One-to-One Netbook and Chromebook Initiative Guidelines and Fee information Netbook and Chromebook Guidelines: The One to One netbooks and chromebooks are the property of the Franklin Area School District. The One to One netbooks and chromebooks are assigned to grade 7-12 students, who are enrolled on a fulltime basis. The netbooks and chromebooks must be returned to the Franklin Area School District at the conclusion of the school year, or in the event that the student is no longer enrolled in the Franklin Area School District for any reason. The netbook or chromebook must be returned in original working condition. The netbooks and chromebooks are educational tools and are to be used only in that capacity. The Franklin Area School District’s Acceptable Use of Educational Technology binds students using the netbooks and chromebooks regardless of location of usage. The use of the netbook or chromebook is a privilege. Inappropriate use or neglect of a netbook or chromebook, its carrying case, charger, the Internet, and all other installed software will result in the loss of use of the netbook or chromebook, which will not change classroom expectations and/or assignment completion. Internet and Software Guidelines: The FASD Acceptable Use of Educational Technology Policy #815 must be followed at all times. Students have no expectation of privacy as related to the netbook or chromebook and can expect teachers, technical support staff and administrators to conduct spot checks of their Internet history, logs, documents and other records of use. Inappropriate Web activity or email use will result in loss of netbook or chromebook privileges. If a student unintentionally links to an inappropriate website he/she should immediately close the site and report it to a staff member as soon as possible.

General Rules/ Guidelines: • Treat this equipment as if it was your own. • Bring netbook or chromebook and charger to school every day with battery charged • Students are responsible for the netbook or chromebook at all times. The netbooks or chromebooks are not to be left unattended. Netbooks or chromebooks must be carried in the school issued carrying case at all times. • Students are not authorized to use other students’ netbooks or chromebooks. • Do not let anyone else use your assigned netbook or chromebook. • Do not attempt to remove or change the physical structure of the netbook or chromebook, including the keys, screen cover, or plastic casing. • Do not put objects on top of the netbook or chromebook as they can damage the screen. • Avoid leaving the netbook or chromebook in extreme hot or cold environments. • Students may not use the netbooks or chromebooks on buses. • If a student is unable to carry and supervise his/her netbook or chromebook, it is to be locked in the student’s assigned locker. It is the student’s responsibility to notify the high school office if his/her school locker is not working properly. • Netbooks or chromebooks are not to be stored in lockers overnight. All netbooks or chromebooks are to be transported to the homes on a nightly basis (and over the weekend). • The netbook or chromebook must stay in the carrying case when not in use. • Students must keep their passwords confidential. • Students are responsible for backing up school documents. Never consider any electronic information safe when stored on only one device. • Headphones may be used in class with teacher’s permission. • Obscene language and/or inappropriate materials, including screensavers, backdrops and/or pictures are strictly prohibited. • Illegal use or transfer of copyrighted materials is prohibited. • Stickers or other decorations are not allowed. • School identification and nametags must remain on the netbook or chromebook and charger. • Food and drink should not be used near the netbook or chromebook. • Use the netbook or chromebook on a flat, stable surface. • Close the netbook or chromebook gently; pull from the top center of the cover. • Students are to report any technical issues affecting the performance of the netbook or chromebook to a member of the FASD technical staff or administration as soon as possible. • Adhere to all FASD School netbook or chromebook guidelines and current FASD Acceptable Use of Educational Technology policies #815, 815.1 and 815.2). When in doubt about acceptable use, ask the Assistant Principal. • Read and follow general maintenance alerts from the school Technology personal. • Repairs are only permitted by FASD tech department. The tech depart will be open from 7:30 am 2:30 pm on Monday through Friday unless otherwise noted. • Always completely close the lid and wait for the netbook or chromebook to enter sleep mode before moving it, even for short distance. Movement while the netbook or chromebook is on can result in permanent damage to the hard-drive and permanent loss of all data.

Charging Guidelines: • Enter school each day with a fully charged netbook or chromebook. • Align the power cord carefully when connecting it to or removing it from the netbook or chromebook. • If the battery is not charging, do NOT wiggle the power cord. To troubleshoot, remove the power cord and then carefully reconnect the power cord. • Be aware of the location of the charger and power cords when charging a netbook or chromebook. Do not run power cords across an area where people are likely to walk. • Close the lid of the netbook or chromebook when it is not in use, in order to save battery life and protect the screen.

