Information Update: Highlights from January 11 Board of Education Meeting
OUSD submitted its financial audit report for FY16 last December on time, for the first time in over a decade. An independent auditor provided a “qualified” opinion, consistent with prior years. Since 200203, the number of findings has been dramatically reduced from 120 to nine and the total questioned costs have dropped from over $35M to $10K. FY 201718 Budget Priorities & Recommendations: Each year, the OUSD budget prioritization process ensures OUSD is a good steward of public funds and engages stakeholders in strategic decisionmaking. This process helps OUSD leadership make tough budget decisions to increase efficiency in operations and outcomes for students. Superintendent Antwan Wilson highlighted the following: For the past three years, OUSD has balanced its budget and funded priority investments. This year, the district is facing a more difficult budget environment due to a lower increase in LCFF funding, decline in enrollment, and potential loss in revenue from the federal government. There is no large looming deficit, but there are still difficult choices to make, as every year the District has more things it wants and needs to do for our kids than it has money to pay for. Priority investments for FY1718 total $25.1M. Right now, OUSD is limiting spending in unrestricted general funds for the remainder of the school year as a cost saving measure. For next year, Superintendent Wilson is recommending reductions of central office operations and operational reorganization at select shared campus sites. No recommendation called for the closure of schools or programs within them. To learn more about the budget and to review budget reference tools visit: www.ousd.org/budget2017. Employment Agreement for Devin Dillon, Ph.D Interim Superintendent of Schools: The Board of Education approved Dr. Dillon’s employment agreement to serve as Interim Superintendent of Schools. Congratulations Dr. Dillon! Dr. Dillon officially assumes her role as Interim Superintendent on February 1, 2017.
