DECA marketing students travel to major conference International event features over 19,000 participants By Emily VanBockern hirty-three WHS students attended the DECA International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, Calif., April 25-30. In total, there were over 19,000 people from around the world that attended this year’s event. At the conference, students competed in a variety of individual and team business role play events. WHS’s top performers included senior Surekchha Siwakoti who placed in the top 10 percent in the Principles of Hospitality and Tourism event and juniors Lexi Gjoraas and Erin Zahn who placed in the top 10 percent in the Hospitality Services team event. The most popular entertainment highlight for the students was the DECA party at Universal Studios in Hollywood. At this party, the entire park was shut down for the night just for DECA. Other entertainment highlights included a performance by the “Cool Kids” band Echosmith at the conference’s opening session as well as trips to Disneyland, California Adventure and The Outlets at Orange for a shopping and entertainment night. Senior Owen Alvine recommends joining DECA. “It was really exciting getting to know more about the business world,” Alvine said. “I want to encourage the underclassman to join while they still can.”

events,” Gebhart said. “We had quite a few state qualifiers.” In individual results, WHS took the top three places in the girls 400 meter dash as well as the girls high jump. Freshman Laura Petterson finished first in the girls 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01. “It was a very hard race with many good runners,” Petterson said. “The race didn’t get close until the last 10 meters when

I knew I won it and qualified for state.” Junior Bonheur Myuyekure also placed first in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:03 and senior Bre Richardson earned first in both girls long jump and triple jump. For the boys, junior Shiloh Flannigan placed first in both the long and triple jumps and senior Ethan McKinney took first in the 400 dash.

Senior inspired by ‘Star Wars’ universe When I was a kid, my biggest obsession was not dinosaurs or Legos, but rather the “Star Wars” universe. Even though the original trilogy of movies occurred long before I was born, the prequel films were released into theatres as I was growing up. There was something about George Lucas’ actionpacked, sci-fi movies that made an impact on me. Almost every Halloween of my childhood was spent dressed up as a Jedi Knight and the most common birthday presents I used to receive were toy Hear me. . . lightsabers and Star Wars related action figures. The special Carson Herbert connection I had with the movies was revived in December of 2015 when Disney released the first movie of a new Star Wars trilogy, “The Force Awakens.” The movie did not disappoint, and if the new release wasn’t enough to delight fans of the saga enough, Disney released “Rouge One” last December and plans to complete the next two movies of that trilogy, as well as several spinoff movies, in the future. Today, the entire Star Wars fanbase is celebrating “Star Wars Day” inspired by the pun “May the fourth be with you” from the familiar line “May the Force be with you” from the original films. The Star Wars universe has impacted many different people from generation to generation, and at the rate it is currently going, it’s not likely that it will stop anytime soon. Senior Carson Herbert hopes the Force will be with AP students through next week.

Tweet leads to Minecraft deal By Matt Day The Seattle Times (TNS) SEATTLE — Microsoft’s acquisition of “Minecraft” began with a tweet and a text. Markus “Notch” Persson, the man behind the smash hit world-building game, posted a tweet out of frustration with the fame of running a company with obsessive fans. “Anyone want to buy my share of Mojang so I can move on with my life?” he said, early in the morning of June 16, 2014, referring to the Stockholm-based company that built “Minecraft.”

Technology Watch Halfway across the world in Redmond, Peter Zetterberg saw the post. Sweden-born Zetterberg had spent years at Microsoft building an Xbox relationship with Mojang’s top brass. He fired off a text to then-Mojang CEO Carl Manneh. Was Persson serious? And if he was, would Mojang consider an offer from Microsoft? Persson was serious, Manneh said. And they would like to talk to Microsoft. “We needed to act fast,” Zetterberg said. “Microsoft time is not the same as at another company.” Zetterberg emailed Microsoft publishing executive Matt Booty at 2 a.m. By 7, his memo had made its way to Xbox chief Phil Spencer, and, soon after, to new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. Spencer and Manneh would speak on the phone that morning. Three months later, in September 2014, Microsoft announced a $2.5 billion deal to buy Mojang and “Minecraft,” outmaneuvering reported rival bidders Activision and Electronic Arts and scooping up a worldwide phenomenon well on its way to becoming the second-bestselling video game of all time.