Cleaning Guidelines: • Students may take their netbooks or chromebook to the High School Computer Office for track pad and screen cleaning. • Use only the cleaning solutions supplied by the Technology Department on your netbook or chromebook. Legal and Ethical Use Policies: • All aspects of FASD’s Acceptable Use Policy remain in effect. FASD will provide content filtering within the FASD network and outside of the network. However, FASD does not have full control of the information on the Internet or incoming email from a non-FASD email provider. All Internet and e-mail traffic will be logged. • File-sharing and File-sharing Programs: The installation and/or use of any Internet-based filesharing tools are explicitly prohibited. Filesharing programs and protocols like BitTorrent, Limewire, Kazaa, Acquisition and others may not be used to facilitate the illegal sharing of copyrighted material (music, video and images). • Allowable Customizations: The Student is permitted to alter or add files to customize the assigned netbook or chromebook to their own working styles (i.e., wallpaper, default fonts, and other system enhancements). However, FASD reserves the right to ensure all customizations follow the Acceptable Use Guidelines and may periodically conduct maintenance that may configure the netbook or chromebook back to the originally installed state.

1 to 1 Usage Fee Information: The Franklin Area School District offers the option to students and parents to pay a $50 1 to 1 Usage Fee which is for basic maintenance and repair. This fee covers the netbook or chromebook, but not the accessories (netbook or chromebook charger, battery, and carrying case). If there is damage or loss to any of the accessories, then an additional fee will be charged. Students will also be responsible for any additional fees incurred for repairs submitted even if they have paid the 1 to 1 Usage Fee at the beginning of the school year (see attached price list addendum). The High School and Middle School Principal will discuss a payment plan on a case by case basis for families that may need assistance with this fee. If you chose not to pay the 1 to 1 Usage Fee, all maintenance and repairs will be charged to the student at 100 % of the cost of the repair.

The 1 to 1 Usage Fee will reduce the cost of repairs due to the following: •

Damage: Partially pays for damage to the netbook or chromebook on school property, or at another location such as at home.

Accidental Damage: Partially pays for accidental damage caused by liquid spills, drops, falls, and collisions.

One-to-One Netbook & Chromebook Initiative Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Why do we need One-to-One learning? In order to engage and challenge today’s learners, the school environment must reflect the complexity of the modern world. One-to-One learning allows each student to experience the kind of learning environment that is rich in digital media, with instant access to resources all over the world, and supports critical thinking skills. Students at FHS and FMS will experience a dynamic environment on a daily basis and in turn, will become lifelong learners who are active, knowledgeable, and creative. Will there be training for students? Student training is ongoing throughout the year throughout classroom instruction. Will students have to purchase a netbook or chromebook case to carry the netbook or chromebook? All netbooks or chromebooks must be carried in a carrying case at all times. The district will supply each student with a suitable carrying case. Will students be able to use their netbooks or chromebooks on school buses? No, use of a netbook or chromebook while on a bus constitutes a safety hazard. If a student’s netbook or chromebook charger and/or bag are lost or stolen, will this be covered under the 1 to 1 Usage Fee? In the event that netbook or chromebook accessories are stolen, or lost, students should report the lost items to the Technical Help Desk or High School office as soon as possible. Students will be charged for the cost of the replacement if the accessory cannot be found. The 1 to 1 Usage Fee does not cover accessories such as battery, power charger or carrying case.

What will students do with their netbooks or chromebooks during fitness classes, while at VTC, and during after-school activities? Students are responsible for the care and security of their netbook or chromebook. Students will carry the netbook or chromebook in a carrying case to all classes on the FASD campus. The size of the netbook or chromebook also lends itself well to securing the netbook or chromebook in the student lockers on a short-term basis. Students are not encouraged to store/secure their netbook or chromebook in a vehicle for any length of time. Students can secure the netbooks or chromebooks in a locker at fitness class and while at VTC. They will need to address securing the netbooks or chromebooks for after-school activities with the coach or person in charge of the activity. What about insurance against theft or breakage through carelessness? The netbook or chromebook is very portable and very valuable, making it an attractive target for thieves. Therefore, the Franklin Area School District highly recommends the 1 to 1 Usage Fee for all students. The 1 to 1 Usage Fee partially covers theft, accidental damage, and surge damage. Students will be responsible for paying the additional charge for EACH theft, loss, or damage claim. Will students be given a new battery if one would go bad? The netbook or chromebook battery will be replaced by the manufacturer for defects under the warranty agreement. Any other replacement of battery will be charged to the student. Students are responsible for charging their battery and proper battery maintenance. Will students be able to install software on the netbook or chromebook? Yes, students will be allowed to install software on the school-owned computer. This is an exception to Policy 815 for the 1 to 1 program. All software installed has to be acceptable under the FASD Computer Policy #815 and revisions. Students who violate the policy will be disciplined. Security monitoring software is used on all of the computers to assure that only software that is aligned with the FASD Computer Policy #815 is installed on the computers. FASD Tech support will not troubleshoot software that was not installed by FASD Tech Support. Will students be able to e-mail, chat, and play games on their netbooks or chromebooks? Students will have access to e-mail in order to submit assignments while connected to the district network. IM chat and playing of non-educational games will be permitted outside of school while the student is at home. Can a student use their iPod or digital camera with the netbook or chromebook? Can students load music and photos on the computer? Yes, students may connect their iPod music player or digital camera to their netbook or chromebook. Students will also be allotted a certain amount of drive space on their netbook or chromebook to load music and digital pictures they have obtained legally. Students will not be able to “back-up” their music and photos to district servers or web space. FASD Tech support will not troubleshoot hardware that was not installed by FASD Tech Support.

