Presentation of the Lord "The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him." Simeon surprised Mary and Joseph with his declaration that their baby was the long-awaited Messiah. They of course knew the truth about their son's identity and mission. But to hear someone else announce it was the amazing part. The Gospel tells us that the Holy Spirit was upon Simeon; thus he had a kind of divine revelation about the baby Jesus. God spoke through him to confirm the holy secret that Mary and Joseph already kept in their hearts. Anna too spoke about the child as "the redemption of Jerusalem," thus adding another mystical assurance that Jesus was in fact the Savior. These events that took place during the Presentation in the Temple can remind us about the important role of the members of the believing community. Like Simeon and Anna, we are meant to encourage one another, and to announce the Gospel to others with courage and conviction. When we are rooted in prayer, and attuned to the Holy Spirit, we too can be effective instruments of God's power. Then, amazing things can happen! We become the channels through which God's truth is proclaimed, and through which his love and healing, comfort and compassion, are given to other people. Indeed, when we are "righteous and devout" like Simeon, and dedicated to prayer like Anna, we prepare ourselves to become Christ's coworkers in the world. ©2013 Liturgical Publications Inc

The Sanctuary Lamp in the Reservation Chapel is lit in and The Daily Mass Chapel candle is lit in memory of “Aunt Sue” Christine Christopher by Joan and John Haviland 2013 BISHOP’S APPEAL – OUTSTANDING PLEDGES On behalf of Father Jim and the Bishop’s Appeal Committee, I would like to extend my sincere thanks and gratitude to the 488 families and individuals who participated in the 2013 Bishop’s Appeal. Through your generosity, the parish amassed $122,097.34 in gifts and pledges, exceeding the Diocese’s assessment by some $20,000. Unfortunately, at this late date, dozens of pledges totaling $14,920.00 remain unpaid, either in part or in full. If these pledges are not satisfied in the very near future, the outstanding balance will be subtracted from the above total. As you know, 50% of all funds collected from our Bishop’s Appeal efforts which exceed the established assessment are returned to the parish each year. Failure to fulfill these pledges will severely diminish the overage payment which Corpus Christi would have received in rebate. I ask you to please honor your commitment to the parish, to yourself and to God and complete any outstanding pledge payments to the Diocese in the next 30 days. The Diocese will be closing its accounting records on the 2013 Bishop’s Appeal in midMarch, after which all unredeemed pledges will cause the parish to lose valuable and needed funds.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR February 2, 2014

First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4 (524) Second Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18 Gospel Reading: Luke 2:22-40 Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple to be consecrated. Simeon, a holy and pious man, tool the child in his arms, and Anna the prophetess gave thanks to God. Question for Adults: When does the Holy Spirit most open you up to see Christ in yourself and others? Question for Youth: Name nice things about yourself. That’s’ Jesus in you! Can you see nice things in your friends, teachers, and other people around you? Do you thank them for being nice? As by law in Hebrew Scripture, all firstborn males were consecrated to the Lord. “The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom: and the favor of God was upon him”. We too can grow in the Holy Spirit and experience the Messiah in our midst: have lives characterized by awaiting the revelation of Christ’s Presence -only to have our fidelity rewarded by seeing Christ. Save the Date Annual Pasta Dinner The annual Pasta Dinner will be held Saturday, February 8th in the Parish Activity Center Hall. Dinner will consist of Spaghetti, Meatballs, sausage, baked ziti and dessert. Adults $10 and children 12 and under $5. Only 120 eat in tickets will be available. Take out will be an option for people. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Come and join us for fellowship and support of our youth! YOUTH MINISTRY Bottle Collections WE ARE NO LONGER COLLECTING BOTTLES AT CORPUS CHRISTI. THANK YOU FOR YOUR PAST SUPPORT IN OUR FUNDRAISING PRAYER AND WORSHIP What a fabulous re-awakening it has been to experience "Jesus Christ Superstar." I watched and sang (or hummed); I watched and laughed; I watched and cried; I watched and applauded -- but most of all -- I watched and celebrated ! The original "...Superstar" ended with the death of Jesus, but this troupe added the RESURRECTION. It was awesome !! HE LIVES !!! I don't think there are adequate words to not only compliment the cast and musicians on their insight, talent and creativity but to make them aware of the spirit their performance moved within me and many, many others. What a special way to prepare for the coming season of Lent. Starting this weekend, there will be boxes in the gathering areas to collect your old palm branches. They will be burned and used with the ashes dispensed on Ash Wednesday, March 5th -- the beginning of our Lenten season. Let's all start a new beginning -- not to attend, not to simply participate, but to CELEBRATE every step of the way !! May you be blessed with the graces of our loving God. Help enrich the worship experience at Corpus Christi by joining a music ensemble. The Music Ministry has a place for everyone: singers and instrumentalists, young and old! Please see Matt Duclos, Director of Music, for more information, or consult the Music Ministry web page: www.corpuschristichurch.net/music Children's Choir Available for children in grades 3 and above. This choir's next performance will be during the Easter season.

