Search for Superintendent of Oakland Unified School District Enters Final Stretch Oakland The Oakland Unified School District Board of Education is now learning more about the final candidates to take over the top leadership post in OUSD. On April 22 and 23, 2017, the Board spent more than 20 hours with candidates for Superintendent in concert with two diverse panels, one with student representatives and one made up of community members. “We had a very productive weekend that was the result, in large measure, of incredible input from our student and community panels. We thank all these leaders for their participation and https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/CAEDUOUSD/bulletins/19744fe

help creating the framework that will guide us as we move forward,” said Board of Education President James Harris. “The information we’ve gathered so far necessitates we take our time to reflect and discuss in greater depth the candidates who best represent the values of our District and are most prepared to lead OUSD into the future.” The Board is seeking a Superintendent who will give the District strong leadership as it navigates through these tough financial times. The community and student panels also emphasized to the Board Directors the need for the next Superintendent to have a deep understanding of Oakland, its people and the issues they face. “In our conversations with the community, it has been abundantly clear that a longterm personal investment in the children of Oakland is key in anyone who takes over as Superintendent. We are committed to finding the right person to lead OUSD into the future,” said President Harris. "This is not a decision we can afford to rush." The Board of Education expects to have the next Superintendent in place before July 1, 2017 and has expressed absolute confidence in Interim Superintendent Dr. Devin Dillon's ability to end the 2016/17 school year strong. The magnitude of this decision on a new Superintendent requires that the Board take additional time to ensure that our next leader is wellpositioned to embark on the difficult work that lies ahead. ### Oakland Unified School District In California’s most diverse city, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is dedicated to creating a learning environment where “Every Student Thrives!” Nearly half of our 50,000 students speak a nonEnglish language at home.
