LOCAL WINNERS AT PENARTH REGATTA NOT SO MANY dinghies as usual went from the Barry Yacht Club to the Penarth Yacht Club Regatta held on Saturday week. In the Albacore class, Dennis Grace led all the way and won from Jack Booker with John. Grehan third. Only two 18ft. Nationals took part, with Tom Salmon in Nimrod being an easy winner from Gordon Vick in Corsair. The cadets in the Mirrors took the first four places out of a fair-sized entry. Ian Hurst was first, and Rod Booker, Nigel Vick and Malcolm Macdonald in the next three places respectively. There were only three cadet boats for the Cadet race on Monday week, the winner being Nigel Vick, and Rod Booker and Ian Hurst coming second and third respectively. On the following day there was team racing against Penarth at home and away and Barry won both events. Thursday saw the start of weekday points racing for the Mirrors, and as there was a lot of wind and strong tides, a small course was laid for the 18ft. Nationals. Corsair managed to pass Billy Budd on the second round to finish first, the latter coming second and Bantry Bay third. In the cruisers, only one boat managed to sail the correct course, and this was John Woodward's Prelude and there were a few capsizes in the Albacores event. Also Ian Vick sailing Tom Salmon's Nimrod went over in the 18ft. Nationals -- as two boats went to his assistance the race was cancelled. A cadet team went to Mumbles

and came home worthy winners with two firsts, two seconds and a fourth. Sunday's Pursuit race was won by Rod Booker in a Mirror with D. Evans' Albacore in second place, and. G. Vick's ,l8ft. National third. The cruisers sailed to a buoy in Weston Bay, J. Woodward's Prelude coming home first. but C. Pugh's Symphony winning on corrected time. Results: THURSDAY Albacores: 1, Swift (T. An interesting visitor to the harbour recently was Sir Reginald Verdon Smith's "Fabella." This superb yacht is very well known along the South coast and she was flying the Royal Yacht Squadron burgee. Some older members feel that this is the first time a R.Y.S. yacht has visited Barry. CONFUSION AMONG THE "NATIONALS" Five boats turned out for Thurs¬day's race in the 18 ft. Nationals event, Bantry Bay having a damaged forestay and failing to make the line. The buoy was laid out in the strong ebb tide and it was a hard beat to get out to it, but Tarantella was first around, followed by Rebel, Nimrod, Happy Daze and Corsair. The wind eased on the way up to the Sully and Tarantella, Nimrod and Rebel got close inshore to avoid the tide. However, Rebel lost the wind and fell behind, but Nimrod and Tarantella were having a close duel to get out to the mark; unfortunately for them, they went Yachting 5th June 69 around it the wrong way. However she was overtaken by Nimrod on the way back, and the result was Tarantella 1st, Happy Daze 2nd and Nimrod 3rd. On Saturday there was even less wind but much frustration as the 18 ft. Nationals and Cruisers had to cross the line in one direction and Albacores and Mirrors in the opposite. Nimrod was lucky enough to get over the line and away out into the up tide, soon to be followed by Harmony, while the others were in the down set, and no wind to get them out. Nimrod and Harmony were nearly back at Bendricks when the others, except for Corsair, de¬cided to retire. The wind soon fresh¬ened and Corsair managed to finish. R.N.L.I. PENNANT TO AIRMAN IN CONTRAST to last week’s light winds there was a southerly gale blowing for the racing or Thursday. The Albacore's race was void because only one boat sailed the correct course, and there was no racing for Mirrors. In the 18 ft. Nationals only four boats were out. Rebel was first over the line only to be overtaken by Corsair on the way to the outer mark, and Corsair was overtaken by Nimrod between the outer and Sully. This order was maintained throughout the two rounds. Saturday was a special handicap race for the R.N.L.I. Pennant, when all the boats started together, and the overall winner was Ted Thompson (R.A.F.) in Albacore, Swift. This race also counts for class points. Two 18 ft. Nationals went to Mumbles for a two-day Open Meeting in the strong winds on Saturday. Corsair had two - thirds, but in the light winds on Sunday she could only finish fifth each time, which gave her fourth place overall. Rebel was about eighth overall. On Sunday four cadets sailed their Mirrors to Cardiff Regatta and came home with the first four places in the race for this class of boat. RESULTS Thursday, 18 ft. Nationals: 1, Nimrod (T. FATHER BEATS SON IN PURSUIT RACE SATURDAY WEEK'S racing was cancelled because of lack of wind, but on Thursday there was a fair breeze and some close racing in the 18 ft. National class. Corsair managed to overhaul Nimrod on the last beat to finish first, and Bantry Bay was so close that it looked as if she might get second but Nimrod just held her off. Saturday's wind lightened as the race progressed, and Tarantella who had made a good start and was up with the leaders until the last beat down from Sully, went too close in shore and lost the little wind that was there. Nimrod was first to finish followed by Corsair with Billy Budd third. In the National Championships at the Isle of Man "Rebel" came tenth overall. Results: THURSDAY Cruisers: 1, Stormalong (C. Evans came first in an Albacore, just besting his son in a Mirror. This was a well-deserved win as they had brought up their boats from Saundersfoot where they are holidaying, just for the race. Nigel Vick was third in another Mirror.

