SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

We are in the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings today challenge us to choose freely and wisely to observe the laws given to us by our loving and caring God. He revealed His laws through Moses and the prophets in the Old Testament and through His own Son, Jesus, in the New Testament. The intention of the law is to promote the holiness and wholeness of each believer. The first reading is taken from the Book of Sirach. This reading contains the clearest statement in the Old Testament concerning the God-given freedom of the human will. It also exonerates God from all responsibility for evil in the world. “If you choose, you can keep the commandments . . . before you are life and death, whichever you choose shall be given you.” The author asserts that there should be no compromise when it comes to keeping God's law. In the second reading, Paul challenges his Corinthian believers to appreciate the wisdom of God’s saving plan for His people, a plan hidden for ages but now revealed by the Spirit. Paul advises Christians to seek true wisdom in God’s revelation instead of indulging in endless discussions of Greek philosophy. God in His wisdom has saved us through Jesus and prepared those who love Him, “What eye has not seen and ear has not heard and what has not entered the human heart.”

FEBRUARY 12, 2017

In today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges His disciples to live a life of justice and righteousness which would exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees. Jesus sets forth his own position with regard to the Law given through Moses by providing a new interpretation and meaning for the old laws. We need to obey God’s Law; in obeying God’s law and Church law, we demonstrate two basic principles, namely, the principle of reverence and the principle of respect. In the first four of the Ten Commandments we are asked to revere God, His holy name and His holy day and to revere our father and mother. The next set of commandments instructs us to respect life, one’s personal integrity and good name, the legal system, another’s property and another's spouse. This weekend, I will speak at all Masses and will invite you to participate in the diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA). The theme for this year is “The Joy of Love,” which represents compassion, mercy and love, calling upon us to love others as Jesus loves, selflessly. Our parish goal for this year is $65,000. I encourage all parishioners to participate, no matter how small your contribution may be. If we all participate and share the joy of love, I am confident that we can soon reach and even exceed our goal. Our participation in the ACA is our response to the call of discipleship. Your gifts make possible the work that affects so many in our diocese. For example, your contributions will impact the lives of 16 seminarians studying for the priesthood; 25 candidates in the permanent (Continues on page three…)

SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FEBRUARY 12, 2017

Connection to Christ By now you have probably heard about the ministry Connection to Christ (C2C). In case you haven’t or want to know more, Connection to Christ is a call to grow deeper in your relationship with Christ. It is about forming disciples and sending them on mission, just as Jesus did. Our parish has been given a great opportunity to partake in this ministry and we have already received so many graces through this ministry. A couple of parishes in our Diocese that have this ministry have experienced tremendous transformation through Connection to Christ and have brought hundreds of people closer to God and His Church. These parishes report having an active community, many intimate friendships have formed, and stronger faith for the parishioners.

For me personally, it has been such a blessing. As Jimmy mentioned last week, C2C has been so powerful in creating friendships and I feel very close to our team of facilitators and can trust that they are there for me—in prayer and action. Additionally, my relationship with Christ has grown in multiple ways. Like me, you may already have a relationship with Christ and might think that you are well-versed in Church teaching, so you don’t need this. However, Jesus calls us to constantly grow and never be content. Life is a journey and we can always become closer to Christ and help lead others to Him. We have a wonderful team that has been meeting weekly for months and is excited to journey with you. Last week, we had a training workshop during Super Bowl Sunday, and this weekend, we will be concluding our training. The facilitators are very equipped, committed and we have all been praying for each of you! I have been truly blessed by this experience and my hope is that you will prayerfully consider joining me and many wonderful individuals. We come from different walks of life, but our goal is to keep Christ at the center of our day-to-day lives. Connection to Christ is not a small group. It is a journey that we are all on as we seek to live like Christ. No matter where you are in your faith, you can always grow closer to God and others through Him. This Lent, I request you to join one of the small groups as we all journey with Christ together. The response we have received so far has been very good and people are eagerly signing up. I want to remind you that we have limited spaces available, so fill out a sign-up card today. If you have already taken a card, you must bring it back this week to be included. Once we receive your card, you will be hearing back from us. I understand we all lead busy lives, but this is worth your time. Jesus is calling you to be a disciple and to grow closer to Him and bring others closer to Him. Will you answer the call? -Kareen Georgee
