we will be attending and performing at the North Canterbury Kapahaka Festival, this will lead onto our final focus for the term. Students will be learning some basic commands, greetings and farewells in Te Reo with a big focus on Kapahaka. We will be undergoing a novel study on the book “Deadly Feathers” by Des Hunt and will be diving deep into the story and completing art relating back to the book. Team East Our main focus will be The Power is Within Us - Speech writing and presentation. The Science focus will be about ‘Our Brilliant Bodies’ focusing on the main body Systems: skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive systems, finishing with Pubertal change at the end of the term Cultural Responsiveness, te reo, greetings and basic commands, art, values and working towards the North Canterbury Kapahaka Festival will be other topics to touch on. We have set up last term “Cluster Connections” with children at North Loburn, Ashley and Sefton schools. Each child has been assigned a buddy and so far we have introduced ourselves by sharing a document. This term we will be sharing our learning with our buddy. We do not have Technology this term as our timetable has changed. However, we will be getting ready for the technology changes in term 4, where we will attend Tuesday all day and Wednesday morning. Here, the children have a choice of what they would like to do. This means we will spend time this term deciding and researching in more depth. We will contact you soon with further information about the changes.

Teach the Teacher (NE to Yr 3) Year 0, 1, 2 and 3 children will be preparing a 2-3 minute oral presentation on something they are good at or are interested in. Some ideas could be “How to make a paper plane”, “All about dinosaurs”, “How to train a pet”, “All about bikes” etc. Your child must be able to teach the teacher and the class about their chosen topic with lots of detail. Your child may bring in props, photos and include short video clips to assist them with their presentation. The top 2 children from each year group will move through to the next round to present their topic in front of the school on Wednesday 30 August. We will be working on their presentations over the next couple of weeks to help them prepare. It would be great if you could talk to your child about a suitable topic that they could teach us about. The children will be presenting their presentations during Week 5 (21st-25th August). Please let your child’s teacher know if you have any questions. Miss Kennedy, Miss Milburn, Mrs Knight & Mrs Allaway Loburn Take the Floor (Yr 4 to Yr 8) This year’s topic is ‘The Power is Within Us!’ Students will be putting together an oral presentation that may include digital elements and physical props.  The timing for Y4/5 is 2 minutes maximum and Y6, 7 and 8,  3 minutes maximum.  Team sharing will be completed by the end of week 5. Loburn School presentation sharing will be on Wednesday 30th August (week 6) The Quad School competition will be held on Friday 8th September. (week 7) in the Mt.Thomas Room. Please check with your child’s teacher for details for specific teams.