CORSAIR IN LINE FOR POINTS WIN At the Albacore Open Meeting held at Barry the week-end before last, conditions were ideal and the overall winner was Blackmail, a visitor from Herne Bay. Ted Thompson, of the R.A.F., was second and Darrall Jones third. Points races were held on Saturday. In the 18 ft. National class Bantry Bay was again being sailed by Arthur Fielding's son John, and he and Gareth Howe in Billy Budd had a very good race, with places changing a couple of times. Tarantella and Rebel were well up in the beginning, but fell back to let Corsair through, and the finish was Billy Budd, Bantry Bay and Corsair. With only two more points races to go, it appears that Corsair will be overall winner, with second and third places to be decided. Results : 18 ft. Nationals : 1, Billy Budd (G. Howe); 2, Bantry Bay (J. Fielding): 3. Corsair (G. Vick). Albacores : 1, Oblivion (D. Jones); 2, Sandette (A. Coxall); 3, Circe (J. Booker). Mirrors : 1, Thiswayup (N. Vick); 2, Lunde (R. BARRY YACHT CLUB THE WIND was stronger than expected for Saturday's points race. In the 18 ft. National class, Billy Budd made the best start and was away with her spinnaker up and was unable to be caught. Rebel hit „the distance mark and had to re-round it so was left trailing at the start. Tarantella and

Corsair had a close race on the first round with Happy Daze well up. Rebel managed to make up, but failed to catch Tarantella. The result was Billy Budd first with Corsair second and Tarantella third. Three Albacores went to -Bala for the Welsh Games. There were very strong winds and Only one race was sailed in the final. Nigel Brinn came fifth overall. In the Cruisers points race, John Chandler sailed his new boat, a Nicholson 32, to second place behind "Stormy" Davies' Stormalong of Breaksea. These boats had very little wind for the first three hours going to Steep Holm, but made a reasonably fast time back. Results 18 ft. Nationals : 1, Billy Budd (G. Howe); 2, Corsair (G. Unknown Date The Barry Yacht Club's summer points Series, some very close racing n all four classes. In the National 18's,' Gordon Vick's Corsair and Gareth Howe's Billy Budd were tieing before the last race, and neither helmsman could sail in this race. Gordon's eldest son. Nigel, took his father's place, and Viv Booker helmed Billy Budd, so an interesting race was promised. Unluckily, Billy Budd's jib was torn right at the start. and she had to sail under mainsail only. Young Vick did very well and beat the rest of the class to finish first and win the trophy for his father. Six in row

In the Albacore main series for the Peter Cosgrove Trophy, with six races to go, Darrel Jones looked unbeatable with eight firsts to Jack Booker's two, but Booker won six in a row to tie at the first count, and five more races had to be counted, one at a time, before a result could be established. Jones won. The Tarrock Cup for the Mirrors saw Robert Evans with one first more than Ian Hurst, and the latter needed a win to tie, and would then have won overall with better supporting results. However, Evans made no mistake and took the last race and the overall position. There was also a tie between C. L. Davies and Tony Cox in the main cruiser series, resolved by the next result as a win by Davies in Stormalong of Breaksea.
