Academic Letters presented to outstanding Warriors Seniors kick-off presentation of honor today

By Daniel Slaven and NOW Staff cademic Letters will be presented to WHS students who earned a 3.5 GPA or better average for both first and second semesters of last school year beginning today. In total, nearly 25 percent of sophomores, juniors and seniors earned the honor. Seniors will be recognized today during second period, juniors on Wednesday during second period and sophomores on Thursday during reading and third periods because of the early-start in-service schedule. The guest speaker for all three days will be former WHS Warrior Ashley Eide Pawloski, class of 2009. Pawloski was a four-year letter winner who tallied 1,277 career points and 689 rebounds, as well as a cumulative 4.0 GPA, before playing basketball for South Dakota State University. She helped lead the Jackrabbits to  four Summit League Conference Titles and four NCAA Tournament appearances. Today, she works with a local recruiting firm. Senior Carter Munce said he is pleased to earn an Academic Letter on his birthday today. “It is a challenge to achieve an academic letter that requires determination,” Munce said. “But if I can do it with 5 AP classes, I have a firm belief anyone can with a bit of elbow grease

JV football team ends season at 8-0 By Seth Benson The JV football team ended their season at a perfect 8-0 as they defeated the Bucks 34-0 Monday at Crane Youngworth Field in Yankton. The stat sheet included a wide variety of Warriors getting into the end zone. Junior running back Zaki Ladu was first getting the Warriors on the board with a 60-yard run to the house. Junior Trey Ponto continued the Warrior scoring with a pick-six, then later in the game a 2-point conversion from

freshman quarterback Tyus Hanson. Other Warriors getting in the end zone were Ladu with another long run, junior defensive lineman Malik Paulson, and junior wide receiver Jhett Anderson with a 33 yard reception from Hanson. Anderson said he thought the game started off slow. “But then we picked it up and got done what we needed to get done and ended up undefeated, which was our ultimate goal,” Anderson said. “Overall, we had a good sea-

son, and when people got hurt others stepped-up and played well.” The Warrior defense also stepped-up big with a shutout in their last game. Sophomore Ben Peterson led the defense with 10 tackles, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack. Coach Eric Struck said it was a dominate team effort in the final game for WHS. “The offense rolled up 461 yards with 292 on the ground and the defense pitched a shutout,” Struck said.

OPEC declares oil embargo History.com (MCT) The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) implemented what it called “oil diplomacy” on Oct. 17, 1973—it prohibited any nation that had supported Israel in its “Yom Kippur War” with Egypt, Syria and Jordan from buying any of the oil it sold.

Our History The ensuing energy crisis marked the end of the era of cheap gasoline and caused the share value of the New York Stock Exchange to drop by $97 billion. This, in turn, ushered in one of the worst recessions the United States had ever seen. People waited for hours in long lines at gas stations—at some New Jersey pumps, lines were four miles long. By the time the embargo ended in March 1974, the average retail price of gas had climbed to 84 cents per gallon from 38 cents per gallon. Sales of smaller, more fuel-efficient cars skyrocketed. At the same time, declining demand for the big, heavy gas-guzzlers that most American car companies were producing spelled disaster for the domestic auto industry. Even before the OPEC embargo, an American oil crisis was on the horizon— domestic reserves were low. Traditionally, perbarrel prices had been set by the oil companies, but in December, OPEC announced that from then on, its members would set their own prices on the petroleum they exported. As a result, the price of a barrel of oil went up to $11.65, 130 percent higher than it had been in October and 387 percent higher than it had been the year before.
