JumpRope Portal User’s Guide 2015-2016 Once you login to your child’s account (remember, this is your child’s @spsdme.org school account with your child’ WELCOME SCREEN: Once you have logged in you will see a screen that welcomes you. Please note that at this time we are not using the attendance feature. If you click on that button nothing will happen. However, if you click on the “Grade Alerts” button or tab at the top of the screen you will see a list of any work that has not been turned into your student’s teachers.
!
CURRENT GRADES: When you click the button that says “Current Grades” or select the “Current Grades” tab at the top of the screen, you will arrive at a screen that looks like the one below. This screen gives you a quick look at how your student is progressing toward proficiency in each course.
!
NOTE: The course score is an average of the scores of each Essential Learning Target in the course. The score for each Essential Learning Target is a calculation of the scores on tasks and activities measuring students’ developing content knowledge and skills. Teachers score tasks and activities on a 1-4 scale where a 1 means not meeting the target, 2 means partially meeting the target, 2.5 means the student is exhibiting a strong foundation of learning and is approaching the target, 3 means meeting the target, and 4 means exceeding the target. (See the note at the bottom of page 2 for an explanation on how scores for Essential Learning Targets are calculated.)
!1 version 10/1/2015
JumpRope Portal User’s Guide 2015-2016 LEVEL OF MASTERY: If you click on the small, gray triangle to the left of the course name, an indented list will appear. As you can see below, in this example, there are two items (or folders) in the list: Overall Content Mastery (100%) and Overall Habits of Work Mastery.
! NOTE: The 100% next to the Overall Content Mastery means that the course score you see is based 100% on the information within that folder and NOT on the information in the Overall Habits of Work Mastery.
As shown in the example below, if you click on the small, gray triangle to the left of the Overall Content Mastery folder a list of the Foundational Topics that have been worked on thus far appear. Here the Foundational Topics worked on at this point in the year include Geometry and Number & Quantity
! By clicking the small, gray triangle to the left of a Foundational Topic folder, you are able to get a list of the Essential Learning Targets worked on at this point for that Foundational Topic.
! NOTE: Essential Learning Target scores are not an average of the scores on tasks and activities. Instead, JumpRope has been set to calculate scores using a mathematical function called the Power Law. This calculation type is based on research on how students learn. It is a time-based calculation that takes into account the trend in student scores. In this way, it more closely represents true student learning progress than a typical average score. In other words, the score you see for each learning target is what your student is most likely to score on the next activity according to his or her performance to date. This calculation does not include Habits of Work scores.
TASKS AND ACTIVITIES: Teachers design tasks and activities of varying forms that are intended to help students acquire specific knowledge and skills. Teachers provide !2 version 10/1/2015
JumpRope Portal User’s Guide 2015-2016 students feedback on how they are progressing on an individual target by scoring these tasks and activities. To see how your child is doing on individual tasks and activities you can click on the small, gray triangle to the left of an Essential Learning Target. When you click the triangle, the folder opens up to an indented list of tasks and activities given to your child to gauge where she or he is in learning that target. These are tasks or activities that your child has completed and the teacher has scored.
!
NOTE: A task or activity may appear in a list under more than one Essential Learning Target as it may have been designed to have students show their learning on more than one target.
FORMATIVE AND SUMMATIVE: The score for each Essential Learning Target is a calculation of the scores on tasks and activities measuring students’ developing content knowledge and skills. Teachers score tasks and activities on a 1-4 scale where a 1 means not meeting the target, 2 means partially meeting the target, 2.5 means the student is exhibiting a strong foundation of learning and is approaching the target, 3 means meeting the target, and 4 means exceeding the target. Here you see 5 formative tasks or activities scored for the Number & Quantity Essential Learning Target.
! Formative means that this was a task or assignment that students were given to help them form their understanding or to practice a skill. This is information that tells the teacher and students what still needs to be worked on. In this example, the tasks were to develop understanding. One was a check-in quiz that was given to see how well students were !3 version 10/1/2015
JumpRope Portal User’s Guide 2015-2016 doing in multiplying and dividing fractions. It was an “in progress” of learning quiz and not one that “counts” toward a final score. NOTE: Generally formative tasks are not designed to allow students to show an understanding that exceeds the target. Formative tasks are the checkpoints on the intermediate steps students’ progress through to reach the higher levels of learning. These tasks are measuring what students need to have as far as knowledge and skills to be able to become proficient on the Essential Learning Targets. Thinking about these as the rungs or stepson a ladder may be helpful.
Summative means that this was a piece of work completed that was meant to show the teacher exactly what the student has learned and is able to demonstrate for full rigor of the target. Essential Learning Target scores are calculated primarily on only summative scores since summative tasks have a full weight of 1.0 and formative tasks have a negligible weight of .01 for the first quarter of the year. This means that “in-process learning” will not impact their overall score but students and parents will be able to track students’ progress toward the target. Starting in the second quarter, the weight of the formative tasks will be reduced to 0.
NOTE: Until a summative score is entered, formative scores are used to calculate the overall score for an Essential Learning Target. This allows parents and students to get a sense of how learning is progressing. Once the student has engaged in a summative activity or task to show what he or she knows or can do at the full level of understanding and skill required of the target, the overall score for the Essential Learning Target will reflect only the summative scores.
In the example below, the Geometry Essential Learning Target “Is skilled at finding area and circumference of circles” score is reflective of the trend on the summative tasks shown: 1 up to a 3. The trend predicts that the next likely score the student will receive will be a 2.3.
! Although not mathematically accurate, it may be helpful to think of the trend calculation as similar to a “line of best fit.”

Labeling/Naming !4 version 10/1/2015
JumpRope Portal User’s Guide 2015-2016 ● In the title use the following naming convention - Activity Style, Activity Type Objective, Source, - where the style tells what form the activity took, activity type tells if it was formative or summative, the objective tells what content the activity was focused on, and the source tells what/where the materials from.
o Example: ▪
HW F Factor & Multiples pg. 233
▪
CW S Conjugate Reg ER verbs Handout
▪
Demo F Keeping eye on ball in class
● Style codes: o HW (homework) o CW (class work … exit slip, bell work, etc.) o Pres (presentation) o Proj (project) o Quiz (quiz) o Test (test) o Conf (conference) o Obs (observation) o Demo (demonstration) o Evid (Body of Evidence) o Lab (lab) o Essay (essay) o FW (field work) o CR (constructed response; shorting writing tasks) !5 version 10/1/2015
JumpRope Portal User’s Guide 2015-2016
● Type codes: o F (formative) o S (summative
● Source codes: o Handout (could be a worksheet, article, etc.) o Book (something assigned from the text, could be pages and problem #s, reading assignment, etc.) o Class (something generated in class or perhaps written on the board) o School (materials provided during the class for use in class) o Web (something accessed on the internet as in a particular site)
CLASS CONTENT KEY:
4.0 – 3.01 = exceeding proficiency and honors level learning 3.0 - 2.7 = represents proficient learning thus far 2.6 – 2.5 = forming a solid foundation for further learning 2.4 – 2.0 = developing understanding below 2.0 = concerns for further learning
HABITS OF WORK KEY:
3.0 - 2.5 = indicates regular exhibition of behaviors important for learning identified by the HOW targets 2.4 – 2.0 = inconsistent exhibition of behaviors for learning identified by the HOW targets below 2.0 = needs improvement
MISSING ASSIGNMENTS: Parents have a few options to check to see if their child(ren) are missing an assignment. The “Grade Alerts” tab will provide a list of tasks that are currently ungraded for the student. These are listed from the most recent to the oldest task(s).