Adult Choir The Adult Choir provides harmony for the hymns each weekend and presents seasonal music throughout the year. Being able to read music is not a requirement for joining this choir. Rehearsals are each Thursday from 7:00-8:30pm in the church. Joining this ensemble is sure to enrich your spirituality, and your participation is greatly appreciated by everyone at Corpus Christi.

Contemporary Music Ensemble This group provides music for the monthly Choose Christ Youth Mass at 5:30pm. We are in need of singers, guitarists (bass, acoustic, and electric), and other instrumentalists. The music is contemporary and upbeat and it's a lot of fun to participate!

Resurrection Choir For people who are able to sing as needed in the choir at funerals. Rehearsals are the half hour before each funeral.

Corpus Christi’s Book Club The Corpus Christi Book Club is currently reading the book titled: “On Heaven and Earth.” The book is a dialogue between Pope Francis, then Cardinal Bergoglio, and Rabbi Abraham Skorka. Both men are Argentinian. There are 29 chapters in this book, and each chapter covers a different topic. The topics include: God, Atheists, Religions, Death, Women, Abortion, Poverty, the Holocaust, the Arab-Israeli conflict, etc. The book offers an example of how meaningful interreligious dialogue can take place, and it provides the reader with an opportunity to learn more about Pope Francis and his personal beliefs and positions on a wide variety of important topics.

A need has been expressed that a nursery during the 10:30 Mass for some families would be beneficial. To make this ministry become available we will be in need of at least eight adults & eight teens who be committed to giving of their time. We are now in the process of moving forward to rejuvenate our ministries, make your parish, Corpus Christi become exciting with new ideas and new faces by encouraging everyone to take the time to pray about how they would be able to give of their time and talents. With Lent just a few weeks away this could be the opportunity to say “What can I do instead of what can I give up?” Each week we will be highlighting a ministry for you to possibly consider participating and using your talents. Our Lady of Lourdes Blessed Pope John Paul II designated 11 February as World Day of the Sick, “a special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding us to see in our sick brother and sister the face of Christ who, by suffering, dying, and rising, achieved the salvation of humankind (Letter Instituting the World Day of the Sick, 13 May 1992,3). Anointing Mass: If you are ill, facing surgery, or otherwise feel in need of this healing sacrament, please join us on Tuesday, Feb 11th, at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the Gathering Space after the Mass. Why come to this Mass? Here’s information from the Catechism about the Sacrament of the Sick: ‘The fruits of this Sacrament are: ~Unity with the Passion of Christ, for the sick person’s own good and that of the whole Church. ~Strength, peace, and courage to endure as a Christian the sufferings of illness or old age. ~Forgiveness of sins, if the sick person was not able to obtain it through the Sacrament of Penance. ~Restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of the soul. ~Preparation for entering eternal life.’

We had 3 fantastic performances here at Corpus Christi thanks to the talented cast, crew, and pit orchestra made up of parishioners from Corpus Christi, St. Clement's, and St. Edward's. The success of this collaborative production is a tribute to the dedication of everyone involved and the support of the Corpus Christi Community. Special thanks go to Don and his team for materials and assistance in set up, the Snow Removal Ministry for their help last Saturday evening, Leslie for selling tickets over the past few weeks, Jackie for her help each night with tickets and food, Karen for organizing the concessions, and Gail and her money counters for their assistance. Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for providing beverages at intermission and all their help during each performance. Thank you to Denise for all she does with The Giving Circle, which is the charity that benefited from this production. Lastly, I am grateful for Fr. Jim and his unending support throughout the entire production. From auditions in September, rehearsals throughout the fall and winter, to his performance as King Herod, he has been instrumental in the success of this show. WANTED: SPECIAL PEOPLE To be volunteers for The Community Hospice, serving Saratoga and Washington Counties, providing care for seriously ill people and their families during the process of dying and grieving. Volunteers are assigned to make friendly visits to provide emotional support to Hospice patients and their families. Hospice will hold an Open House to discuss volunteer opportunities on Tues. “Pastoral Care to the Sick, Elderly and Homebound” Training--Began Thursday evening, January 23, 2014, a Six Week Formation and Skill Building Workshop entitled “Pastoral Care to the Sick, Elderly and Homebound” will be held from 6:308:30pm at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 WatervlietShaker Road, Latham. This program will be held Thursday evenings through February 27th and will provide information on: the art of pastoral visitation; communication skills; illness issues; spiritual assessment; grief and loss; suffering and faith; death and dying; ritual and sacraments in pastoral ministry; theology of pastoral care and care giving issues. Weekly sessions include presentations and interactive exercises, as well as readings. Two pastoral visits are required along with a journal process.
