It’s a Warrior Nation...

Two Warrior students design shirt presented to all students

By Lauren Zimbeck The “Warrior Nation” T-shirts distributed to all students recently and generously purchased by the WHS Booster Club were designed by senior Mariah Thompson and junior Emma Salzwedel who won a contest asking for designs. Salzwedel came up with the saying on the back, “Proud to be a Warrior.” When designing, she thought that every Warrior should be proud to be a part of this great school. “I think everyone at WHS has Feature Warrior pride, and I’m glad that could be represented,” Salzwedel said. Thompson was the creative designer of the front of the shirt. “I wanted to represent South Dakota as a whole and to show that Warrior Nation is a dominant force statewide,” Thompson said. The donation from the Booster Club was given as a way to help build Warrior pride. Former WHS Booster Club president Jack Gregg said the shirts are a great way to unite students. “We had students design them to get them involved and create more school spirit,” Gregg said. “We wanted to make sure that every student could have some type of WHS swag. There are many students who didn’t own a WHS shirt, and we wanted them to be proud of their school and show off their school spirit.” Students were very enthusiastic about the shirts.

Sistine Chapel ceiling opens to public History.com (TNS) The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome, one of Italian artist Michelangelo’s finest works, was exhibited to the public for the first time on Nov. 1, 1512. Michelangelo’s epic ceiling frescoes, which took several years to complete, are among his most memorable works.

Our History

Photo by Ryan Le WARRIOR PRIDE—Senior Mariah Thompson (left) and junior Emma Salzwedel (right) pose with the shirts they designed in the WHS gym. Senior Thad Femrite was thankful for the message the shirt proclaimed. “It made me feel very proud to be a Warrior,” Femrite said. The Booster Club distributed the shirts early in the school year so students could plan a day in which everyone at WHS could unite at a sporting event, state tournament or an ordinary school day.

Central in a complex system of decoration featuring numerous figures are nine panels devoted to biblical world history. The most famous of these is The Creation of Adam, a painting in which the arms of God and Adam are stretching toward each other. In 1512, Michelangelo completed the work. After then spending 15 years as an architect in Florence, Michelangelo returned to Rome in 1534, where he would work and live for the rest of his life. That year saw his painting of the The Last Judgment on the wall above the altar in the Sistine Chapel for Pope Paul III. The massive painting depicts Christ’s damnation of sinners and blessing of the virtuous and is regarded as a masterpiece of early Mannerism. Michelangelo worked until his death in 1564 at the age of 88. In addition to his major artistic works, he produced numerous other sculptures, frescoes, architectural designs, and drawings, many of which are unfinished and some of which are lost. In his lifetime, he was celebrated as Europe’s greatest living artist, and today he is held up as one of the greatest artists of all time, as exalted in the visual arts as William Shakespeare is in literature or Ludwig van Beethoven is in music.
