Press Release: OUSD Board of Education Announces Timeline for Selecting New Superintendent
BOE Directors say they will search locally to find both the interim and the permanent superintendent with an eye toward candidates who are prepared to continue the current work and strategic direction of the District. In addition to possessing experience in improving enrollment and equity and expertise in special education, candidates are expected to be dedicated to the community schools model and understand Oakland and the Bay Area. The interim superintendent, who will serve from midJanuary through June 2017, will also have the option to apply for the longterm position. The Board will enlist the services of a search firm to identify candidates and conduct the hiring process for the permanent position. “We are looking forward to onboarding someone who is familiar with the progress of OUSD and who can drive the community schools model forward,” said BOE President James Harris. “My colleagues and I have laid out a wellconsidered timeline, a critical engagement process to understand the community's priorities for a candidate, and have outline steps to ensure a hiring process that identifies the most highly qualified candidates.” The BOE is focusing on hiring someone who will stay in Oakland for the foreseeable future. “We are all committed to keeping OUSD on an upward trajectory and building with students, the community and OUSD staff,” said BOE President Harris. “With this search, the Board is committed to doing right by the families of Oakland." # # # About Oakland Unified School District In California’s most diverse city, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) is dedicated to creating a learning environment where “Every Student Thrives!” Nearly half of its 50,000 students speak a nonEnglish language at home.
