$1.4 Million Grant will support the unemployed in eleven Northern California Counties SACRAMENTO - The California Employment Development Department (EDD) announced today that it will provide a $1.4 million grant to the Northern Rural Training and Employment Consortium (NoRTEC) to help retrain 255 individuals who have been laid off due to various reasons, including business closures. NoRTEC is a consortium of eleven Northern California counties that is dedicated to economic prosperity by addressing the needs of local businesses and job seekers. This organization includes the counties of Butte, Del Norte, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Plumas, Shasta, Sierra, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity. NoRTEC staff will provide training to displaced workers at their existing facilities. “Although California’s economic recovery is gaining strength, it’s important to continue offering resources to individuals who are seeking employment,” said Patrick W. Henning, Jr., EDD’s director. “The grant will make it possible for NoRTEC to help these employees learn new skills, acquire the necessary tools to find employment and have a better future.” NoRTEC will focus its training on six industries that are in high-demand in the region including: health care, information technology, agribusiness/agritech, advanced manufacturing, alternative energy, and small business/entrepreneurs. The organization identified these key sectors by using labor market data, contacting employers and analyzing applicants’ skills and abilities. Funding for this program is drawn from the governor’s 25 percent portion of the dislocated worker funds from Title I of the federal Workforce Investment Act (WIA) administered by the EDD under the authority of the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency. For more information about this project, please contact Michael Cross, executive director with NoRTEC at (530) 892-9600. You can also visit NoRTEC’s website at http://www.ncen.org/.
