The Fiji Government estimates almost 350,000 people living in the cyclone’s path  could have been affected – 180,000 men and 170 000 women.   •    41 people have been confirmed dead.   •    131 people are injured.  •    Almost 50,000 people are currently sheltering in nearly 800 evacuation centres.  •    Damage to agriculture is estimated to be US$61 million with 100 per cent of crops  destroyed in the worst affected areas.  •    At least 117 schools have been damaged   Taveuni Club   Spoke with Geoffrey Amos last night.   Island seriously damaged e.g. South Taveuni Town – 1,533 people  – was 400 homes – now 10 remain habitable. Community sheltering in the battered school buildings.   35 Govt. officials arrived by air to do assessments. First call by them to Rotary seeking 35 mattresses for them to sleep on.   Rotary Food Packs have been distributed.   ERKs en route from Suva.   Supplies of building materials first priority. Most likely will have to be imported.   Lautoka Club   ERKs and Food Packs distribution continues. Coverage on TV 3 on Wednesday.   Suva Clubs   Visiting communities with NDMO. Food and water major priority. Have agreed to increase Food Pack donation from RNZ to $30K trusting that clubs will respond to appeal.   ERKs and Food Pack Distribution to continue throughout weekend in conjunction with NDMO  

ERKs depart Whenuapai this morning   Savusavu   Emergency Response Kits continue to be distributed. Nukubalavu and Nacekoro villages badly hit.   Food Packs being delivered.   NDMO has requested help for Koro Island.

A message has been received handwritten and brought out by plane and then emailed to us from Nadi   They still have no services – water, communications etc..   For those who know Geoffrey Amos, his property survived but little else did.   He is boating across to Rabi and Kioa Islands to assess damage.   No road access to South Taveuni (refer Photos Bulletin 4).   Emergency Response Kits are being shipped in from Suva.   School desks and stationery needed urgently (please advise any contacts)   Timber treated D4S 150x25, 200x25, 100x50,  75x50,  50x25, 150x50 all 6m lengths also urgently needed (please advise any contacts)    New Zealand NGO Disaster Relief Forum   We have held 1 hour Skype meetings each day this week and today Thursday members are flying to Christchurch for in depth planning for 2nd phase (recovery) Rotary New Zealand will coordinate its activities with Rotary Fiji using resources available from the other members.   MFAT   We brief MFAT daily as to Rotary New Zealand and Rotary Fiji’s response. Their financial and logistical support is gratefully received.  

From: stuartbatty [mailto:[email protected]]   Sent: Wednesday, 24 February 2016 9:37 a.m.  Subject: Rotary New Zealand ­ Cyclone Winston ­ Bulletin 5   Bulletin 5   These Bulletins are being sent to NZ DG’s E’s and N’s.   DG’s ­  Please feel free to distribute to clubs.   Distribution of Emergency Response Kits (ERKs) is now in full swing in the Western Division and out of Suva to the Central Division where whole villages have been wiped out. Also on Vanua Levu at the Savusavu end of the island.  

A consignment is on its way today to Vanuabalavu Island on MV ‘Sereniwai' .  Vanuabalavu has a population of 1,100 and took the eye of the cyclone right on the nose as shown below.   

The 714 ERK’s in Fiji will be replenished by a further shipment being sent from Auckland. We have requested space on HMNZS Canterbury.   Still no response from Taveuni.   MFAT have put out their offer for us to bid in their competitive grant process. Gathering information and putting a 20 page submission together within 3 working days has its challenges. In consultation with Rotary Fiji, we will bid for funding for building materials.   As far as we are aware, all Rotarians in Fiji are safe and well, although many have had damage to their homes.   In our MOU with VSA, there may be opportunities for volunteer (construction experts) assignments – 6 month. Please direct any inquiry to us.

  Suva, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi Rotary on Veti Levu are awaiting clearance and instruction from the NDMO (for the safety of all volunteers) before heading out to distribute food packs and ERKS in the more severely affected areas, as some areas are still not accessible due to some roads being washed away and others still blocked.    Labasa Rotary on Vanua Levu advices damage not significant around Labasa.   Savasavu Rotary also on Vanua Levu advise significant damage around Savusavu.   Taveuni Rotary has not responded to calls. The Northern end of the island where the club meets escaped damage but South Taveuni devasted as was the wharf which is used by roll on roll off ships to offload trucks. A major headache for the island.   MFAT are offering competitive funding to NGO’s for major projects. Considering the options for best outcomes within our capability.   Public response to appeal has started.

RNZWCS will need substantial funds to replenish the 714 ERKs we have prepositioned in three locations in Fiji and further will be airlifted from Auckland if deemed necessary.   Ba in the Western Division is one town badly affected as historically happens.   Rotary Fiji have logistical support, trucks etc..

  MFAT have sent a C130 to Fiji with supplies and personnel to assess damage in remote areas.   Best wishes Stuart  

From: stuartbatty [mailto:[email protected]]   Sent: Saturday, 20 February 2016 4:05 p.m.  Subject: Rotary New Zealand ­ Cyclone Winston   Bulletin 1   Tonga   We are still awaiting contact with Rotary Nuku’alofa and other partners in Tonga to assess the immediate and ongoing needs.   Emergency Response Kits are prepositioned in Tonga for immediate distribution if required.   Unconfirmed reports suggest extensive damage to schools etc..   Fiji   Have been in contact with PDG Warwick Pleass who is coordinating Rotary’s response. Until late tomorrow Sunday, the position will remain unclear.