Can students use their own accessories with the netbook or chromebook? The netbook or chromebook comes with 3 USB ports. Students are permitted to use their own accessories (USB mouse, keyboard, digital camera, iPod, headphones, etc.) with the netbook or chromebook. FASD Tech support will not troubleshoot hardware that was not installed by FASD Tech Support. Can a student use their netbook or chromebook computer over the summer? No. All netbooks or chromebooks will be collected at the end of the school year for general maintenance, cleaning, and software installation purposes. The One-to-One initiative allows for all operating system and software upgrades in order to stay current with the latest software offerings. Every attempt will be made so that students receive the same netbook or chromebook each year. Will the FASD provide maintenance on the student netbooks or chromebooks? Yes. The Technical Services Help Desk staff will coordinate maintenance for students. Students enrolled at FASD will be covered by the 1 to 1 Usage Fee for items described in the netbook or chromebook warranty agreement. FASD will only provide support for hardware and software installed by FASD Tech Support. What will students do without a computer in their classes if their netbook or chromebook is being repaired or replaced? Franklin Area High School will stock a limited number of netbooks or chromebooks that can be loaned out to students. This will minimize “down-time” for students. It will be the student’s responsibility to return the “loaned” netbook or chromebook to the Technology Department before the end of each day. This will involve a sign in/sign out signature by the student. Do students need a printer at home? Students do not need to own a printer since printers are located in and near classrooms and in the library. For those students who want to connect to a USB printer at home with the school netbook or chromebook may do so if the proper printer driver is installed on the netbook or chromebook. FASD Tech Support will not provide tech support for this function. Will there be facilities to back up the files students create on their netbooks? Students are responsible for backing up their own files on their school issued netbook or chromebook . Tech Support will not be retrieving deleted or corrupt files from them. If your computer gets a virus or needs to be reinstalled, you will be receiving the netbook or chromebook back with the original configuration installed. It cannot be stressed enough that it is the responsibility of the student to have a backup of all files.

What will the school do to help prevent students from going to inappropriate sites? The FASD has a software/hardware product that is designed to help monitor all Internet sites that users might attempt to access. This software/hardware blocks inappropriate sites and also logs a history of every site that each user opens. Students who attempt to find inappropriate sites will be disciplined. The current FASD content filter meets federal CIPA (Child Internet Protection Act) guidelines. This filtering system will be used for both in school and home access.

What about computer viruses? The district will install the district virus protection software on each netbook or chromebook. Will students be able to use the netbooks or chromebook for Internet access at home? What if a student does not have Internet access at home? The netbooks or chromebooks will be equipped with wired and wireless network capability. If parents have a home network, students may connect via Ethernet or Wireless. Parents will be responsible for monitoring student Internet access at home. Internet access at home will not be mandatory. Software is installed on all netbooks or chromebooks to download Internet web pages and links at school to view offline when the netbooks or chromebooks are used off campus. FASD Tech Support will not be responsible or troubleshoot connection problems outside the school district buildings. Will FASD come to my home and connect the netbook or chromebook to the Internet for me? You are responsible for connecting the netbook or chromebook to your home computer. FASD will not troubleshoot or come to your house for home connection problems. Connection to your home network is rather easy as long as you do not have a major security setup on your home network. We will give a little demo to the students on how to connect at home but any issues beyond that will have to be taken care of by you or a local technician.
