Traip Academy believes that grading and reporting of student achievement should accurately reflect what students know and are able to do rather than a simple numerical grade. This pedagogical shift in learning has necessitated a shift in reporting. Therefore, an official Traip Academy transcript for the class of 2018 may have some final course grades reported on a traditional 100 point scale in addition to the 1-4 scale. A student has successfully completed a course when their final aggregate score is a 3.0 or higher within that particular course. For more

THE SCHOOL AND THE COMMUNITY R.W. Traip Academy is committed to providing a rigorous and engaging education for every student. Our school has positioned itself at the forefront of Maine's Proficiency-based educational movement by delivering unique learning opportunities alongside flexibility within the curriculum and program of studies. The school is situated in Kittery, Maine's Southernmost community, which has approximately 9,500 residents. Kittery's student population benefits greatly from military families that staff the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, providing the U.S. Navy’s nuclear- powered submarine fleet with quality overhaul work. District wide, 30% of our student population comes from military connected families. Household income varies widely.
Traip Academy was founded in 1906 and celebrated a century of graduates in 2006, carrying on the tradition of challenging, motivating, and supporting all students to achieve at the highest level so that they are successful in a 21st century job market. In fact, the school is anchored by the following five 21st Century Learning Expectations. All Traip Academy Graduates will be: Creative and practical problem-solvers Clear and effective communicators Responsible and collaborative citizens Integrative and informed thinkers Reflective and dedicated learners
THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM Our proficiency-based learning and graduation policies ensure that all students leave as highly literate and skilled graduates. Throughout their experience at Traip Academy, all students will demonstrate proficiency in 44 graduation standards across nine domains (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science & Technology, Health & Physical Education, Visual & Performing Arts, World Languages, Career & Education Development, as well as 21st Century Learning Expectations often referred to as “Maine’s Guiding Principles”). All learning experiences are academically rigorous and are designed to prepare students for success in college, career, and citizenship. Highlights of the Academic Program: • Students are required to engage in an educational experience in each of the following areas during each of their four years of high school: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. • Students are required to engage in a minimum of six full-time learning experiences per year. Courses are offered in a block scheduling format, meeting for 74-minute long periods every other day. • All courses are “college preparatory” unless otherwise noted. Advanced Placement (AP), Advanced, and Honors designations imply greater rigor. • Quality Habits Of Work (HOW) are essential to a student’s success in high school and beyond. Students receive a dedicated HOW grade for each learning experience. These HOW grades are assessed using the 21st Century Learning Expectations. • Internships are encouraged for all students through established school-community partnerships with local businesses and organizations. • Advanced Placement courses in English Literature & Composition, Calculus AB, Statistics, Biology, Physics 1, Physics 2, and Studio Art are on-site. Additionally, students may utilize AP4ALL and/or Virtual High School platforms to engage in other designated AP opportunities. • In cases when students pursue the study of a subject we do not offer, teachers will work independently with the student under either an Independent Study (IS) or Directed Study (DS) agreement. • There are a number of online services utilized by Traip Academy students to provide additional learning opportunities not available on site. • In concert with nearby York County Community College, Traip Academy offers a variety of dual-enrollment and concurrent-enrollment opportunities for its third and fourth year students. Prior to graduation all students will complete: • A minimum of 10 hours community service/year of enrollment • Sophomore Service-Learning Project • Junior Career Exploration Experience • Senior Capstone Project
