Seniors enjoy special night at formal prom By Maham Shah Seniors jump-started their end-of-the-year activities by attending the WHS Senior Prom April 22 in the WHS commons. Students first showed off their glamorous dresses and handsome tuxedos during the Grand March in the school auditorium. Poses ranged from fake proposals to selfies. Once the couples crossed the stage, they were escorted to the front of the school by a limousine and entered the dance. Beginning at 9 p.m., food and beverages were served along with a variety of music until midnight. This year’s theme was

“Passport to Paris,” featuring a 17-foot cardboard Eiffel Tower available for a photo opportunity. All decorations were set up by the Senior Events Committee. Teacher and co-chair of the committee, Jamie VanSloten, said that prom was a night for all to remember. “It was a gratifying experience to provide an exciting night for all the seniors,” VanSloten exclaimed. “It turned out to be a memorable night for all who attended.” “Prom was an exciting end to an awesome last year as a Warrior,” senior Sydney Stallinga explained. “It was a night full of memories.”

Two staff members announce retirement WHS loses 70 years of experience at end of current school year

By Amy Walker Two WHS staff members recently announced their retirement from WHS and were honored at the annual HonorFest, organized by the WHS Renaissance Committee, on May 19. Retiring staff members will leave WHS with a mark of commitment, compassion and experience, as their dedication to the students and other staff members at WHS touched countless students. Teachers who have publicly announced retirement at the end of this school year include:

Shelly Kolbeck

Special education teacher Shelly Kolbeck has been with the Sioux Falls School District for 33 years and has been a member of the WHS Special Education Department for over 20 of those years. Kolbeck said her plan is to take it easy, following retirement. “I plan to do nothing for a while after retiring,” Kolbeck said. “I would like to do a little bit of traveling and relaxing first, then I

will figure out what to do next.” Kolbeck has played an integral role in the development of the Life Skills program at WHS and has made memories that she will take with her as she leaves WHS. One of her favorites was when the adaptive music students put on a program in the auditorium. Kolbeck said she will cherish the memories she has made here with the amazing staff and students she has been privileged to work beside; they are a part of her heart. Kolbeck said she is grateful for her years at WHS. “It has been a great ride,” she said. “There is a great student body and great staff here at WHS. It has been my second home.”

Marc Murren

Social studies teacher Marc Murren, a long-time wrestling and football coach, has been teaching for 37 years, 27 of those with the Sioux Falls School District at WHS. Murren has been busy with WHS activities for many years, but said he will find plenty to do once

his teaching career ends. “I am going to find a job,” Murren said. “I like to work. I plan on changing what I do, and doing something with a little less commitment.” While Murren teaches in the social studies department, his loud personality reverberates throughout the school on a daily basis. He will always be remembered for his singing contributions at the homecoming variety shows and HonorFests. His straightforward humor and obvious love for what he does shines brightly every day. Murren said he has many memories that he will take with him from WHS. “I don’t have one favorite memory,” Murren said. “I have thousands. The students here are amazing, and I have so many memories being able to interact with them daily.” Murren offered one last word of advice for the staff and students at WHS to remember. “Do things you should remember,” he said.
