INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT ANNOUNCEMENT Oakland, CA – The Board of Education (BOE) announced this evening that Deputy Superintendent Devin Dillon, PhD has been offered the opportunity to serve as the Interim Superintendent of Schools for Oakland Unified School District. The announcement came during Board President James Harris’ report in the BOE’s regularly scheduled meeting held at City Hall. As the Interim Superintendent, Dillon will play a lead role in the educational leadership and business affairs for the school system while a local search for a permanent replacement is underway. “My fellow Directors and I believe that Dr. Dillon is eminently qualified to continue the strategic direction of the District,” said BOE President James Harris. “She has led the academic work that has put the District on its current trajectory, and we are excited to offer the Interim position to someone who knows firsthand how to get things done in Oakland.” A native Californian and Oakland resident, Dillon will assume the duties of Superintendent Antwan Wilson, who begins as Chancellor of Schools in Washington, DC in February. Dillon currently serves as the Deputy Superintendent of Academic Social and Emotional Learning for OUSD and oversees the Departments of English Language Learning & Multilingual Achievement, Teaching & Learning, Early Childhood Education, Programs for Exceptional

Students (special education), Community Schools, Personalized Professionalized Learning and Educator Effectiveness. Over her 20-year career in education, Dillon developed her expertise in serving students, families and staff as an instructional assistant, teacher, assistant principal, principal, director, and here in OUSD as Chief Academic Officer and Deputy Superintendent. Dillon was the first person in her family to attend college and has gone on to hold a PhD in Educational Administration, a Master’s Degree in Contemplative Education and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. “All of us at OUSD have worked diligently to ensure our schools are on the rise. With graduation rates up and suspension rates down, I am committed to our current strategic direction,” said Dillon. “As an educator, I believe the promise of public education is a civil rights issue here in Oakland. Together, we will continue serving the whole child to ensure that every student thrives.” Dillon’s proposed contract will go before the BOE on January 11. Dillon will have the option to apply for the long-term position. The Board will explore contracting with a search firm to provide candidate search services for the permanent position. Filling the superintendent vacancy is expected to take about six months.
